RE: Cell phones (again...)
I hardly ever use my cell phone and I certainly would never consider taking it on the trail. So how come I actually AM in Florida in August?

Okay, if I believe the "What Next?" thread, I won't need a cell phone because I'll have a clone of Jesus with me in the backcountry.

Sorry to see Randy and Griffey go? C'mon Nigal! Partied for a week straight when we unloaded Randy. Bastard didn't bother playing all season before the trade! Cheered when Kenney boy left (didn't make me very poplular in the office). Just waiting for Safeco to collapse on them. Damn new stadium for the Seachickens can fall down too, for all I care. Whiney-assed bastards!

I sit outside for lunch time, now that the sunny season is REALLY here. Across the creek is the bike path. One guy jogs past and EVERY TIME he's got that cell phone jammed to his ear.

?? I don't get it.

Understanding other people is not as important as understanding yourself. Take a sandwich to work and enjoy it as you walk along the trail. Let him wonder.

RE: Cell phones (again...)
It could be a choice between being in the office on the phone to someone and being out running and on the phone to someone. Which would you choose? Again, it?s all about convenience. Kind of like telecommuting. If given the choice between working 60 hours at the office and 30/30 office and home, what ya gonna pick? I?ll take microwaving my brain on the trail to being office-bound any day. It is just your own perception that the runner is trying to look cool for you that makes him a dique.

Here are a few of my visited sites.

Backpacker Magazine's Forums A somewhat moderated community with a history of lousy servers but a good contributory community.

Trail Talk Today - thebackpacker.com An immature debate riddled unmoderated site - you can tell!

Gear Addict A basically unmoderated site which is rarely visited anymore

GORP/Hiking - Community Discussions Hosted by Karen Berger. Not bad.

The Lightweight Backpacker A great board for you lightweight enthusiasts.

Outdoor Reviews - Outdoor Talk My current favorite. A somewhat moderated discussion board with an internationally flavored community. Great for gear heads like me. They will be adding another discussion forum specifically for non gear topics as well.

Views from the Top An excellent group of moderated discussion forums.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. HikerBoy had his own reasons for leaving. Personally, I enjoy the joking around. I don't give a flying fandango if it's moderated or not.

I agree Ski. I get so damn tired of hearing other?s opinions, and hearing my own for that matter. I don?t get into the gear stuff much so I just kind of meander a lot. I?m just plain ol? burned out on the whole net thing.

Well, having a cell phone helped to rescue some woman trying to summit Table Moutain in Idaho. And guess who came to her rescue? Harrison Ford. Seems he volunteers for a rescue team up there. Poor gal puked in Mr. Ford's helecopter. LOL

Hike Boy is right.

This site is a disgusting disgrace, full of vile-mouthed nincompoops who love the outdoors.

I guess that's why I hang out here.

I'm one of the last people in the world who doesn't have a cell phone. But I've now decided to get one and need your input.

Which plan is the best and why? I'd like:

--Free long distance

--Free "roaming" if possible

--Unused minutes rollover to the next month instead of expiring.

--Per second billing instead of per minute.

Dream on.

There is one nice advantage to having ONLY a cell phone and no lan line... No telemarketers. And if they do call just say 'this is my cell phone' and you will never hear from them again.

call your local cell phone companies and tell them what you want, not what they want to sell you. see who has the closest to what you are asking for.

The cell companies are pretty competetive right now. If you shop around and get em "bidding" against each other you can score big. A big benefit of my plan is that I get "free" long distance after 9pm and wknds. With family out of state it's nice. I talk to them more now.Your phone outta be free or like $20 bucks, if not keep shopping.

Our company uses SunCom and the coverage has been exceptional. Plans vary according to usage. Shop around for a plan that fits your needs, but do not overlook coverage and reliablility. I had a Nextel plan and dropped it because I was rarely in a cell if I was not on the interstate.

Timely question!

The current Consumer Reports issue is on cell phones and related topics.

Coverage can be spotty even in areas listed as covered. Backcountry is even more iffy. Most trails are in canyon bottoms where there is poor coverage. Ridges can have better coverage but the nearest tower can be dozens of miles away.

If you run into purists who don't like phones -- tell them to go to hell. You don't need their approval for anything you carry.

I caved in and signed up with Sprint. They had the best deal overall, and I don't expect to use the phone in the backcountry.

If anyone is a subscriber to Consumer Reports online can you do a cut and paste of the article (or at least the highlights) for the rest of us who aren't $igned up?

I'd have to disagree and agree
on the cell phone thing. I have one that my company gives me. it allows my employees to get ahold of me when Im on the road. It also allows me to keep in touch with family. but not on the trail! that's god's time, and no one is more important. As for driving, I prefer to pull over if I can. its safer, plus I like to take driving breaks, I drive quite a bit in my job. Watches, time...that must be one of those newfangled inventions, someone please explain to me the meaning of time. As the Talking Heads once said "time is an asterice, same as it ever was, same as it ever was".

I haven't worn a watch since I was a kid. I refuse to.

The only reason I would carry a cell phone on the trail is if I was soloing and then only use it for an emergency. They'll be practical for this purpose when they switch to satelittes instead of those dammed cell towers. The tower-building industry seems like a racket. Already there's a couple of satellite "cell phone" companies out there but the prices are outrageous. Doesn't make sense to me and I suspect collusion or something by the tower builders.
