Dry Run Gorge Loop TRView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 1 of 1 messages posted.
“http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/578815517ucIqwj?vhost=outdoors&start=0 This 9-10 mile loop is one of my most favorite hikes, I just don't get tired of it. Begin at the Hillsgrove Ranger Station and follow Old House Trail, Stony Run Trail, back to Old House Trail, Loyalsock Trail, go to High Knob Overlook, and follow High Knob Trail back to the Ranger station. I recommend following Stony Run Trail in the beginning instead of staying on Old House as the Stony Run Trail is more scenic, and demanding. You can also choose from 3 route options at the east end of the loop- stay on the LT, follow Dutters Run Trail down to Dry Run Road and Dry Run Falls, and then follow Old Bark Trail back to the LT, or bushwhack down Dutters Run from the LT (several great waterfalls) to Dry Run Road and back to the LT via Old Bark Trail. This loop has it all- jungles of mountain laurel, great views, waterfalls, great campsites, beautiful forests, and even a small backcountry pond about 4 acres in size. I really love the High Knob Trail from High Knob Overlook down to the Hillsgrove Ranger Station. The forest is just really beautiful as it tunnels through laurel, with many different kinds of trees, plus the added bonus of the pond. Surprisingly, most trail junctures have signs, and there is even a treadway usually, even through the laurel; though sections of Stony Run Trail has very thick laurel. This loop would also be good for a quick one night backpack. Good times to go are In late May, when the mountain laurel blooms, or in the Fall, for the foliage.” 1:34:52 PM 10/19/10
