I am interested in planning a trip on the Standing stone Trail in PA this March. I am thinking about the section that includes the new Butler Knob Shelter and great views like Hall of the Mountain King and the Throne Room Vista. Anyone interested?

What dates are you looking at... Also what kind of miles? It would be great to see you all again...

You gonna make to Shenandoah March 16-18?

HOI
Yes... Central Section. A lot of great hikes from there... Would love to do some hiking just south of there in the Rapidan Wildlife Management Area

I don't think I will make the SNP trip. I haven't considered dates yet.

I am not sure which section yet. Mileage would probably be 20-30 spread over the weekend.

I am consulting with Jmitch for trip ideas.

There is a new shelter on Butler Knob and some amazing views in that area, probably some of the best in all of PA of any PA trail, but there are some, atleast there were some long road sections, which I rather not deal with. I think they may have rerouted much of the road walks, so if that is the case, I'd like to do the central section.

There was also a trip plan discussed a few years ago that involved the Standing Stone Trail and the Tuscarora Trail to Big Mountain. That is another possibility.

ENS,
I might be if the dates were right. Spring breaks comming early this year.
See ya later,

One possibility is to go from PA 655 to Butler Knob. I think the trail still follows the gated PGC road down to Three Springs.

Is 665 the road out of Orbasonia?

If I remember the, the road walk starts after Hoopers Gap and is around 5 miles. I was hoping the trail was re-routed. Maybe another section would be better. I'd rather not do any large sections on the road.

Another thought is the Chuck Keiper Trail.

ENS,

I guess I wasn't clear. The section I mention above will avoid the roadwalk down to Three Springs.

It will be kind of a long shuttle. The road up to Butler Knob is a little rugged, but passable. At least it was the last time I was there, which has been a while.

CKT also sounds fine.

Standing Stone Trail Club newsletter

This club is doing amazing work and is really making the SST a wonderful footpath. Offers some of the best views in PA. Trail also features big rock outcrops, sinkholes, wildflowers. New shelter near Butler Knob. If you live near the trail, consider supporting the trail club.

I will have to look at the maps. I am not sure where 655 is.

Read the news letter, they have been hard at work. I think we should stick with the SST. I should sign up for some TM here soon.

ENS,

I suspect the new shelter is just a little south of the section I proposed we do.

The shelter is not too far off the north end of the management road roadwalk at Butler Knob, it could be a drift in Friday night deal (with the secret waypoint programmed in), then head north to the northernmost 655 crossing north of the Steps with a legal Sat night campsite on top of Jacks in vicinity of Shorbs Summit, and short Sunday out of three miles or so. Or push it further to northerly Frew Rd crossing with several new reroutes north of northernmost 655 crossing through Rocky Ridge Nat Area.
