Golite Backpack $99 today only

I really like Dyneema and have found it to be the most durable to lightweight material out there for pack use. My cheapie Kelty Illusion that I picked up for $70 new is partially made of this stuff and while other stuff on the pack has been shredded, the dyneema portions look like new.

Anyway, just giving fellow gear heads a heads up.

The white pack on the left is full dyneema, the blue one is grid. Spectra grid is the same as dyneema grid. Different corporate lingo. There are different weights of grid too..”

“The design on the mchale packs is interesting in that there are no load lifter straps. I find these to be essential for anything other than a daypack.”

“He uses what he calls a "bypass harness" . It takes the point at where you would have a load lifter and attaches it back to the hipbelt. The shoulder pads allow that strap to pass thru it. It gives you a fit that brings the load close to your back but not on your shoulder. Similar feel to an external frame but custom and pricey.”

“Hey, I'm not trying to sell you one.. The Mchale mantra focuses on the hipbelt being crucial. I think he's right about that. For that reason I like this Go-lite pack over an ultra-light of similar capacity. Most UL packs are lacking in the hipbelt. I also like the downturn design of the bottom pocket. It's just a nice design, imo. Well worth $100.”

“I need to replace my winter pack sometime Rosey, that's why the need for the larger size. I can also just use some safety pins to hold the one side together where the zipper no longer works due to a torn out tooth. Also looking at Osprey Aether 85 and the Kifaru KU5200 I believe it is, over $500 though.

“Duane - I have the Ariel which I use for all trips. Plenty big enough for both week-end trips and week-long. Of course for snow trips I also bring the Mtn Smith sled with Kifaru hipbelt system.

I can't imaging you need such a large pack though since you go so light!”

“I was just up at Tahoe hiking up Mt Tallac. There is absolutely no snow to be seen for miles. We'll see. There's still a month to go. So long as we don't get dumped on while we're up there I'll be happy!”

“sandyann, how did you do Tallac? I want to do a trip in that area this Spring instead of going into Dick's Lake again. Is there a TH at that new parking area between Bay View and the Visitor Center? May only hike along the northerly side of Fallen Leaf.

“About a mile from the visitor center is a marked turn off for Camp Shelly and Mt Tallac TH. The trail is pretty mild for a few miles and then gets steep. Last time I did it in May (?) and pretty much the entire trail was covered in snow. Used snow shoes and could have used crampons farther up. Had to bail that time since it started snowing. Requires a wilderness permit though.”

“I'm wondering if newer maps show any trails out of that parking lot. All I have is older maps. It's been years since I xced up the drainage below Azure and Kalmia from Bayview, which is where I would like to go when there is still plenty of snow.

“Nice price and low weight. Several years ago GoLite's clothing kind sucked. I thought the clothing had poor construction and low quality materials. Great packs though! I love my GoLite Jam.

Does anything own this jacket? I am definately interested, but kind of leary.”

Whenever these companies have sales like this, I can't help but think of the markup that it generally involved on these products. I'm assuming they're not losing money selling this jacket for $39, and I wonder what the jacket is really worth.

I can't think of "made in America" products that are discounted this much. They have sales but the discounts are usually about 30%.”

The price is really good for a soft shell, but I am wonder how much "jacket" you can really get for 9 oz. I am looking for a mid-weight layer so this might fit the bill anyway.”

“Mchale packs are made to order so they don't have a lot of of adjustment, usually...that one looks like it might have quite a bit, at least the hipbelt. Looks like the old critical mass style, 7.5 lbs. empty..wow! Is that a pink bottom?”

“My Golite Coal jacket, before it got a few cinder burns from that occasional campfire was very well made. I would compare it to the best. I've had it 7 years or so now.

“I can't spend good vintage stove money on new gear. About caught up with buying old stoves that I think I gotta have, so should be able to acquire some lighter gear, like a quilt and new winter pack.

Patagonia, that's the brand I could not come up with yesterday. Golite quality on my Coal jacket was what I see on my overly priced, but discounted vest I got from Patagonia a few years back.
