RE: time travel....
I'd like to travel back to a time before light pollution, when you could walk out on the beach on a moonless night and look up at a million stars set against the inky blackness.

I'd lie back on the sand (clean, no garbage or oil spills), listen to the surf (uninterrupted by helicopters or airplanes) and begin to understand why the ancients thought their lives were influenced by the stars.

RE: time travel....
This was actually a question I remember from a Jr. High history class. I wrote a paper about how I would go back to early Rome. With a few 'magic' flashlights, an M-16 and all the ammo I could carry I'd declare myself as emperor and living god.

The teacher thought it was funny but I don't remember what grade he gave me on it.

Go back to the beginning of time and squash one bug, then come to the future ans see what happened.

Marty, you can't effect the space/time continuum!
Back to the Future was/is an underappreciated masterpiece. Dr. Emmitt Brown explains it all. So you slackers, get out there and rent it again for the first time.

RE: time travel....
yes, but along that same theory, foreward time travel is impossible since the Universe has yet to split. I take it you're refering to the theory of quantum mechaincs that we are living in one of infinate universes that are constantly splitting.

This reminds me of that Simpsons time travel episode where Homer is causing all sorts of trouble because of his travels. Please refrain from stepping on bugs when you go back yonder cause it might start raining donuts in 2001.

The 60's! What a great time to have some money, I think. You know what they say, "If you can remember the 60's, you weren't really there."

RE: time travel....
Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity clearly removes any doubt regarding the ability to travel backwards into your own past. To do so would inherently require the ability to travel faster than the speed of light. While recent scientific findings have found traveling faster than the speed of light is possible, that is only true for something which has always done so. In other words, it is not possible to begin from a speed less than "c", and then traverse across the speed of light barrier to some speed greater than "c". To do so would require an infinite amount of energy, more than all the energy of the Universe! E =mc* However, by traveling at relativistic speeds approaching that of C, one could theoretically slow down time, thus giving the appearance that you can travel into the future.

I'd go back to when I was in the fourth grade and I'd be a mentor to myself. Maybe I'd get it right the second time around.

RE: time travel....
Spock,
According to a current theory of in quantum mechanics, it would be possible to travel to "back in time." This theory states that time is just a series of events where the universe splits. So there are infinate univereses which are out of phase with our own. Since the universes just split, then you wouldn't be going back in time, just to that particular universe. If you happened to change something, then all that would happen is that universe would yet againg split and start off an a tangent, so you couldn't alter the current state of the universe.

Well if you really want to get technical about it...

Time is not real, it does not exist.

Hey, Spock, I happen to be reading that book. It's a bit of a deep wade, but I think I follow him. I wish I could ask him some questions, though.
Try reading Jean Gebser. He talks of the Ever-Present Origin. Tough reading, but quite intriguing.

RE: time travel....
T-N, next time your boss tells you that you are late, simply pull out the old Theory of Relativity... in other words, time is relative. There can always be found a moving frame of reference in which an observer will see your arrival at work at an earlier time than your boss observes. Even one in which you arrive on time.
Viola!
