peeh-a-boo
This is a small filler article in this week's USNR. Big Brother is here and 1984 is coming true.

Many visitors to Tampa last month may not have noticed the surveillance cameras at the Super Bowl or outside the bars, restaurants, and cinemas in the historic district. But the cameras noticed the visitors, scanning their face sand feeding the images to a computer. It electronically riffled through a database of mug shots, looking for a match. No arrests were made, but Tampa police say the facial recognition technology could be deployed "anywhere the public gathers".

Critics say the "faceprint" technology may constitute an illegal search. A further worry: Several states are building databases of digitized drivers' licenses photos, which would enable the system to track the public movements not only of criminals---but of nearly all adults

I know exactly how you feel TT, the black helicopters were circling my house last night. Fortunately they couldn't see inside because I had my aluminum foil shields drawn tight around the windows.

RE: peeh-a-boo
What's the problem with that? They weren't cataloging every person, just scanning for known terrorists and the like. The secret service does it all the time.

It's considered by some to be a "search" without reasonable cause, which I believe our constitution forbids.

RE: peeh-a-boo
It is not ?search? to look at something that is clear public view. It is no more a ?search? than a police officer looking at your uncovered face as you pass him on a public sidewalk. Now when the camera is in my house, we have a problem.

RE: peeh-a-boo
If something were to happen at the Superbowl, they would have face photos of everybody there and could/should have been able to catch the culprit...if needed.

Frankly, I don't like the camera issue...but I understand the Superbowl security issue!

RE: peeh-a-boo
I don't see the camera as a big problem but storage, cross referencing and tracking. Who controls, The gov. already knows more about me than I do, now they might be able to follow me around. Just think; a small camera in a tree at a lake, did you put that fire deadout, were you really lite on the land, was that cat hole just 6".

Trinity, the master of hyperbole.

Those things aren't against the law and the cost of placing hte cameras and comm links plus the personell cost of maintenance and monitering the equipment outweighs any gain they would have over that stuff. THis system is most feesable in situations where major events with llrge impacts would occur. So the cameras would only be really fesable for stopping terrorist attacks, or spotting wanted felons on government property.

Death my friend, you are behind in the ways of the times. Comanys have been doing this sort of thing for a while. And our gov. been doing it for a long time. Over twenty years ago I montored remote radar sites useing early forms of this, today I do the samething with selfcontained weather montoring stations and stream flow stations. It will make it easier to answer the question, " do you know where your children are?"

RE: peeh-a-boo
Sure, the technology might exist, but if the govt. were really all that up on things, and had all that manpower, why oh why are there COUNTLESS criminals out there running free? People with TONS of warrants wandering the streets? Deathmarch99 isn't behind the times; the govt. just hasn't been able to use effectively the technology in those little cameras.

Paranoia will destroy ya!

So, if you are behind an eight-foot fence in your own back yard, are you in "plain view" when a camera on a 100-foot sodium vapor lamp pole peers down, let alone an infrared eye in a "keyhole" satellite orbiting overhead? Isn't it human nature to expand usage of tools past their intended limits?

RE: peeh-a-boo
Unfortunatly we haven't had a Supreme Court that believe in Constitutional Literalism since the 1920's. The term is "unreasonable search and seizure".

I think that if you read the 'Federalist Papers' you will find that this easily meets the founding fathers definition of "unreasonable". The Papers don't specifically cover the Ammendments but these acts are not in the spirit of the word.

Since FDR's New Deal the court's motto seems to have been "Better safe that free".

Bummer!

RE: peeh-a-boo
How do I know what? That criminals are wandering around free? Well, that's obvious.
That the govt's idea of black ops is Elian Gonzoles? Again, in every newspaper in the world.
With all the DNA technology and advancements that have occurred they can't convict OJ?!?

That Paranoia Will Destroy Ya? Ok, that one I'm not real sure about; just got it off a song lyric.

I know, I know. The technology is there, but it takes massive funds and colossal manpower, and these things are reserved for the baddest and meanest, who *still* walk free. Chances are peons like us aren't being spied upon. But that's my Humble Opinion.

RE: peeh-a-boo
What kinda a thread title is that.

Faceprint is old hat, we have been doing that for ages just not on the scale as we would like. The Brits and Europeans do it more than we do, but that is because they have alot more "terroist" type of activity and lack the "man" power like we have here.

Just pay your taxes and go peacefully. Why fight the system you'll never win. We are everywhere so just relax and keep your nose clean and nothing should happen to you.

Mr. Rad, that was my line but I will let you use it this ONE time but try not to let it happen again. By the way, sources tell us that you need to make your catholes alittle deeper apparently you have alot of, well you know, coming from you.

Tommy, funny you should mention DNA if we had druthers we would have a National DNA bank on all of you peaceful people. That way it would be awhole lot easier to pin the tail on the donkey. Rights were meant to be broken is our motto.

One more thing, thanks for the free photos.
Makes our job just alittle easier.
