I don't know anyone who keeps their cellphone on while hiking. The batteries aren't that good. I carry one so I can call out if needed. Otherwise it sits in the bottom of my pack.

All the arguments used against cellphones can also be applied to GPS units, compasses, FSR radios, etc.

I carry my cellphone while hiking/BPking, I only turn it on at the top of each hour for about 5 minutes. People who really needs to contact me knows to call at that time.

now that i have a 3.4 ounce phone, i turn it off and carry it. it beats getting it stolen out of the jeep. plus, alot of my trips now entail my wife dropping me off at one place and picking me up, somewhere else. for her, me having the phone sure beats me or her waiting for an hour or so at a pickup point.

I'm curious to know if the people who hike without a Phone and condemn those that do also hike bare-foot, wear animal skins and sleep in caves. I bet they dont. It's just another piece of mobile technology, like Vibram Soles, Geodesic Tents, Thermarest Mattresses, Petzl Headtorches, etc.

I hate mobile phones with a passion.

That being said I finally bought one and carry it everywhere. When backpacking it gets turned off and rides in my pack. Like Rad said it beats the heck out of my $200 phone getting stolen out of my car. I rarely check for service on the trail and I prefer that it never gets used until I get on the road to go home.

Under pressure to do something about car accidents involving cell phones, the industry-backed Cell Phone Safety Council today launched a public service campaign urging users to "scream like hell" before impact, thereby alerting callers on the other end that there is some kind of trouble.

"It's ironic, but people who can talk forever on a cell phone suddenly come up mute when they're about to get into a collision," said CPSC spokesman Donald Lufrette. "They just get hit, and the caller on the other end doesn't know what happened."

Therefore, the safety council suggests users scream "Aahhh!" or "Oh God!" or, if there are no children present, "#&%!$!" just before impact. A proper scream, Lufrette insisted, can save your life, as the person on the other end of the call can then phone authorities.

As an added advantage, a good caterwaul also cuts down on the wasted airtime that inevitably follows a crash as the phone, still connected, sits amid shards of broken glass on the hood of the car. A wise caller, realizing your predicament, will know to hang up right away.

"Your hospital bills are going to be bad enough," Lufrette remarked. "The last thing you want is a big fat cell phone bill on top of it.".

One of the favorite assassination tricks of the Mossad (Israeli version of the CIA) is to sneak a few ounces of plastic explosives into a the target's cellphone, then later call his number. When he puts the phone to his ear and answers the Mossad says "Your time is up" and detonate it remotely.

That's what I'd call a Hotline.

Why waste time booby trapping a phone...Mossad knows who to kill...just go shoot those muthers.

Peoria police asked for help Wednesday in finding a motorist who intentionally rammed another vehicle and pushed it into oncoming traffic because the driver was using his cellphone.

The incident occurred about 2:05 p.m. Tuesday while the victim was driving west in the 9400 block of West Northern Avenue, said Mike Tellef, a police spokesman.

The driver was talking on his cellphone when a man in another vehicle began yelling at him to hang up, Tellef said. The two men argued and cursed at one another as they continued driving, Tellef said.

"The suspect reacted by intentionally steering his vehicle across the traffic lanes striking the victim's white Chevrolet pickup truck and forcing him across the raised median and into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing two eastbound vehicles," Tellef said.

The suspect then got on southbound Loop 101 and fled, said.

The suspect was driving a white, late-model GM pickup truck that likely has damage on the left side, Tellef said. The pickup had Vietnam Veteran stickers and a baseball bat resting on the dashboard, he said.

I caught that, too. Sounds like he's normally a very nice person who likes to get involved in pickup baseball games.

Uh-huh.

I like cell & sat phones. Started with a 3-watt bag phone when I herniated a disc. I couldn't carry a heavy winter backpack for a while (mine was 80#) so I often "day-hiked" over-nite.

Often, My eyes take me much further then I originally planned. A phone has been great in that I could call home & say I'm going to be an extra day or two. Don't need a tent or bag. Sometimes, I would hike thru instead of turning around & arrange a ride back to my car. Hate walking the road. The little handy-dandy phones are closer to useless becauss of their micro-watt outputs. Sometimes, I can get out from the peaks. Sometimes text seems to get thru. If I can get thru, my trips are usually much longer. I don't have to listen to it ring because I don't turn it on. In most cases a little cell phone will deplete it's battery quickly trying to establish contact in more remote area's.

My workplace gave me my new PDA today. It is the gayest looking thing I've ever seen. All white. Worse they gave me a clear plastic clip for it. I'm surprised it doesn't have a Hello Kitty sticker on the back.

Royal blue scrubs with white writing, white tee shirt and white shoes. So I guess at least I am properly accessorized. Gay as hell but properly accessorized.

Tarabull and I each got the new LG Chocolate Touch for Christmas. The touch screen is taking some getting used to but overall I really like it. The sound quality of the MP3 player is awesome and I can't wait to test the video playback. Best feature so far is the touch screen drum kit that allows me to ROCK with the music, lol.
