The man who loves volcanoes
Here's an interesting story from The Mountaineers. What do you think of this? Is this guy nuts? Is he on a quest? Do you think you could do what he does for even a couple of nights?

I would never consider that fun. More like a prison sentance.

As a geologist, I think it would be rad to spend some time atop a living giant like a volcano.

However, as a hiker I'm not sure I would want to spend as much time on them as he has, unless I was doing research.

But hey...we all gotta do what inspires us, even if others don't see the thrill!

I shoulda known this thread would die a slow and ignominous death, after all, there was no mention of guns or nudity....

But did anyone take a look at this guy's personal site? It's worth it just to view the incredible photos. The narratives he wrote while on some of the summits are pretty fascinating as well.

WOW!! That guy is a friggin' nut! I mean...struck by lightning and he STILL goes up there. Not only that, but he LIVES up there. Crazy but awesome. I admire people who so clearly know how they wanna live.

You are right, Kleetycakes, the pics and narrative are incredible. I had to bookmark it, since it is impossible to get through it all in one sitting(simple due to lack of time).

Thanks. :o)

Oh yeah...I especially liked the nekkid picture of him on top of Mt. Baker...
umm holding an AK47 and uhh preaching the words of Nietsche. Oh yeah..and the dogs on the trail in the background, with no leash in sight!

Exciting stuff there, folks. Check it out.

This guy is fascinating. Reading about volcanoes brings to memory my visit to Mt. St. Helen's a couple years ago...standing on Johnston Ridge (a death site) and looking straight across into the bowl of the mtn. was awesome. Can't believe he's going to spend 2 mos. on Mt. Rainier..hiked near the base and the mtn. was simply overwhelming..can't imagine being on top! Kudos to him but also to each of us who spends time in his/her own way finding solitude and connecting with this great land of ours!!!!!

Heh- this is great to see this. I helped Glenn on 2 of his last expeditions. I don't even know what to say about him. Simply put, his pursuit of a dream and the story that's been woven, the highs, the lows, the disregard for odds and peoples 2 cent opinions... all constitute a spirit of aliveness that has literally changed my life.

RE: The man who loves volcanoes
Hi and welcome alpentalic.

I managed to run into someone on another board who had simply MET Glenn on one of his expeditions and he had a similar opinion to yours.

Can I also ask you this -- it seems like a weird question, but we were wondering if because of his illness (I can't think what is is now) he had prosthetics for his legs?

I hadn't even considered that, but then remembered him writing how his knees would come out of their sockets. I thought, strange, but knew people had shoulders, fingers, etc. pop out of their sockets and get put back in. Also, I realize it could be that same situation.

Either way, he truly is amazing.
