I've done it in March when it was really cold. If it's dry and there's not too much snow on the ground it should be great. There are knee-deep river crossings.

We did a TT hike a few years back around New Years. It was extremely brutally cold at night that weekend but i really enjoyed the leaf-off views. There was old snow on the ground which made it really scenic. I remember in the mornings the inside of my bivy tent had an ice crust on all the walls because it was so cold. The people were all great. I accidentally burnt Txwoodswoman's boot. It got somewhat nice during the day and Chili went swimming.......kindof

I bet if you search the archives you could find RHE trip in there.

there were several camping spots! we only saw a handfull of backpackers which worked out great and the water level was the lowest i'd ever seen it which made crossings easy!

I've never backpacked the Buffalo River Trail in January but I've done it in December. January is statistically one of the drier months in Arkansas and often has a number of relatively mild, sunny days perfect for backpacking. Of course, it can be cold and wet, too.

There aren't any river crossings on the BRT. The trail that follows the river corridor and crosses it numerous times is the Old River Trail.
