They went through a rough patch in the 80?s when they were cutting quality corners but they are great otherwise. How much do I love and believe in Jeep? I have two of them! The quality is like nothing I?ve ever owned before. And I don?t even have to go into how much I love that 4.0 HOP 6! Jeep Cherokee, it?s all I ever need! Value, quality, versatility?[standing on chair, facing north towards the Toledo Jeep plant with hand over heart]??GOD BLESS JEEP!? This is not saying what someone else may drive is NOT good, drive what ya want I don?t care. One thing I hate about SUVs is the way everyone demonizes 4X4s. Why must everyone jump on this bandwagon? Because it?s the responsible thing to do by the environmentalist left? Why don?t I ever hear people vilifying the mini vans (much less full sized vans)? A mini van is just as big as most SUVs on the road and many have 6-cylindars just like most SUVs and also suffer the same side impact problems as SUVs. But no one ever says don?t buy one, do they? Are 4X4?s vilified due to the fact they are considered expensive status symbols? This too is a fallacy. My Jeep costs less than at least 50% of the cars produced today. And status? Haha! There are about a billion Jeeps on the road. What makes me think mine makes me special? Not a darn thing! Plus when I look at the average life expectancy of a Jeep I see that this as keeping production down. Could this be why Dymler/Crystler have cut back 25% of it?s work force? All I know is that I?m keeping my Cherokee ?til the wheels fall off?by that time I will use my monthly SSI check to replace them! Unless of course the wife comes home one day and says, ?Honey, how ?bout we go out and buy you a new Jeep Liberty?? [I doubt it though] When I can haul 2X10 lumber, my yak, a washer, or an extension ladder and still have room for twin 12? woofer boxes in a Toyoda Echo I?ll buy one, but I ain?t holdin? my breath! 8O) [end of rant]” 9:19:15 AM 2/12/01 RE: Nissan Xterra “I am rebuilding my nephew's 1985 Cherokee, my first experience with Jeeps, and made the following observations. It is uni-body, so the attachment of tow hooks and winches requires special brackets. There are no skid plates. There are no drains on axles or tranny. The axle, tranny, transfer case vents are too low for serious water, and are made of ordinary rubber hose, easily torn by brush. Anyone that drives through high water and doesn't drain these fluids afterwards is just living for today.” 9:35:10 AM 2/12/01 RE: Nissan Xterra “We thought about getting an Exterra this fall too. But the reviews on Consumer Reports DEFFINITELY dissuaded that interest. For off-road capabilities it rated very highly, even when compared to larger SUV's. However, in every other category it failed to meet a decent standard. In fact, some categories rated surprisingly poorly, much to my shock. I have the article, and can post of summa the facts for y'all if ya want. I'm an at-home Dad with 2 litluns so my lack of sleep does not allow me to bring up some of these facts for you right this second (at least, tha's what I'm blaming it on, hehe). I can easily enough find the article for anyone that wants it, specially you pineneedles. As a dealer m-nuts, I guess it's something you oughta at least be aware of, the article I mean. Maaaaaany buyers out there like me who don't go without CR suggestions. I tell ya what my 2 choices have come down to pineneedles for this fall. Either the Subaru Forester or the Subaru Outback. Both get waaay much better gas mileage, are all-wheel drive, have better interiors with more cargo space. You heard it correctly, the newer Outbacks even have more cargo space than the Exterra. But now I don't have the same needs as most here. I will not be doing any heavy-duty 4-wheelin, and I need room for 2 (and prolly 3 shortly) litluns, a "fambly" car is what I'm in need of really, that can get "out there" just a wee bit. The Subaru Forester ranks very highly in Consumer Reports, and is somewhat of a wagon/SUV hybrid. And with the high pricetag of the Outback, most likely we'll be gettin us a Forester. I do recall the overall gist of the CR article on the Exterra: if you do not REGULARLY take a vehicle "out there", then you are paying way too much for way, way too little with the Nissan Exterra. In town, it ain't even a tiny bit "all that"! They dang shore are the coolest tho! I likes the ugly yellow color especially, so I disagree with ya there Dude, hehe.” 3:03:23 PM 2/12/01 RE: Nissan Xterra “The difference between a Jeep and any other SUV is.... the Jeep is a toy. Look at Rad's pic. of it, he has another car in the driveway behind it. Jeeps are awesome for 4 wheeling, probably the best in the business. BUT... they suck for day to day use. That's why people out west carry thier jeeps on a trailer and only drive them when the road ends. A 4x4 mag (I don't remeber the name or date) took a Xterra to Moab and tested it out. They were very impressed with it. I'll take my Tacoma anywhere you can drive a Jeep Rady.” 3:18:41 PM 2/12/01 RE: Nissan Xterra “Yeah rad you take that! I'll take my Honda Civic Coupe anywhere you can drive your Jeep RADMAN!! I her'd dat!” 3:32:32 PM 2/12/01 RE: Nissan Xterra “Where are the tree huggers on this one. You that are in favor of the no new road policy of the forest service. Where are you driving that you need four wheel drive that does not negatively effect the environment? Erosion, sediment in sensitive fish habitat, scaring bambi, etc. I want a civilian hummer.” 