let's switch to this thread
for Masten 2k11 planning since it is connected to the trip page.

This year due to rain and flood damage in Masten, we had to choose a different spot. Jmitch suggested Asaph campground near Ansonia,PA. This spot appears to be ideal for this trip.

It has hiking right next to the campground, including a wild area and not faraway is the PA Grand Canyon and famous West Rim Trail, as well as the Pine Creek.

Asaph CG is right off of Rt. 6 in Ansonia.

I'm planning to make it up, for at least a night.

Who else is going? I heard Bobo was thinking about it.

I hope to check out some local trails. I'd like to check out Mt. Tom, Snyder Point, and some trails in the Asaph area.

Everyone:

While at Asaph, stop in and support the local outfitters store in downtown Wellsboro.

it sounds like Bobo is going to be there. There will also be several homebrews.

I heard there is a pretty mountain to climb right near the campground. Is that Mt. Tom?

I don't know if I will make it tomorrow, if at all, I have a nasty cold and sore throat. I am going to play it by ear.

Mt Tom is just on the other side of Route 6, most start from the Darling Run rail-trail picnic area. But you could walk up to an old fire tower site right from the campground.

Had to move myself to a no go unfortunately. Sounds like you'll avoid the snowpocalypse in downstate PA. :)

I started feeling better on Friday, so I headed up. Got there about 830ish and the party was going strong. It started snowing early Friday, in the wee hours of the morning, but it never really stuck.. it was sort of a rain snow mixture. Higher elevations did have snow, but not much. You could see the snow line on the mountains, very pretty. We didn't do much hiking... mostly car hiking to each side of the canyon, Colton Point and Leonard Harrison. It was pretty foggy.

We had a pretty good party last night, lots of delicious food and lots of beer and spirits to go round.

It got pretty cold last night. I started feeling pretty yucky again and rolled out around 830 this morning.
