I think if you want honest oppinion this is where I would come.

I like the silver ones the best, but I think they are overpriced. And because there is no way that I can afford one I havent' really looked at them at all and I have no friends that owns one so the only oppinion that I have is silver is teh coolest... Unless you eat it then go with ornage.

Thanks. I'm afraid they are just a trend. My top two choices are the Xterra and the Chevy Tahoe. Oh yea...I don't like silver because everyone has silver...ugh..it is cool though.

RE: Nissan Xterra
It might be okay if ya got a yello cell phone to match it. ya know for you can drive and talk and match all at the same time! If it was my choice I would go for the Chevy. I think that they are trendy but, I also think that it is just a trend. The look is going to get old. And fade out. Kinda like the old VW van. Okay that might be a bad example but...

You are right though, everyone does have silver, and yellow is the second best color.

Personally, I like the Pathfinder. Have seen some Xterra's for low 20's (2000's), but a friend has one, and it's a bit small on the inside for me and my puppy.

I'm heading to Vehix.com, where one can research stat's on quality, rollover history, etc...

RE: Nissan Xterra
The v6 XTerra completely blows away every other suv in its price range. And for good reason. The engine is the same v6 that was used in the Frontier for years. The body is also based on the Frontier, a tested and true design. Have you driven one yet? Definately go do that. I guarantee that you will be very impressed with the ride and handling. It makes the Explorer, Blazer, Jimmy, feel like a log wagon compared to it. XTerra has an amazingly smooth ride, especially considering the ground clearance it has. The resale value also is a big factor. The XTerra will hold its value way better than any of the domestic sport utes. Why? Because Nissans are built to last. If you want a vehicle that you can be hard on and still get 200,000 miles out of, go with the Nissan. As for the Wrangler, when it gets 50,000 miles on it (if you can stand riding in the rattle-trap for that long) it will be falling apart. Talk about an uncomfortable ride. Comparing it to the 4Runner, well, do you really want to spend the extra $10,000 for the Toyota? Every major automotive magazine has agreed that the XTerra is the beat suv in its class. It even won Motor Trends coveted "suv of the year" award. Also I think you will find that Nissans sales and service departments are top-notch. They run a very tight ship.

So you are all gonna yell at me now, but that'l ok. I totally disagree with people having SUVs EXCEPT if they have a legitimate use for 4 wheel drive or need all of the space. If you live in the suburbs and will commute with it, get a car. Don't waste the gas or the raw materials needed to produce those land behemoths.

RE: Nissan Xterra
Alpine, I'd have to disagree. My pops has been a mechanic on strictly foreign cars for over twenty years, and from his experience Nissan cars and pickups are top quality. I've had two Nissan trucks and I ended up selling each only because one i needed the money and the other when i went to college. They outlasted me. BUT, as for the SUV's nissan makes, they don't have as good a record as the pickups and cars. I don't have much expereience with the Tahoe, but my father-in-law has one and i love it.

RE: Nissan Xterra
Hey chunga, how can you disagree with me when I haven't offered an opinion? I think it was Alps you were after. Anyway, since I'm here now I'll weigh in with my .02.

My bias is definitely towards the imports. I used to have a Toyota 4x4, V6, Ex-cab truck that was one tough rig. Never had a bit of problems with it. Bought it when it was about 1.5 years old, drove it for four more years and sold it for exactly what I payed for it. Now that's resale value! While my example may be a bit unusual, Toyotas (and imports in general) are well known for holding their value, while usually having minimal problems. Certainly better than any domestic rig. I've never owned a Nissan truck/SUV, but I wouldn't hesitate to do so. My friends have had good luck with them.

Now if you're after nickle and dime problems, plummeting value, and what everyone else has... Get an Explorer, Jeep, Tahoe, etc. Yawn!!

RE: Nissan Xterra
Xterra is a good SUV, good friend of mine has one. Only thing I saw on it that I didn't like was what looked like some cheap looking plastic that was used in the interior as well as the grill. But they are considered best in their class, and I think the yellow is kick-ass different. But, I'm a Wrangler fanatic. But if I was looking for a new SUV I'd wait for the new Jeep Liberty. It's the replacement for the classic Cherokee. If you get a chance, go to the Jeep site and check it out, nice contemporary look for the Cherokee. Saw one at the auto show with a bunch of goodies attached to it, looked better than any Land Rover I've seen.

RE: Nissan Xterra
I have been happy with the Nissians I have owned in the past and still own today. Used to have an older 300ZX turbo till a freind wrecked it. Once I got the settlement check I went out and got a '94 4X4 xtra cab pickup. It has 107k miles on it now and is still going strong. I have hardly dropped a penny into it. Nissians are cheaper to fix then any Toyota by far and will last just as long.

The Xterra looks to be just a tad on the small size for me. It is a nice concepted, design and targeted for the weekend warriors. Kinda faddy! but hey it has a first aid kit. COOOL!!! I chuckle every time I see that commercial where they are craming some bikes into the back on the rainy day like it ain't no thing. 2 riders and 1 bike where did the other bike go? I think that it the commercial.

Get a full size pickup w/a extra cab and throw a cap on the back!! It will be the most versatile vechicle you will ever own. I kinda like those newer Sport Tracs from Ford and can't wait to see the new Chevy Avalanche. I think those will be the next big hit in the SUV market.

I want to know who takes their $40K+ SUV off road?