3:35:11 PM 2/12/01 RE: Nissan Xterra “Do I smell a 4X4 challenge in the making. Rad you been play around in those construction sites again? And those city slicker tires ain't much better than mine. Shorter wheel base+ stiff shocks/springs= bumpy and jarring ride. Funny thought though most of these Jeeps and other suv's aren't truly 4X4's are they? Well not like some of those Rovers at least, I thought one had to do some extra work to the transfer case in order to make them real 4X4's, or something along those lines.” 3:59:06 PM 2/12/01 RE: Nissan Xterra “hey reptiles, my first suggestions were a jeep or a tundra. i definately agree that toyota makes some really nice trucks, and the tacoma is no exception. my dad's tacoma is 6 years old, but you wouldn't think it was anything but brand new. it still drives like it's fresh off the lot. and i see toyota's (and subarus) in lots of offroad competitions. subaru is a favorite of baja racers. 4wd, with a sleek style, makes for a good racer. now, i'll put some money against nekkid ape's civic! LOL!!!!” 4:08:21 PM 2/12/01 RE: Nissan Xterra “DOH! Now rad don't go throwin away good hard-earned money like that!” 12:25:04 AM 2/13/01 Awesome “I drove the 2005 Xterra yesterday with the 4.0L 265HP engine. I am negotiating a price tomorrow, but I am sold already.” 6:52:07 PM 2/16/05 “I love my 2003. no problems at all.” 6:55:16 PM 2/16/05 “Do you remember what the gas mileage numbers were on the 2005 window sticker? I read that the remaining 2004's aren't moving very well because of the much improved 2005 despite a rebate from Nissan. A local dealer has had 2 2004 manual transmission Xterra's in the paper for months now and they don't seem to be moving at $20,199.” 7:02:36 PM 2/16/05 “21 hwy 16 city” 7:38:07 PM 2/16/05 ““I drove the 2005 Xterra yesterday with the 4.0L 265HP engine. I am negotiating a price tomorrow, but I am sold already.” biter.” 7:38:58 PM 2/16/05 “Those are the numbers for the 4x4 with auto transmission. The 4x2 with auto transmission was 22-16.” 7:39:36 PM 2/16/05 “rich, i got my 2004 for 19k. sticker price was 24k.” 7:40:00 PM 2/16/05 “The price means nothing. The monthly payment is what matters. 19k@6% or 24@1%.” 7:45:30 PM 2/16/05 “the payment was what i was concerned with. that's why i walked out on several dealers until i found a dealer who would work with what i was looking for.” 7:53:15 PM 2/16/05 “I want one so bad” 7:59:38 PM 2/16/05 biter? “I found the vehicle I want. That does not make me a 'biter.' Actually this dealer does not have the exact vehicle I want, but I drove a lot of SUV's before I fell in love with the 4x4, 4.0L, 256hp, 16' wheel, Automatic x-mission, Canteen Green, 2005 Nissan Xterra.” 8:06:24 PM 2/16/05 “The gas mileage doesn't seem too bad at all. Scorch sounds like you got a good deal.” 8:42:18 PM 2/16/05 “The 4.0L is a rocket.” 9:15:57 PM 2/16/05 “rich, i think i did. i'm already starting to think of what mods i can do to go offroading.” 9:45:01 PM 2/16/05 “What mods does it need?” 9:46:28 PM 2/16/05 “that's not bad gas mileage - my ford ranger only gets a average of 15 miles to the gallon 4WD and the 4 liter engine.” 12:03:43 AM 2/17/05 “The 4.0L is a rocket.” bbw 4000lbs SUVs are slugs, not rockets. last edited: 2/17/05 2:05:45 AM” 2:02:28 AM 2/17/05 “a used 1987 jeep cherokee w/5spd, 4.0 and 4x4 got me 24mpg hwy...also you can get em in great shape for 2-3k...And they can do serious off roading...i would buy a used jeep and a new camry or accord with what an xterra costs...To me a truck is a truck-they suck for handling and gas...i would never buy one again unless i was a forest ranger etc...just no justification for the poor handling and gas wastage..i d rather drive a camry any day.” 2:31:18 AM 2/17/05 I have 2 Xterra's “I have a 2000 & a 2004 Xterra. Both were my wife's. I used a '95 wrangler that I'll get rid of this summer, probably to my work partner & a Hyundai Elantra that I drive everyday. Both have V6's. The older one has manuel trans but we got auto this time, since the manuel was difficult to get. THe older one didn't have power locks which is a pain-in-the-butt on an Xterra. The manuel has a very high first gear so it has a tendency to stall. My jeep's gearing was very low. I love the auto dimming rear view mirror with temp & compass. But again, I live in the mountains & own 3 SUV's. 99.9% of the time, I drive my Hyundai. I plow with the SUV, haul heavy stuff with it (& trailer) & occasionally take it into the netherlands.” 