RE: John Ashcroft
Phuck you Mutt. I enjoy watching you upchuck an opinion and then scramble around looking for the question. I find it remarkable that there is nothing I could say against you that would defame you more than your own posts.

Keep it up.

RE: John Ashcroft
bacpac, you are a gem when it comes to argument.
You are right that Mutt seems to have an agenda, but you and the religious types absolutely have an agenda so deeply entrenched that you have difficulty even hearing what other people are saying.
That last post of yours sounds like it was written in lieu of a logical argument, if you ask me.

Could you describe my agenda? I am listening.

Ok, I concede my post to Mutt was a kick in the nuts, but he doesn't understand anything else. He is one of the few people on TT I would really like to meet face to face.

RE: John Ashcroft
Hey, I think it would be great to meet all of the people who post here.
Instead of describing your agenda to prove a point, I would enjoy participating in an in- depth discussion of real spiritual realization. It would be a bold conversation that doesn't necessarily devalue someone else's understanding if it doesn't fit with our own preconceived notions.
There is something to be gained from listening to what others have come to understand.
I also think that Wild Child has posted some of the most astute observations on this thread, but few will comment or seem to listen. Mi dos centavos.

RE: John Ashcroft
Dunadan, I think a discussion is a good idea with reasonable people. I am just curious why you assume I have an agenda and what you think that agenda is.

I object to people posting half truths and lies to prove a point. I guess that is my agenda.

I searched this thread twice and could not find a single post from Wild Child. Perhaps he is the most astute among us.

Back to Ashcroft
In today's NY Times, Ashcroft has loosed the strings on the FBI. You no longer have to have committed a crime for the FBI to show up on your doorstep, now if they have an "inkling" that you might have done something wrong, they can show up on your doorstep. Can we say "Big Brother?" "Fascism?"

"New Justice Department guidelines to be unveiled today will give FBI agents latitude to monitor Internet sites, libraries and religious institutions without first having to offer evidence of potential criminal activity, officials said yesterday..."

The first church they need to 'monitor' is the one Ashcroft attends. Then they need to check out the cocktail parties in Georgetown and the book signings at 'Poetry and Prose'. Don't forget the Democratic and Republican National Conventions... and what is that on Sam Donaldson's head?

You're next, Gordon. They need to check your boots for C-4.

You can't have it both ways. People b!tch about events like 9/11 and then b!tch when the government gets proactive about doing something.

So tell me waht's the big deal about..

"The new guidelines state simply that FBI agents may enter public places and forums, including publicly accessible Internet sites, to observe, develop leads and investigate. The guidelines do not specifically mention religious institutions, but a senior Justice Department official said last night that the impact of the changes will be dramatic in allowing the FBI to open a window on extremist activity in mosques."

My problem with it is that they didn't need the new guidelines to catch the people responsible for 9/11. The FBI (and INS) just needed to do their job in the first place. Ashcroft had made pornography, drugs, and crime the priority of FBI activities when he came in. The FBI had already found Moussaui and people in the FBI ignored all sorts of information so they could avoid getting a search warrant for his computer... this is just like the gun law crap... let's make new laws and ignore all the existing ones

Some might say that if you don't have anything to hide, there ain't nuthin' to worry about. Yeah, lie back and enjoy the ride. Don't rock the boat.

Some might say that Ashcroft's church is a little on the extreme side as well. 'Spose the FBI will be opening a window on extremist activity in his church?

(CBS) Fishing rod in hand, Attorney General John Ashcroft left on a weekend trip to Missouri Thursday afternoon aboard a chartered government jet, reports CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart.

In response to inquiries from CBS News over why Ashcroft was traveling exclusively by leased jet aircraft instead of commercial airlines, the Justice Department cited what it called a "threat assessment" by the FBI, and said Ashcroft has been advised to travel only by private jet for the remainder of his term.

"There was a threat assessment and there are guidelines. He is acting under the guidelines," an FBI spokesman said. Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department, however, would identify what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it.

A senior official at the CIA said he was unaware of specific threats against any Cabinet member, and Ashcroft himself, in a speech in California, seemed unsure of the nature of the threat.

"I don't do threat assessments myself and I rely on those whose responsibility it is in the law enforcement community, particularly the FBI. And I try to stay within the guidelines that they've suggested I should stay within for those purposes," Ashcroft said.

Asked if he knew anything about the threat or who might have made it, the attorney general replied, "Frankly, I don't. That's the answer."

Earlier this week, the Justice Department leased a NASA-owned G-3 Gulfstream for a 6-day trip to Western states. Such aircraft cost the government more than $1,600 an hour to fly. When asked whether Ashcroft was paying for any portion of the trips devoted to personal business, a Justice Department spokeswoman declined to respond.

All other Bush Cabinet appointees, with the exception of Interior and Energy with remote sites to oversee, fly commercial airliners. Janet Reno, Ashcroft's predecessor as attorney general, also routinely flew commercial. The secretaries of State and Defense traditionally travel with extra security on military planes.

The Justice Department insists that it wasn't Ashcroft who wanted to fly leased aircraft. That idea, they said, came strictly from Ashcroft's FBI security detail. The FBI had no further comment.

This desision to fly private jets came just days before the famous PDB of August 6, 2001. That "threat" was certainly the assessment that Al Qaeda was planning hijackings.

At 3 am on 9-11-2001 according to a local family who had a niece in the USMC based at the Pentagon, she received a call to report to duty and her unit was put on full military alert.

Fortunately nothing happened to her but it does raise the question of what the government really knew on 9-11.

Rumor And I repeat, rumor has it that the president being in Florida on the morning of 9-11 was sudden.
