2011 Updated Permit System for Cables on Half Dome
http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/hdpermits.htm

Due to safety problems from crowds, they have temporarily instituted a 100% permit system for the Half Dome cables. So if you are planning to day hike Half Dome, or try to grab it while doing the JMT, you need to check out the website.

IMHO, I think this was bound to happen. When it is crowded on the cables it can be unsafe. Lucky they don't close Half Dome down altogether.

i'll have to look around, but i saw a story 2 weeks after they implemented permits, all were booked, and later found upwards to $300 on ebay

about 400 people used this trail on weekdays, while about 800 people used this trail on weekends and holidays

Wow, like going to the mall.

I wonder if the permits will be verified like the camping permits where you have to show ID, that will eliminate scalpers. Will love to see the scalpers get stuck with permits, buyer beware on people buying permits though. Check out a thread on Highsierratopix about this.

Yes. If you are caught on the trail to half dome past the cutoff they will ask for a permit. There is always a ranger in that area.

I have been asked multiple times about my plan to hike Half Dome again this season when I take my daughter to Yosemite. The rules have NOT changed with regards to back-coutry permits.

Note: Backpackers with an appropriate wilderness permit can receive a Half Dome permit when they pick up their wilderness permit with no additional reservation required.

Yes, if the permit is for Little Yosemite Valley, as that one includes HD. I am not sure about any others.
