Hikes near L.A.

I've got to be in L.A. (Northridge), and am looking for some good day hikes while I'm there. I definitely want to drive out along the coast - but nothing more than a day trip. I'm happy hiking up to 10 miles with a few thousand feet of gain. Any recommendations?

I didn't know there was a Northridge in Lower Alabama

Boney mountain is my favorite local hike... It's around 10 miles round trip with about 2,000 feet of gain... From the top you get a great 360 degree view, including up the coast. There's two routes up - a wide and well maintained (and trafficked) trail - and an ill maintained and always deserted back route that cuts a mile off the hike but at the cost of a considerably steeper trail.

It's out of Newberry Park, about 30 mins from northridge

Haines Canyon in Tujunga is a good one. It goes to the highest point in the City of Los Angeles, Mt. Lukens, which is just over 5,000' in elevation.

Here is a photo from my hike last weekend. That is downtown LA in the distance. Click to enlarge.

My daughter and me at Henninger Flats this past Saturday.

Please do not tell Stratdood or Stovie about this post. It will ruin my reputation for being (ahem) "creepy."

Wow, interesting.

Although I will say that when my daughter was very young, we would only face her towards us (until her neck got strong enough to support her).

Hopefully, the stimulus level on my hikes isn't too much for her. She doesn't seem to be too emotionally scarred from our walks together, so hopefully we're OK here.

Oh course I was going for the smart ass comment 'cause you were wearing that thing..

My wife and I always carried them on our shoulders, probably against the law now..

She looks like she's diggin' it, good you're getting her out there. They're a whole lot less trouble when they can't decide where you're going, enjoy it!

She's a lot of fun at this age (two), and she's still light enough that I can carry her (~24 lbs). When I carry her though, I'm carrying more weight than on a backpack.

I don't hear of many hiking deaths in Southern CA. A guy had a redwood tree fall on him up north a ways recently. There are some rough people and hobos in the woods but I don't hear of them bothering anybody. Getting caught in a wildfire or falling off a cliff are more likely.

There are lots of big mountains just outside of L.A. - a handful of 10,000'ers. Several wilderness areas too. Plenty of opportunities if you want to hike - most people don't.

LA is a great place if you're a hiker. Nobody thinks about LA that way, but the peaks in the area go up to 11,500' and there are WAY less crowds than in the internationally popular Sierra Nevada range to the north.

This is the view from my campsite a couple of months ago (this past Sept). This is about two hours drive (and some hiking) from downtown Los Angeles.
