The Summer Olympics
Hi TTers,

Just curious...How do you all feel about the
upcoming competition in the landawondah
landdownundah?

Any events that you will follow closely?

Anybody you know who will be competing?

Any former HS/college athletes out there in TT land following their event?

Three events that interest me are the
decathalon - you need to be at least very
good in all events and strive to excell in
one or more
heptathalon - same thing
50M freestyle in swimming - Timing, power
and efficiency of stroke is everything

Thanks for listening, TTers.

RE: The Summer Olympics
I like track and field in general
Cycling (track cycling in particular)
Fencing
Equestrian events

I can personally do without some of the more widely televised events (swiming, diving, gymnastics, basketball). Not that the athletes in these events aren't amazing in their own right, but They just don't interest me so much.

Another thing. I wish the TV coverage would tone down the tragic histories of the various athletes so we can see more varied events.

Last thing. Is it true that in-line skating is now an event?

RE: The Summer Olympics
I will be in Sydney for the Olympics, covering them for a local TV station here in Salt Lake City. It could be fun but I'll be working 16 hours a day for 21 days straight.

Since SLC has the winter olympics in 2002, we'll be doing stories on transportation, security, facilities, and everything else about the games other than the games. So I won't be seeing any events. Good luck to me.

...So if the pass around camera gets to Griz during the month of September, just skip me and send it on to Hobbit. I won't be on any trails.

RE: The Summer Olympics
Hey, did you hear the story of the guy in Sydney who fell of a fishing boat. They found his head in the stomach of a 100 pound cod. Some kind of revenge. I read it in the newspaper last week. All you Olympics people: Beware the cod!

RE: The Summer Olympics
I knew I was avoiding fishing boats for some reason. Jonah made out a little better.

I was a diver in high school and like to follow swimming and diving. I am not up to date on the current talent however.

Basically like to follow all the Olympic events.

RE: The Summer Olympics
I am not a real sports watcher but I do enjoy tuning into the Olympics here and there. I heard on the radio the other day about how the Sidney games are the largest and most expensive games ever. Apparently some British olympic committee member suggested at the last games that all team competitions should be eliminated since they have suitable world cometitions and, more importantly, it is a departure from the original games - individual against individual. I am of like opinion.

RE: The Summer Olympics
So many incredible highlights so far in these Olympics...

Men and women swimmers
many from the USA are not
only winning but many
world records have been
set.

Two swimmers from the USA TIED for the 50meter freestyle in
world record
time, I believe,!

A USA female diver came out
of nowhere, to dive incredibly well just
months after three fractures in her foot
to win the gold medal.

This is the essence of
the olympics...years and years of training
and sacrifice for those
few moments in competition and then
to be on the medal stand wearing a gold
medal and the StarSpangled banner
playing.

I find the performances of even the "also-rans"
to be world-class.

There is incredible power, incredible talent, incredible poetry in motion in
a gold medalist.

It matters not to me
that I do not see the
events "live". It is
incredible to view then
even on tape-delay.

RE: The Summer Olympics
I hate the olympics! No, I love the olympics.

I'm getting almost no homework done. I can't help but sit and watch the olympics. It doesn't matter what event they are showing, I drop everything and watch. Maybe I'll start getting some work done in 2 weeks or so when the games are done. UGH.

RE: The Summer Olympics
Olympics-watching recipe!

Spicy Asian Beef and Grapes

2 tablespoons each: reduced-sodium soy sauce and dry white wine

1 clove garlic, minced

1 teaspoon sesame oil

½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

12 ounces beef flank steak

1 tablespoon cornstarch

½ cup sliced onion

1 cup seedless grapes, halved

½ cup julienne strips of red bell pepper

1 green onion, thinly sliced

2 cups finely shredded cabbage

1 teaspoon sesame seeds, toasted

Combine soy sauce, wine, garlic, sesame oil and pepper flakes in small bowl; mix well. Slice steak across the grain into thin strips and add to mixture in bowl; stir to coat all pieces. Cover and marinate 20 minutes.

Place marinated beef in a 2-quart casserole; stir in cornstarch. Add onion and cover with wax paper. Stirring midway through cooking, microwave on high 4 minutes. Add grapes, bell pepper and green onion; re-cover. Microwave on high 2 to 3 minutes. Line bottom of serving platter with cabbage; top with hot beef mixture. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Eat this gold medal winning taste-fest while enjoying the yumblilicious Olympics!

