snowball fight!!
whooohooo, is it snowing or what?!?

What a great weatherman we have here(he's cute and all, but...)
quote: 1 to 4 inches expected
reality: 6+ and still falling

awesome snow too...fluffy and light, packs well...the great snowball fight kind. The trees are blanketed, evergreen branches drooping and it is like a winter wonderland out there. Goood times!

Anybody else gittin' any?

Started with rain, then around 11:30 switched over to snow. Flakes the size of a book of matches. Heavy, slushy stuff. Commute promises to be a nightmare. High temps forecasted for next few days, so the schtuff will disappear before I get a chance to play in it.
Thats Philly, center city.

fly,
that snow will kill those warm temperature outlooks. It would take a helluvalota warm gulf air to rais the temp to a point that will melt that much snow that fast.

Three feet of powdery stuff. Been coming down at 3" an hour since 1300. Off to the fire station - state of emergency in town due to winds and drifting. T-shirt art's getting mailed off to screeners in a day or two. Happy snowshoeing to all!

RE: snowball fight!!
I was hiking in Tahoe on Saturday (w/o snowshoes) and every once in a while a stray step would break through and sink all the way to my crotch. Mind, the snow was deeper than crotch level. So the only thing stopping me from falling deeper was...my crotch.

I'm back in the sunshine and warmth now. Huddled away 'til spring.

All we got is a lousey inch! It's all melting and it's getting sloppy. I guess it really doesn't matter because I'm not allowed outside yet anyways:^( Just haveta make the pupps wipe their feet a bit better when they come in. (Yep, they really wipe their feet when told to!) I wish we'd get another foot! Somehow it would make being cooped up inside more tolerable.

RE: snowball fight!!
We gopt 15 inches. Headed to Maine this weekend (Kezar Lake, Lovell, near Fryeburg . . . where Stephen King got hit). Just spoke to my sister who lives on Sebago, they also got +/- 16 inches.

SHould be good snow shoing/skiing this weekend.

AmyG -- made two of your sleds for an upcoming trip. 1/2 inch PVC etc. On the downhill, although the sled doesn't run up my heels, it did move to the side and come up beside me.

Working on getting the poles as tight as possible to the sled so there will be less play. Have the rope threaded through with a snap clip/caribener at the end to clip into my waist belt.

Hey!!??? what where you gonna use for a waist belt??? My friend's wife may sew us up something with D-rings for the clips. My backpack belt is not removeable (I was gonna use that), any other ideas?

I use a surplus pistol belt. Nice and wide to distribute the load. A pad can be had for them if needed.

RE: snowball fight!!
cool lee! I just used a fanny-pack as my waist belt...attached carabiners to it, like you.
You can buy extra hip-belts at gear stores, but I think they are pricey. Le Subtil has a good idea about the pistol belt.

let me know how it works out(pics?!)

RE: snowball fight!!
Snow sled belt: I bought a utility belt at a lumberyard. Its very sturdy and comfortable, and has both a velcro closure and a plastic snap buckle. I put D rings on the sides to tie into.

I was up snow camping by Warm Lake over the weekend, and we had only 24" of snow, where in past years we have had from 48" to 70". Major snow shortage here in Idaho, although there is more snow than usual on the ground in Boise. We have an inch or so left in shady places, but its been around for a month, which is unusual.

baume - are you a former quaker stater?!?

Hey Fly, you are right on - Bucks/Stover! You must have hiked this area? The nature preserve borders stover on the far side. Such a wonderful place to live and explore.
I almost forgot that you are a PA-boy! You know, rumor has it that there is an awesome catskills hike planned for president's day weekend...

Hi Jackie! I am in Eastern PA for now...I do love it here. Come June though, I don't know where the current will carry me...I'ma gonna go exploring a bit.

The weather has been fickle here too lately...the warm spell the past two days has really slushed up the snow. The pics I posted are from just after a good snowstorm...big fluffy white stuff.

Overcast skies now are hinting at some rain tomorrow...alas, no full moon imerges to guide my ski-clad fumblings tonight.

cheers!

Yeah AmyG, I grew up in Bradford County. Moved away in 95'(job). Wish I could break free and get to the Catskills but no luck. I've been there skiing a few times (Hunter Mountain) but never got any hiking in.

Indiana John is busy jumping up and down on one foot, head tilted, trying in vain to get the slush out of his ear. As he bends his knees to jump up again a rock sails over his head, clipping the pom-pom on his hat and hitting Dhutch square in the arse.

Sassafras rolls on the ground laughing and making snow angels as Dhutch curses Nigal.