RE: Nissan Xterra
Your enthusiasm is great Rad. I'm not sure what kind of contest you are proposing, but there is nothing you can do off-road in a Wrangler that you can't do in an XTerra, and you'll be much more comfortable in the Nissan. Plus you will have room to bring along 3 friends 2 dogs and everyones gear. Try that in a Wrangler.
To everyone who thinks the Xterra is a new, or concept, vehicle, its not. As I said before, the Xterra is based on the Nissan 4x4 pickup. They took the p/u frame and put an suv body on it. With vibration damping mounts between frame and body to provide the exceptionally smooth ride that is so rare in sport utes (and non-existant in Wranglers). The Nissan Design team in La Jolla, CA spent years in the mountains, on the beaches, in the woods, watching people (like me) load gear (and people and dogs) into ramshackle station wagons and beat-up trucks trying to figure out what we would want in a sport ute. They truly put the UTILITY back in sport utility. No leather, no walnut trim, no dvd rewinder. Just an affordable, functional, dependable, reliable, high-quality vehicle to get you there and back.
Oldie, I also agree with you. Don't buy an SUV if you aren't gonna use it off-road as intended (tread-lightly please). For commuting and around town buy an ecomomical small car like a Civic or Sentra.

RE: Nissan Xterra
i'm not saying that pineneedles should get one. i'm just saying that the only off road mpvs that would be better suited for offroad use are either a defender or a hummer. and even they can't get many places that a jeep c/y/tj can. hell, i even have a forest service sign for a trail that says JEEP / no TRUCK / no CAR.

i was just disputing a few of the generalized comments you've made...

"The v6 XTerra completely blows away every other suv in its price range."

for what use?

"...there is nothing you can do off-road in a Wrangler that you can't do in an XTerra, and you'll be much more comfortable in the Nissan"

ithere is alot that you can do in a wrangler that you can't do in an xterra, but i think this statement is the key to most peoples dilemma... "you'll be much more comfortable in the Nissan." the jeep is made for one reason. the xterra is made for many.

RE: Nissan Xterra
I agree that the Wrangler is a very specialized vehicle. As far as off-road ability goes, what it really comes down to (amongst comparable vehicles) is driver ability. I think you would be hard pressed to find someplace where a Wrangler could go that an XTerra with an experienced driver could not. Although I will admit that you may be able to squeeze one through a tight spot that physical size would prevent an Xterra from getting in.
But I don't agree with off-roading for the sake of off-roading. Most of the time I am parking at or near a trail-head and hiking in.

RE: Nissan Xterra
Jeeps inspire more clubs, rallys, jamborees, owner support, etc. than any other off road vehicle. They must be doing something right.

When I was a kid on the farm, my dad bought a new '76 Wagoneer. Damn thing went through mud, snow, hauled hay wagons, and chased cows through the pasture at 3:00am for many years. We finally sold it after 200k+ miles and it was still going strong. I realize one example does not a demographic make, but it was the most dependable vehicle in the worst WI weather, and you can't convince me Jeep doesn't set the bar for 4X4.

Of course, it wasn't pretty, and didn't convert to a camper.

RE: Nissan Xterra
For daily on the road travel, they are the worst. The bumpest rigid ride that is guranteed to rock you kidneys and spine like they have never been before. But that is the Jeep's ride, some people like squirrelly handling and some don't. If you like trying to fight to keep it on the road then this is the ride for you. I for one would do not like that all the time, shakes my beer too much.

They(Wranglers) also lack room for people and storage. You can definitely find some other make of 4X4 that will provide what the Wrangler lacks. It is an over specialized automobile, there is no need to buy one unless you plan on doing alot of off roading and buying the neccesary after market parts needed to do some of the feats that jeeps are know for doing. Even if you plan to be real serious about it and try your hand at rock crawling, the factory car is still lacking. Plus I doubt you would want to take your daily driver out and ruin it even if you had the cash for repairs. I would be willing to bet that most Jeep (non suv's) owners have another car that they drive.

They are cold and drafty in the winter time. No matter what kind of top you have on it.

Should we even talk about accidents and side impacts.

There is no questioning what the Willey did for the American troops in WWII. This modern day "Willey" is nothing like the original. If you are wanting to portray a certain (macho) imagine for yourself then maybe the Jeep is for you.

RE: Nissan Xterra
Minister of Truth-you really missed the mark on that flame of Jeeps. Perhaps with the older Jeeps some of the things you said are true, but the new TJ's are light years from the previous models, I've owned 3. The quadra-coil suspension that they have now are no worse than any other SUV that I've been in, no kidney bruses or anything along those lines. My Jeep is a daily driver, my only car, and is as comfortable as any other SUV and short of a 50 mph side gust have I ever had to adjust to stay on the road. As for thier off-road capabilites? Well- straight off the line they can do the Rubicon trail. Every model that Jeep sells is given that trail test, and if that's not capable enough for you I don't know what is? And if your wanting to do more, you don't have to spend a ton on extras to take it to the next level. Now for space, well, yeah it's not a family car. But the rear seat is the easiest seat to remove that I've ever seen and provides plenty of room when out, and is very light to pull out. As for the cold? I have not found it any differnt than any other car. In fact, my Jeep's heater blows like a furnace as well as the AC really cranks out. When I've had it below freezing temps, as soon as the motor was warm that cab was toasty, and I have a soft top only. What the Jeep is is a convertable SUV, that is fun as hell to drive and creates a certain pride in knowing that your jeep can kick the ass of just about any thing else on the road. They are great cars, have a cult following, and are as customizable as anything else out there. Are they are car? No, are they a family SUV? No, but they are a a unique, fun, very capable, drop down vehicle.
