“Yes. It is the week-end of the 13th. Long week-end. Friday through Monday. Meiss Meadows is off 88 at Carson Pass. Sno Park Parking lot requires permit. If you are traveling west to SF it is on the right hand side. Couple years ago night time temps dropped to 17 below. Daytime only reached six degrees. It was cold but after a certain temp it all feels the same. Our heinekin kegs froze and we tried warming them on the stoves.”

“OK, when the word comes out to where we can request time off, I can put in for that weekend. Four days, what will be the activities? Snow shoeing around? That's where we got stuck all day when we had two feet of snow overnight at Winnemucca. Was Maria (Estela) on that trip where the guy built the igloo? I may just do Friday-Sunday.

“Duane - Last year Steve mentioned having me 'host' the winterfest and bringing up the teepee with 'stove'. I haven't talked to him in a few months so I don't know if this is still an option or not. You may want to contact him. Although I never really paid to close attention to the stove setup as I always just did what he said to do. I think if people are still interested in a Winterfest obviously you could skip the teepee.”

“A bunch were at Winterfest last Jan. At one time or another, I believe they said 22 people maybe stayed at least one night and Naz and his lovely bride and baby visited for a few hours.

“Merry Christmas to you too, Duane. Basically finished the project my boss has been brow beating me for around 10:00 PM last night. Still needs a lot of polishing, but I was able to give him a report with good numbers. No more 0100 and 0200 bed times. Looks like I get to have a Christmas this year after all.

“Duane - It looks like we may end up cancelling the trip to Meiss due to the conditions. Based on the weather pattern there will not be any snow up there by the 13th.

We are now discussing going on just a regular backpack trip to Hetch Hetchy or even Lassen. It will also only be the 14th - 16th. I am sorry for the late notice but everyone has been out of town for the holidays.

If you are still interested let me know and I will update you on the final destination plan.

On a side note - I was backpacking this week-end at Point Reyes with Maria when I came back to camp and found your buddy Andy standing there. He and Greg were also staying at Coast Camp. Small world!”

“Yo! Sandyann! :) I'm starting to think I've run out of buddies to bp with. I figure I'll be back to solo bping in the future, life gets in the way. I have my old stoves, so I'll have to enjoy their company.
I would be in for Lassen, Yose is too far, although I do have that Friday off. My neck and what little brain I have has been bugging me since Sunday. (not all the full bottle of wines fault.) Two ocular migraines today. Not a good start to 2012, plus at work, they gave me another CPU, I've had issues all morning with missing shortcuts and software, missing reconfigurations and I don't know what not.

“Don't give up hope Duane! We are still planning the Meiss trip but if no snow at all we don't want to be at that elevation if we can't tow in the right gear to stay warm. I'll let you know if it is Meiss or Lassen and hope you can still join.

That is too bad about the headaches. I am working from home today as I have caught some flu bug and am hoping by staying home one day I will get better.

Have you talked to Maria? I know she is planning a car camping trip to Lassen area around Jan 26th.”

“Duane - I am sorry to say that the Carson pass/Meiss Meadow trip has been changed to Hetch Hetchy. I know you said it is too far but you are absolutely encouraged to join if you can make it. With the conditions up there we decided to go lower where the temps wouldn't be so extreme since we won't be able to tow in the heavier winter gear.”

“I think we will end up at Rancheria Falls, which is where you went with Maria that time, at about 7 miles out. It just depends. We are still working out details as I type. Did you know there is a backpacker camp at the dam? You can only stay one night on either end of a trip. There are bear boxes at each site as well. It is right at the TH parking lot.

I will try to have this pinned down before Sunday so you will be able to make a decision.”

“Camping was nice at the chalet area in Lassen VNP over the weekend. Really nice Saturday, down to a shirt and vest, no wind or breeze, nice campfire in the bar b q that night, sitting around drinking beer etc. Even saw a few friends from where I live, so got to catch up on life. Only got down to 26-27F. At the Sulphur Works, the one bubbling hole was really going for it, never saw it that active before.

To get back into shape for a big trip I have coming up, I'm going to be hiking Boney Mountain in the Sycamore Canyon area every Sunday afternoon for the next couple months. If anyone's interested, let me know. It's a terrific 9 mile loop with amazing views of the coast.”

“Looks like Sandyann's trip to the Carson Pass was the only real snow trip I had this year, I did get snowed on a few weeks ago when I bped a few miles from home so I could use a couple of my old stoves. Snowed today about 3" after the rain. Off to the Lava Beds for Easter?

“Back from a couple nights at the Lava Beds Nat'l Monument, waaaaayyy up north here in CA. 7 of us made the trip, including a visior from Chicago, John from England, great time caving and some great views of icicles hanging down from the roof in the next to last cave, some bats. Cool down in there, fair day Saturday.
