Roan Mountain weekend trip advice
Hi, Just wondering if any Roan Mountain locals has advice for a three day trip from Carver's Gap to 19. Looking for a good camp with water 3-4 miles in first night since we're coming in late. Seven or so the next day, then out the third.

Thanks!

Stan Murray shelter is bit over 3 miles from Carvers. The water source could be dry late in the season.

If you are coming in late,I would recommend staying at Roan High Shelter in the cabin or camping around it if full. Then a full day to Overmountain shelter to stay at the old tobacco barn. Final day out of stop at Doll Flats for an easy out on the next day. Stan Murray is not very nice shelter to stay at.

I agree with backtracking the shortish distance to Roan High Knob as a better plan. The hike from RHK to Overmountain (great water at Overmountain) is fairly easy. Overmountain to 19E is not that hard a day either and a wonderful hike. Both RHK and OM have excellent tenting areas if you are so inclined.

If you go to the RHK shelter keep and eye on your stuff. MoMos can easily get to the shelter from the parking lot and packs have "walked" while the owner is getting water.

Wish I was there right now instead of Toledo. I may go up there this winter between Christmas and New Years Day. I used to go on that trip annually but we had enough snow at home last year to do me for a while. Can't wait on the winters up here in Northwest Ohio, lol.

That would be a nice winter stretch to hike. Bonus getting some wicked winds on the balds.

Thanks all.

I should have mentioned that we're taking a tent since a little more solitude is what we're after this trip.

Headed out in the a.m.!

Been to this area five times. At least four.

I wish I'd seen this thread earlier. I could have provided a wealth of useless information. I know that area well.

Happy Trails!!
