Any good
I was talking to someone today and we started talking about Backpacking. I said that we should do a trip sometime and they asked if I was "any good"

How can you be good at backpacking? I didn't know how to answer that question. Are you guys "any good"?

RE: Any good
The definition of success is accomplishing what you intended. It doesn?t matter how big or small the goal, if you achieve it you are a success = You are good.

RE: Any good
Sure I am. I won the Minnesota State BS Backpacking Championship.

Any good? I suppose that relates to personal compitence and self efficacy while in the wilderness.

RE: Any good
Did you ask them what they meant? and instantly scratch them off your possible hike buddy list?

RE: Any good
When I hike I don't hike for speed. Do you? If I wanted speed then I would do another activity.

They were scratched off of my buddy list, and I didn't even bother to ask him what he meant. If I talk to him again then I well ask him.

RE: Any good
I think as long as you don't overestimate your own capabilities or that of your gear you are a good backpacker. It is when you think you can do something that you really aren't prepared for that you cause trouble for yourself and your companions. But they don't sound like very promising hiking partners to me.

RE: Any good
I can say that If somebody ask me if the the people I have hiked with on TT are "any good", I'd say, "YOU DAMN RIGHT!!!!!"

I'm with walkindude.

I'm damn good. You doubt me? Thems fightin' words.

JK

But I would consider good as having the skillz.

RE: Any good
I figure, if you don't bitch or whine incessantly, you're a good backpacker or at least good company to keep.

RE: Any good
Maybe they weren't talking about backpacking...? wink wink, nudge nudge.

I think if you get lost all the time and need SARboy and Medic Girl you're probably not very good.

RE: Any good
Ouch.

Really though, Good only means anything in context, so you should, if you give a $hit, as them what they mean by Good.

It may even be fun. It often is when you force people to reflect upon their own inflated egos.

LOL @ Tommy!!!

"Any good" huh? Maybe he meant your outdoors skills... Then again, maybe he doesn't know much & wants to sound like he does? *shrug*

RE: Any good
I had a backpacker once. I thought she was TERRIFIC! (of course, it was my wife)

Actually I didn't realize backpacking was a competitive sport.

RE: Any good
Well, a good backpacker has to know stuff like how to distribute weight in a pack, how to use a stove, how to make trail food (which is harder then follow the package directions) and all that other stuff. They also need to know stuff about the outdoors. Stuff that us pros don't even think about as skills.
