Underwear
I just got my REI catalog in the mail today, (Yay!!!) and for some reason there underware section just kinda caught my eye. For the most part the clothes I wear are just my normal close, except I try to pick through them and find non-cotton and that sort of stuff. But I got to thinking, and wondered.... How many people actualy use the special backpackin' undies?

RE: Underwear
Always use them. Cotton takes forever to dry out from the perspiration. You don't want your boys to be all cold and clammy all day,do you.

RE: Underwear
I first bought a couple pair for long trips, thinking I could rinse them out and they would dry fast (which they did). I liked them so much I bought more and wear them daily. Try a pair of Patagonia silkweight Capilene and you'll see what I mean!

Another underwear thread. These are great. Time to derogation, 3 posts?

If it is great for backpacking why not use it every day? I do, Nylon mesh. Does not hold moisture, material wears forever.

Aaahh yes, the underwear thread. I sometimes wear the wick underwear. Most times, I do a complete underwear change anyway when I reach my campsite. Bras get steamy too.

RE: Underwear
You know, there should be a list of things we shouldn`t even think to share
and at the top of the list of things, should be the use or lack of underwear
but of that ever happening on here, I have my doubt
besides, it`s funny hearing who runs with or without

RE: Underwear
In a secluded campsite on a warm day I don?t wear no underwear or outerwear. And LH the best bra is no bra, at least for we that have tiny boobs. I do some times need to kind of pull the shirt away from my skin when I hear someone coming done the trail the other way. Even small breasts get to much attention from the boys when they are covered only by a thin sweat soaked shirt. I think it?s the nipples pocking out. I don?t know how you larger breasted women put up with the gawkers.

RE: Underwear
Le Subtil is right. After you try them, everyday wear only makes sense. For the winter months I tend to use the REI MTX, and Patagonia silkweight for warmer weather and travel, though I'm wearing silkweight today under a sweater and jeans. They tha bomb. I'll never go back to cotton for trail or travel. Unless we run out of petroleum to make my silkies.

RE: Underwear
Mtn Gal try to see it from a male perspective. On Isle Royale last year after a week out seeing NO one, and getting to the opposite end, I see 2 couples, 2 trailworkers, and a solo lady, all female, all braless or way unbuttoned, within an hour. Pack straps tend to add a dimension to the apperance. It's lucky I didn't break a leg I got so distracted.

(TIC, of COURSE!)

BTW the size don't matter it's the shape!

mtn gal, I need support. I don't like the way it feels to have my breasts bouncing around. It also gets very sweaty & uncomfortable to not have a bra on for me.

RE: Underwear
Good Grief!! Throw summa that cold water here!

What gives with the undies thing?? Have you all tried free-ballin? You'll never go back I do promise ya that. Just ask JerBear, LOL! Nearly year round I wear quick-dry shorts with the loose mesh liner, ya just cain't beat that for comfort and that fresh feelin you gals talk about in "them" commercials, hehe. If it gets too cold, like on the Savage Trip, just don some capilene bottoms underneath your hiking quick-dry shorts. Nair a problem!

I even have some pairs of reg undies from TNF and some pairs of boxer briefs from TNF. And guess what? They've been tried and it just doesn't come close to the improvement of free-ballin. Mebbe my girls can wear 'em hiking when they are teenagers, but other than that, they'll NEVER be used! I'm quite agitated that I've blown the bux to buy the thangs! Each to his own I reckon', or hers. Now as for braws, I cain't give much advice on them, but I would suggest that gals should just hike without 'em (wink, wink!)...

RE: Underwear
Maybe we need the boys to compete in bouncing contest.

Why are bare breasts a big deal in the U.S. but not in so many other places. I am not into public nudity but this primary because of the reactions of others. To many guys think topless women are looking for sex. In secluded places I take my shirt (or more) off for comfort not sex. Well not always just for comfort but that?s another private story.

RE: Underwear
What was that fly?

Summertime I'm in swim trucks with those mesh hangers or some nylon boxers. I just really can't go free in some shorts, especially if there is a zipper and/or bad seams and stitching but nothing gets the attention of others, bugs included, when you take a seat. It is about that time when the twins fall out and hit the deck.

See then there is the problem of them hanging down the legs of the shorts, you ever had them get in a bind and get smashed between your thigh and the cloth of the pants. Kinda annoying.

Wintertime it just the long johns, no cotton what so ever and maybe nylon boxers.

You see, Mary, the Crew Slut gets taken off the bus because she isn't doing all the things a groupie is supposed to be doing. So she needs to get from Florida to Canuga Park but has no dough. She enters the Wet T-shirt contest hoping to win bus fare back home.

RE: Underwear
I have to agree with the others that free ballin just isn't the way to do it. You are dealing with a couple issues... The first one like rad said, there is just to much there... And the second one is all of them laddies out hiking on the trail bra-less, you see those and the little willy trys to explore his way out of our pants. It's not a good thing.

RE: Underwear
I don?t get the cotton = bad thing, at least in dry warm weather. I know they absorb and hold moisture but don?t ya all change once in a while? Hey but I live and hike in a pretty dry climate. At 12 percent relative humidity and 70 to 80 degrees even cotton dries pretty quick. If its cold or wet the cotton stays off, but in warm dry weather cotton feels great.

If it ever reaches 12 percent humidity and 80 degrees in the Upper Great Lakes, we don't wear nylon or cotton. We wear asbestos 'cause the woods are going to be on fire.

naked ape, for some of us there's just too much uncomfortable swinging if we try to hike freeball!

The silkweight capilene is *great* for hiking and backpacking. But for daily wear I'm 100% cotton.

Ladies: I'm enjoying this conversation very much, please continue! I can provide a a large tub of green jello if you think that would help... ;-)

RE: Underwear
Yeah it does predate ya mtngal, really only funny to those it is in reference to (but it is quite funny in their instance). Mebbe i oughta delve a bit further, but quick-dry shorts with a mesh liner is bout as close as you can get without actually free-ballin. Altho there's a whole lotta freedom, you ain't truely by deffinition free-ballin. Same would be the case to those of you who would like us all to believe that ya must be mightily endowed ....... java and explorer. I do overstep some societal "pc" boundaries when I say that you 2 are probably no more or less of a white guy than I am eh?? KnowwhutImean?

And as far as "unwanted explorations" caused by visual excitements on the trail javaboy, you'd be correct in saying that my personal waistline fabrics don't provide much of an answer. However, in literally several thousands of miles backpacked, I've yet to find it too terrible a problem. Now does that say I'm more white than most guys here?? Iiiiiiiiii doooonnn't thaaank sooooo ......

I could be wrong tho LOL!!

The only time I wear anything under is when I'm doing a show that requires quick backstage costume changes. I figure it's just more polite to wear boxers in those instances.
