Kindle books “My wife gave me a kindle for Christmas so now I am looking for some good hiking or mountaineering books to load on to it. So far I am thinking of getting "Barefoot Sisters: Southbound" and "Skywalker: Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail". Need more suggestions.” 4:39:35 PM 12/25/11 “AWOL on the AT by David Miller. Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides, that's about the Bataan death march, so sorta hiking related The girl who loved Tom Gordon by Steven King, I enjoyed.” 7:10:00 PM 12/25/11 “High Crimes, Pickets & Dead Men, The Last Season, Goodbye to a River” 10:24:11 PM 12/25/11 “"A Walk in the Woods" is a classic, but most of us have read it. Another one I like is "The Climb up to Hell" by Jack Olsen. It is about climbing, but is a good read.” 11:38:14 PM 12/25/11 “Just Passin Through” 5:26:28 AM 12/26/11 “The ultimate "road trip book" Electric Acid Kool Aid Test.” 7:50:10 AM 12/26/11 “"The Complete Walker" - Colin fletcher” 8:43:34 AM 12/26/11 “I have read Awol and Walk in the woods, gonna get Bryson's other book, the one were he walks thru australia. It convinced me that the Appalchian Trail was not for me.” 8:18:40 AM 12/27/11 “Ah heck Gremlin, really? I got one'a his autographed Skywalker books at TrailDays too, but I'm saving it for my spring itch. Tho the last few years it's not been there, so after a good number of years, I'm thinking it may wear off. A Walk Across America is pretty good. I live near Robbinsville, the only town in his huge journey and book that throws him out of town, hehe. Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey is a dawg-on must, that's one of my favorites.” 9:03:29 AM 12/27/11 “Touching the Void, mountaineering book about survival” 9:54:16 AM 12/27/11 “Davis,Wade (a Canuck who spent his career at Harvard); Into the Silence is what I read recently. I recommend it highly. Doug” 1:05:27 PM 12/29/11 “An old newspaper is probably less expensive and just as good for starting a campfire as book pages. It is a real pain waiting for someone to finish reading a page so that I can use it for starting the fire, expecially if I am waiting to cook over the fire. last edited: 12/29/11 2:13:12 PM” 2:10:25 PM 12/29/11 “No paper here, its a kindle.” 6:12:33 PM 12/29/11 “my son gave me a Kindle also. Anyone know if there are any good free books about backpacking/hiking/kayaking out there?” 12:48:11 PM 12/30/11 “Have not seen any free ones but have seen some less that $5.” 6:21:39 PM 12/30/11 Good Hiking Books “Hey Ewker, Woodcraft by G.W. Sears is available for free on the Kindle.” 8:21:27 PM 12/30/11 “Anything by Craig Childs is pretty incredible once you get past his over romantic writing style - the secret knowledge of water is a particularly good read” 9:34:09 PM 12/30/11 “thanks, I will check out those books” 2:11:53 PM 12/31/11 “does the current Kindle handle pdf files? if so th Ashley Book of Knots is available for free and is a good reference book for camping knots anyways also if an ALDHA member the Companion is available in pdf last edited: 1/01/12 8:27:48 AM” 8:26:40 AM 1/01/12 “If G. W. Sears is available, do they have, Kephart, Horace: Camping and Woodcraft; New York, 1917? IMO, still the finest single compendium on the subject. Surprisingly modern in both attitude and content and it presages many later developments.” 12:07:58 PM 1/03/12 “HOI - you should see the blowdowns at Sipsey thanks to the April tornadoes. Gremlin - the Great Smoky Mtns Association has reprinted that book. I've enjoyed it. http://www.smokiesstore.org/browse.cfm/4,1111.html” 12:24:38 PM 1/03/12 “Gremlin, they dont have the book dayhiker links to but they have Our Southern Highlanders by Kephart on Kindle for free last edited: 1/03/12 1:20:13 PM” 1:17:53 PM 1/03/12 “He's one of the people one wishes one had met.