What's all this crap about sports? I thought this thread was supposed to be about the Olympics! Instead, people are talking some kind of nonsense about a bunch of braindead jocks in Upsidedownland...or that's what it sounds like anyway.

So, getting back to the real thread topic: what's a good 5-day trip in the Olympics? What's the best time to go (least precipitation)?

RE: The Summer Olympics
Probably the best time to do the Olympics is during the summer.

However, the winter Olympics are less popular, and thus less crowded.

Will you be searching for precious metals? I understand that bronze, silver, and even gold can be found "in them thar hills".

10 Things That Should Be Olympic Events
Categories: Special Events
Olympic fever has descended upon the planet. And while of course I love to watch swimming (but now their futuristic aero/waterodynamic shark suits cover up their hot swimmer bodies, what's with that?), running and many other Olympic events, here's a few they don't have that I'd like it if they did.

1. Making shapes with your body. People would turn their bodies into amazing shapes, like hand puppets meets the song 'YMCA,' but so many times better.

2. Carving animals out of food, but timed. Whoever can make a cat out of a watermelon fastest and best wins. (But you don't know what the challenge will be--"cat," say--until the event takes place.)

3. Something with mermaids. It would be like rhythmic gymnastics meets aquatic-themed casino meets little girls' wallpaper. More on this later, after I brainstorm.

4. Swimming across a large and scary body of water. It would take at least 24 hours.

5. Burrowing. Whoever could burrow into the ground completely in the least amount of time wins. Scary, too, because you wouldn't be able to breathe well, assuming you went in headfirst.

6. People compete in every single summer Olympic event, and whoever has the best cumulative score at the end wins. Some variation on the ultimate triathlon.

7. Fittest person. This would be more of a pageant competition.

8. Surfing. Is there surfing in the Olympics?

9. I think the thing about mermaids (no. 3) would be synchronized swimming, but underwater and in elaborate costumes. A pool with glass sides that you can watch through.

10. Riding dolphins. Like equestrian, but in the water.

shark feeding - like the crazy fools on the Discovery channel.

you get points from judges based on how bloody your food you offer is and how many sharks you can attract to you without getting bitten. If you get bitten you lose points - but if you lose a hand or arm you gain points, if you continue the competition sans appendage you get bonus points.

SANS NewsBites Vol. 10 Num. 62

--Groups Offer Tools for Olympic Games Travelers to Circumvent Chinese Internet Censoring
(August 5 & 7, 2008)

The Chaos Computer Club is making available USB sticks with technology
that will allow visitors to China for the Olympics to circumvent
Chinese Internet censorship measures. The sticks contain copies of the
TorBrowser and Torprojects software and will be available only for the
duration of the Olympic Games. Chaos has also set up a website where
people can download the software. Another group, FoeBuD, is selling
similar devices. TOR is a network of servers around the world that
allows anonymization of data sent over the Internet. The Global
Internet Freedom Consortium is also offering a package of tools to help
Beijing Olympic visitors evade Chinese censorship.

Oh man, what a bunch of racist the IOC obviously are....I guess it's not a good idea to run around the world for 9 months apologizing for what a crappy place America is....who'd wanna hold a pie eating contest here, let alone the Olympics.

It's not necessarily a bad thing. The Olympics are like economic crack. The host city gets a big economic boost and then after the games it is left with a huge infrastructure it has to upkeep.

Rio will loose billions if awarded the bid. Chicago was projecting a modest gain, however the crooked politicans here would have skimmed most of the profit off.

Stovie...I thought the ONE was not doing anything?

Most of Chicagoians did not want the games anyway.

Well, habit is easy.

It's one of those things a nun wears.

Assuming usually means someone is an ass.

Establish is a prefix for "ment".

Most is the word that everyone wants to use when dividing money.

Top 10 Reasons Chicago Didn't Get the Olympics

10. Dead people can't vote at IOC meetings

9. Obama distracted by 25 min meeting with Gen. McChrystal

8. Who cares if Obama couldn't talk the IOC into Chicago? He'll be able to talk Iran out of nukes.

7. The impediment is Israel still building settlements.

6. Obviously no president would have been able to acomplish it.

5. We've been quite clear and said all along that we didn't want the Olympics.

4. This isn't about the number of Olympics "lost", it's about the number of Olympics "saved" or "created".

3. Clearly not enough wise Latina judges on the committee

2. Because the IOC is racist.

1. It's George Bush's fault.
