I have several friends and relatives that did exactly that on the last election. They all regret it. I even know Democrats that regret voting for Obama.

“In general Cain's response to the question of his sales tax raising the prices of things has been that corporate taxes and payroll tax also raise the price things. Moving some of the taxes over to sales tax won't increase the prices over what they are now.

I haven't heard him say this, but the biggest argument I see for the U.S. to choose a sales tax would be that it equally affects the prices of everything sold in the U.S. - other taxes affect things made in the U.S. much more than they affect things imported into the U.S.

I think his answer on Social Security and Medicare is that the sales tax would fund them.

I can't claim to have done the math, but I would make the sales tax a little higher and exempt the first (say) 100,000 of income - and say that people making under 80K don't even have to bother filing a tax return.”
