I've never used my OR Crocs in warm enough weather to sweat much but never got damp under them in cold weather. I really couldn't see spending much time in deep snow without them.

Oh, and they don't cost anything like $75 - more like $45.

Bought my first pair over the holidays
I figured I'd need them for snowshoeing. But, as it turned out, the snowshoes kept my boots and gaiters high and dry.

I have a tendency to rub my boots against the opposing lower leg. In doing so, my lower pants tend to get muddy/dirty. I figure gaiters will assist me in keeping my britches a little cleaner in the woods...

Why do i need gaiters?
Gaiters will help keep the shallow water out. I would rec. barefeet.

those wiggy's waders are pretty cool. i asked around at the local outfitters about how to cross deep water w/out taking off boots and i got looked at like i was stupid. it seemed like my only answer was sandals or fishing pants. the fishing pants are obviously not the answer and im too impatient to change my shoes all the time.

If you can afford a few extra bucks, I'd go with goretex and try to avoid gaiters that use zippers and strings (especially if you want to use them in snow). Get the ones, like OR that use velcro and straps.

If you do get the ones with a string, for under the boot, you can replace it with a bit of parachute cord (or bungy) and just leave it tied.

I'm still using the gaiters I made in HomeEc back in the 7th grade. Frostline Kit. That was like 20 some years ago.

Yeah, they made the boys take HomeEc also. First year they made us do it.

Yeah, nothing better than those gaiters made of rolled aluminum.

Never leak, never rust, never get them off.

p.s. That was the first AND last time I took HomeEc.

LMAO

I wore my molded plastic snake leggings
in the Conecuh NF. I anticipated lots of snake infested swampland for I did mostly bushwacking.

Gojo wears snakeskin leggings? Are you sure you meant to share that with us?

There are some gaiters that have a breathable pack cloth uppers so the calf doesn't steam and waterproof lowers so the boot top is protected.

I just found a pair of "saddle cloth" -- a brushed surface meant to be quiet -- camo gaiters at Gander Mtn. for half off (about $10). For that price, it's good to have an extra pair.

I have a pair of ORs like Pekka describes. The top of my synth boots tends to get a little damp. I know Cabellas has GTX gaiters for pretty cheap.

Molly Hatchet - Gaitor Country
I tend to only use my gaitors when I know there'll be lots of muddy muck to trudge through.

What about the ventigaitors? Super Troll wore them on the Fiery Gizzard hike and they looked pretty versatile and comfortable. They're pretty reasonably priced.
