speaking of nights “Has anyone hikes nights in the summer, deserts to avoid the heat? If you have how did it work out?” 10:32:02 PM 2/10/01 RE: speaking of nights “summer nights are wonderful. i hike days and nights. i like heat.” 10:40:16 PM 2/10/01 RE: speaking of nights “I hibernate in the Summer. It's too hot.” 12:03:40 AM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “Come hike Michigan in the summer, Dude. It's nice and cool here! Specially in the UP.” 12:06:37 AM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “I hibernate in winter I can never put on enough clothes to stay warm” 12:07:32 AM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “cb it actually feels a lot warmer in the dry cold that comes with snow than the wet humid cold that we have here on the Gulf Coast. I luv snow and think you would too.” 12:48:07 AM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “Sunshine I'll be there as soon as it hits 70 degrees for about a week. You gonna lemme crash on your couch?” 12:50:38 AM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “speaking of nights and night hikes..... shining rocks wilderness...full moon....fall...... peak experience... on the do-over list.” 12:53:49 AM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “shining rocks in the pale moonlight...sounds blissful, Om. :o) lobo, night hiking can be some of the best times in summer, particularly with the carniverous black flies we have in the east! =:0 Swimming at night, while on the trail, is great too...you can go underwater and resurface still in blackness. Plus, the water at night often feels warm, in the cooler night air. It is especially cool when mist is rising from the surface. Ahhhhh I miss summer swimmin'at night. Calgon, take me awayyyyy” 6:00:21 AM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “you mean those are just flies Amy. here all along I was ducking thinking they were bats or something. LOL” 9:30:15 AM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “I hiked the grand Canyon rim-rim-rim a few years back and when we made the trip back, we did it in two days. We left acmp at about 4 in the morning to beat the sun and it worked great. It's amazing how different terrain can look when it's dark out. Just make sure you have some kind of light with you, but other then that, just enjoy the cool temps and beautiful stars.” 10:55:01 AM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “I hiked at night (or patroled rather) around the deserts of New Mexico and west Texas. The nights are cool, so you can keep warm by moving. During the day the heat is crazy, best beaten by a tarp. Set up your tarp low to the ground, but leave some space up to allow for air flow, then dig down under your tarp. Laying on the sand during the day sucks because it is about 10 degrees hotter right where the baking sun heats the ground. As for moving across the desert, I never used a trail, just compass and map. When doing this, make sure you check terrain and plan for washes or wadis, they can be nasty at night unless you use a headlamp. Another hazzard is athe plants that almost always have thorns, a pair of above the ankle leather boots were my savior quite a few times.” 11:08:50 AM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “Watch out and lissen good for rattle sneeks! I like walkin at nite. I got good eys for nite walkin and I can walk first and my daddy can see my yeller butt and follo me good. But usully we walk at day time and get tired and sleepy and clos our eylips at nite. I like to dig a cool place in the dirt, too, but my daddy always makes me fix it before we leeve.” 7:07:01 PM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “Hey Sarabelle, I thought dogs couldn't see color - one reason they have good night vision. How do you know yor butt is yellow?” 7:24:34 PM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “busted!” 7:34:36 PM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “What is "yellow"? /o:3” 7:48:27 PM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “"yeller"” 7:52:40 PM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “I know, I know! Gojo probably says stuff like "Sarabelle, get yer yeller butt back here" when you chase them tree rats away from the tent.” 7:53:37 PM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “Dog panting: dO:3” 8:30:31 PM 2/11/01 RE: speaking of nights “Sarabelle, I'm kinda worried that Daddy follers ya yella butt, ya'll might keep one eye open at night.” 12:20:00 PM 2/12/01 RE: speaking of nights “Her hiney is all that is visible behind her pack. It kinda glows in the dark. I once had a black lab that would lead home after dark, but he was hell to keep up with!” 3:23:36 PM 2/12/01 RE: speaking of nights “LoL” 4:40:09 PM 2/12/01 RE: speaking of BUTTS “I've just changed the subject of this thread, lol :{}” 5:12:15 PM 2/12/01 RE: speaking of nights “LH the real question is could we follow your butt in the dark? LOL!” 5:17:14 PM 2/12/01 RE: speaking of nights “didn't we just discuss that subject on the "men in tights" thread?!? LOL =:0” 5:17:39 PM 2/12/01 RE: speaking of nights “Yes but we didn't discuss yours Amy so the same question goes out to you!” 5:19:38 PM 2/12/01 RE: speaking of nights “oooh, spammy gettin' feisty! You could certainly follow my hiney on the trail, dear...it ain't hard to miss! ;oP” 5:27:28 PM 2/12/01 RE: speaking of nights “I don't think you would have any trouble with a following AmyG iffin the backside looks as good as the frontside!” 5:32:38 PM 2/12/01 RE: speaking of nights “Night hiking in the summer in the desert is awesome! Under a full moon, you can see and navigate with no problems. I love to hike Anza or J Tree or even Death Valley at night in the summer time. Night hiking anywhere under a full moon is cool, but especially so in the desert because of how open it is. You can see as clear as day! Night hiking is also a great way to get a crowded national park to yourself. It's so cool to walk around Yosemite Valley under a full moon after everyone else is asleep. The moon reflects so brightly off the sheer near-white granite. If conditions are just right, you can even see a moon-bow (the nighttime equivalent of a rainbow) at the base of some of the waterfalls. That is an image that is burned indelibly on my brain. 8-)” 5:27:01 AM 2/13/01 RE: speaking of nights “I've done some Grand Canyon night hiking. I've hiked Thunder River a couple of times and Grandview and South Kaibab. I just carry a flashlight in my hand and leave it off most of the time. I sing moonshadow.” 5:32:32 AM 2/13/01 RE: speaking of nights “I'm being followed by a moonshadow... Isn't it amazing how strong a shadow the full moon will cast? I used to think that was the coolest thing about night hiking... until I saw that moon-bow. You know the sense of awe and wonder that comes over you when you see a beautiful rainbow? Well, multiply that by 10, and add in the incredible feeling of privilege, the knowledge that I, and I alone, was looking on a site that no one else was seeing, and that few people ever see. 8-)” 6:00:23 AM 2/13/01
