John Ashcroft
I don't want very much government. I want government to pave the streets and enforce the laws.

Thank God we finally have someone who will at least get it half right.

Ashcroft is a tuned in righteous dude. My hope now is that he can get the "goods" on Hillary, Bill, Teddy, Leahy, B.Boxer, D,Fienstien, Dashle, etc. and send those Democratic Party "Brown Shirts" to prison where they belong. Also it would be good if he could overturn Roe v. Wade singlehandedly. Plus we need some more oil. It would be good if he could get the oil rigs rolling towards the fragile Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

There are extremes on both sides, but when it comes down to the principles for which each party stands on, the republicans actually respect liberty, rather than trample on it and humiliate it as the democrats at the national level do.

I agree that the republicans have just as many moral, ethical, etc.. failures as the dems do. the difference is that the dems actually(at the national level, i know many a dem who stands for many of the repubs views at the local level) trample liberty in principle. the stands they take on issues right down the line, actually start with a premise that contradicts the idea of liberty. all the ollie norths in the world can't change the issues.

RE: John Ashcroft
I love to see liberty and Ashcroft used in the same sentence. Cracks me up. Ashcrack is the antithesis of liberty and personal freedom. But then so is ultra-conservative christianity...the very embodiment of evil in the world. The greatest trick the Devil played on humanity was convincing them that christianity is the path to salvation!

Ashcrack isn't just for overturning Roe V Wade, he's for making women & doctors criminals for terminating a pregnancy that's life threatening to the mother, or the result of incest or rape. This stand is in no way representative of a vast majority of the population. And it doesn't represent a commitment to personal liberty, either.

Ashcrack, if not racist, has displayed some pretty questionable behavior to minorities. From blocking Ronnie White's nomination, to blocking desegregation in St. Louis, to praising that southern white supremist religious magazine that I can't remember the name of, to accepting an honorary degree from Bob Jones University, where the administration decided it was better to give up federal funding than give up their racist, segregationist ideology & policies.

Isn't it an interesting pick for attorney general, now that Bush has promised federal funds to sectarian social service programs. Do you think Ashcrack is going to vigorously enforce the law and make sure that these religious institutions aren't using either the the new federal monies or their own money that has been freed up from federal funds, for proselytizing? Not a chance. Again, this is not looking good for personal liberty, and not good for the establishment clause., Speaking of which, Ashcrack has NO problem with the idea of arbitrarily amending the constitution to reflect his extremist views.

Yeah, that conservative christians LOVE this choice for attorney general, makes me even more certain that christianity cannot possibly be the true path to God.

RE: John Ashcroft
I'm not sure who mentioned ashcroft and liberty in the same sentence. one thing i do know is that this country was, without question, based on PRINCIPLE. when politicians and citizens alike spout off with no regard for any principle, than there is not much you can do, neither party has a monopoly on good ideas, but it is very hard to take them seriously if those ideas completely contradict the premise of american life. the premise of american life is what has defeated slavery, pushed civil rights to fruition, and what will inevitably, if this country's life is to be long, defeat any other challenges to its foundation.

RE: John Ashcroft
Bush and his baby-killers are DECONSTRUCTIONISTS.
Their ideology moves them to undo anything and everything progressive that has been done in this country from DAY ONE.

I could see a move to restrict voting to white male land-owners.
Hey, they don't want stupid and lazy people voting!

On a more realistic note, I can see the possibility of a severe cut-back in federal funding for education, especially higher education.
Since Klinton came along $$$ for college has gone WAY up.
Right-wing ideology doesn't go along with that sort of "wasteful" spending.
The thinking is, "that if you can't afford to send your kids to college, tough sh!t".

RE: John Ashcroft
chunga, I agree that principle is a desirable force behind policy, and that it's at least better than special interest influence. That democrats somehow are intent on destroying the fabric of the nation is going to require some explanation, though.

Tom Terrific, I have to disagree with you on the education front. Dummy (dubya) knows that education has the ring of moderation and appeals to the oprah "it's for the children" crowd. What I think dummy will do is enact policy that will leave no choice but to push teachers to teach their students how to pass whatever "accountability" tests he devises. Also, I think he'll use this initiative to further drain money from public schools to fund religious schooling, perhaps in the the form of vouchers (ashcrack won't bat an eye at this btw). But take away money from higher education? I'm not so sure. He's fooled too many moderate soccer moms with his supposed commitment to education. After his extremist picks for various administration offices, he's going to need a moderate-looking initiative to fall back on.

come one, isn't there any conservatives with a capacity to argue the ashcrack issue better than solitary hiker or bacpac? These imbecils do a real disservice to your side........

RE: John Ashcroft
i knew i couldn't keep away from this thread. lol.

mutt- my message is not that dems are intent on.....my message is that there are those on both sides helping to do so, but the underlying principles of each party should have a starting point that doesn't contradict liberty. gun control advocates, anti-school choice advocates, those who believe tax cuts mean the government spending money, rather than citizens being returned money they themselves paid, etc. most if not all of the advocates on those issues are aligned with lots of money in the dem party. trial lawyers, labor unions(with no paycheck protection) the teachers unions. the repub also have monied interests. the problem lies in the fact that the presidency and senate are for the high profile, with few exceptions. the local level is where the real work is done.

Solitary Hiker, WTF? Go back and reread my last post, dummy. Did I say I wanted to hear from you? NO, I said I wanted to hear from anybody BUT you. That you responded anyway with yet another ad hominem attack tells me 1) you're not very bright, 2) you have NOTHING of substance to add to the debate, and 3) you're boring.

By the way, you shouldn't try to talk smack - it's embarrasing. "take your medication mutt." Dude, that's just lame.

So here's an idea for you: STFU unless you have something substantive to input.
That should keep you quiet for quite a while.

Oh, I forgot, you're a fire & brimstone christian. You're used to making the worst judgements about people. Great personality trait.

Mutt to quote you " why make a such a lmae snap judgement based on no evidence..." its the same thing you did on the slow sunday a.m. thread when you basically say "no brainwashing for the intelligent",which implies all church goers are unintelligent. To use your favorite line " another ad hominem attack..."

Mutt, you know you are a troll. You have made that abundantly clear in the past.
I truly like your attempt to draw me in to this debate. A small attempt at flattery , plus a bit of insult. I dont mind being associatted with sol. hiker or bacpac, at least they are willing to stand up and be counted for what they believe in(without hidin).

I am not going to argue with you point for point because it would be pointless, neither of us will be swayed, plus it would just play into your little game, I enjoy it from time to time but It is the same old thing. I grow weary of it. But Kudos to you for your effort!
