What's the Best Gas for Cold Weather?
OK, I need some gas for some cold weather trips. So, I bopped into REI. Hey, wait a minute. This gas is 75% butane and that one is 65% isobutane and this one over here is three gasses. What the heck?? How is anybody supposed to know which one is gonna work for cold weather? And what the dickens are these blends all about anyway?

All important questions if you're headed out in cold weather. I try to answer them all in two posts on my blog:

Why blended gas? Why not just use propane?

It's called white gas IMO

lol. Yes, white gasoline works well in cold weather, but if you're ever confined to your tent by bad weather, it sure is nice to have a gas stove. Priming a white gasoline stove inside a tent? No thanks.

The "first fuel" of the backpacker. :) It's what I started with, that and a #10 coffee can on a wire. :)

I just fire it up just outside the vestibule. I don't cook in the tent...period.

Wood stoves are a little hard to simmer with, but yeah they do the job -- and don't care if it's cold. The soot is kind of a pain in the butt though.

I use anodized aluminum so the soot doesn't show up on the black surface.
Not sayin, just sayin

We always used to keep our pot inside a paper bag inside a cloth bag. It kept the soot off of other things pretty well.

Hey, wait a minute. I thought this was a gas stove thread? ;)

I think there's something to be said for roughing it a bit more than most of us do. Don't get me wrong, I usually take my pocket rocket but not always. It's a cool feeling depending on yourself and not just a bunch of high dollar gear. I've even contemplated a survival type hike where I just take a knife, and a canteen but I can't find anyone stupid enough to go with me. I'd take my dog but one of would probably end up eating the other...

Man bites dog?

I will take along a little gear, thanks. Besides, a nice cup of hot cocoa in the evening is really nice. :)