6:29:09 AM 2/17/05 “Scorch, is there anywhere to drive off road down there? Up here it's pretty limited. There's a few dirt roads around, but most off road driving is on private land or gated because it's on State Forest or gamelands and illegal to drive on. ATVer's don't care because they just go around the gates or just trespass. 25 years ago there used to be lots of places to go off road here and I used to ride my motorcycle off road in many places. Now the land has been turned into strip malls, homes or sold off and gated. I know some people into off roading join clubs which own there own land to drive on. Tower city, I think is one of them. I think that's probably the future of off roading.” 7:17:41 AM 2/17/05 “i think the best place around here would be the pine barrens.” 7:32:07 AM 2/17/05 “That's interesting that New Jersey would have off roading on State land. I thought their regulations would be even more strict than they are in PA.” 7:37:00 AM 2/17/05 “i'm already starting to think of what mods i can do to go offroading.” ScorchFire 10:45:01 PM 2/16/05 what mods?” 8:30:21 AM 2/17/05 “Is Scorchy going to put lifts on it?” 8:31:32 AM 2/17/05 “looking into supercharging it (i'll have to save up my pennies for that one becuase unfortunately i couldn't afford buying it already supercharged), getting off road tires (prob bf goodrich all terrains since they are good all around) and possibley putting a lift and exhaust. for now i'll settle with stock. just doing some research. rich, i never said it was legal : ) actually, there are some areas that people go four wheeling.” 11:04:22 AM 2/17/05 “i'd REALLY like tires like these: http://www.4wheelonline.com/Products.aspx?CategoryId=2132&ProductId=8960 but some of those tires aren't exactly legal to drive on the streets. i'd have to have the stock tires for driving on pavement and then have an extra set for offroading. plus they're expensive as hell. last edited: 2/17/05 11:07:06 AM” 11:06:14 AM 2/17/05 “I show up to the dealership at 9:15 and find out my salesman called in sick. They start paging his backup and it turns out he is out with a customer. Too bad. I drove 50 miles and bought my Xterra from another dealer. I stopped at the store on the way home and found a guy checking it out in the parking lot. He was all wow and gee. So was I.” 5:28:17 PM 2/17/05 “how much? what color? v6 4x4? supercharged? details my fellow xterra owner. details.” 5:57:05 PM 2/17/05 “mmm.... xTerra.... [drool]” 6:12:59 PM 2/17/05 “I am paying $390 for five years, smoke color, 4.0L V6, 4X4.” 6:24:07 PM 2/17/05 “i never figured Scorchy for a Philly redneck - i think Luke's "texas" is starting to rub off!” 10:06:31 PM 2/17/05 “I never figured Scorchie for anything, but. That girl is pure redneck.” 10:10:58 PM 2/17/05 Come see ours! “Hey ya all...we have a 2000 green.... http://www.freewebs.com/nwhikergirl/snowshoeingtrips.htm Scroll down to the first photo to see his baby. It is lifted, that is an ARB bumber on the front. She is a sweet ride..... But what can I say? We own 2 SUV's and nothing else! ;-)” 10:15:53 PM 2/17/05 “A blower is unnecessary for an offroader. A blower is for flat out balls to the wall speed. Low end torque, suspension clearance, and luggy tires is what an offroader needs.” 10:16:17 PM 2/17/05 To which I should add.... “To anyone thinking about doing mods on an X, there are numerous forum boards out there, just on the X! Synchro has done quite a few mods...but then again, we ACTUALLY DO GO offroading ;-) Don't get a lift or big tires if you won't really use them! Your gas mileage will blow if you do. synchro gets around 12-14 mpg usually, because of the weight added to his truck (skid plates, bumpber, etc.) and the lift can cause a higher chance of rollovers if you don't know how to handle it.” 10:20:38 PM 2/17/05 “i can get nissans cheap, really cheap, and i just payed off my Sport trac...wonder if i can convince miss opie to want a Nissan Z” 11:13:39 PM 2/17/05 “350z's are freakin awesome (i'm not a redneck afterall). sarbar, i like your x!” 7:52:47 AM 2/18/05 “Thanxs Scorchie! When I met synchro.....and saw his X I was in love at first sight ;-) Hehheh!!” 9:23:16 PM 2/18/05 “hahaha.. does he know that you love his x more?” 7:34:51 AM 2/19/05 “Sssshhhhhhh!! He even lets me drive it ;-) Hehheh!! Of course he calls my Explorer "Family Sedan With Height". Snort. AT least I can get 18 mpg......lol!” 7:54:16 AM 2/19/05
