Energy Bars “Buyer beware: energy bars may be no better than yumblilicious bagels What you're really paying for is convenience. See the story: http://my.webmd.com/living_better_content/fit/article/1676.52481” 11:30:22 AM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “I use the bars but not for ?energy?. I?m a cyclist, part of one of the first groups to buy into the myth. Sugar, any sugar supplies ?energy?. The thing is a bagel or banana is not much good after 4 hours in the back pocket of my sweaty cycling jersey. I use them in the wilderness too. But then it is for the other nutritional values (other than sugar). I?ve been out for days with the only thing hot to eat are soup and drinks. The bars were a large part of the food on those trips. No cook backpacking is good if you are in a hurry and don?t want to pack a stove or cooking pot. There are lots ways to heat water without a big stove. There are lots of threads here about the light alterative.” 11:52:23 AM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “I heard you can make a stove from a Pepsi can. Does anyone know how to do it or where I can find plans?” 12:36:13 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars 12:41:28 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars 12:45:10 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “wait a second flyguy (or wiseguy?), you are in that thread.” 12:47:19 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “Hey, lookie what I found!!! "Y2k Canned Heat" DISCLAIMER: I am not a chemist, nor do I have any training in this field. I?m just a guy that found this recipe, bought the ingredients put them together, and it worked. Any production you might do, is at your own risk. Ingredients: Calcium Acetate Ethanol 6 oz tuna can or cat food can 2, Clean 35 milimeter film canisters Coat hanger (strong metal) Mixing Procedure: Mix 11 Miligrams of Calcium Acetate (1/2 a film canister) with 10 mills of water. (fills up the canister) Then shake for 10 seconds, let it sit for approximately one minute then shake once more for 10 seconds, make sure the Calcium Acetate is completely dissolved. Measure 10 mills of the solution and pour into can. Slowly add 40 mills of ethanol. As you add the ethanol, the mixture should "Gel" instantly. At this point I poured off any remaining Ethanol (a very small amount, looked like about 1/10 of an oz.) Because this mixture gels instantly, you do not have to combine the two until you need to use it for cooking Once the solution has Gelled (approximately instantly), it is ready to use. Cooking Each can of "Canned Heat" will put out enough heat to fry anything for a period of 22 minutes. We used a 12 inch aluminum frying pan for the testing. (we were able to cook two eggs, two pancakes, and 6 pieces of bacon with one can.) If what you are cooking will take more than 22 minutes, have a second can ready to use.” 12:47:58 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “I like Cliff bars. There are flavors I like, they are compact, neat and have a longer shelf life than a bagel. Some are relatively low fat, too. I usually by them by the dozen at REI, get a discount.” 12:49:35 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “I drink at Energy Bars all the time! Ja'Patmon...Jimmy Cliff bars are jah bess!” 1:56:42 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “does anybody use the "goo" stuff they are trying to sell as a nutritional supplement? that stuff has gotta be nasty.” 5:56:06 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “Flyguy, what is the clothes hanger for?” 6:28:30 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “Switchback, The goo is like flavored vaseline. But, it's 110 calories for one ounce and has caffeine. Have used them before but will never again. Regarding energy bars, powerbar harvest and luna bars are the shiznit!” 6:36:14 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “I stock up on Clif bars before I head out. I haven't found a single flavor I didn't like. Cindy Lu makes some granola/energy bars of her own that are good. I will probably eventually do the same when I have a kitchen 'cause those energy bars are pretty expensive.” 6:52:05 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “Gatoraid has energy bars out now and they're HUGE (just saw them in the supermarket today), but they weren't on my list so I didn't buy 'em. Maybe next time.” 6:53:48 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “You want the ultimate easy to start camp stove. Just take Powdered rust and aluminum powder together. Add some Potassium Permanginate and start by adding glycerine. That will boil water pretty damned fast.” 8:58:42 PM 2/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “I bought this magnesium stick that you scrape off shavings and light them with the attached flint. The first time I tried it, I put the shavings on the floor of my basement. After a few seconds, it heated up the floor to the point that the moisture in the concrete reached its boiling point and BOOM it blew up. A piece of the flying lit magnesium hit me in the forehead, fell onto my glasses (the eye-side) and burnt the lense right in the middle of my view. Ugh! Thanks, but nothanks Deathmarch...I don't need something else blowing up in my face!” 1:39:10 PM 2/13/01 RE: Energy Bars “I don't believe I would have told that story on myself.” 1:46:03 PM 2/13/01 RE: Energy Bars “I'm actually wondering if anybody has done what I suggested, or even knows what it is. I'll give you a hint, they used it to construct the rail-roads.” 2:42:59 PM 2/13/01 RE: Energy Bars “Oh yea, I belive you can start it with shaved magnesium.” 2:43:43 PM 2/13/01 RE: Energy Bars “My bestest engerny bars are hors doodoos that I find layin on the ground. The stinkier the better! I can feel the engerny reel fast and I get reeel strawng and I can hop and run and walk reeel good. They taste reel good, to.” 3:22:44 PM 2/13/01 RE: Energy Bars “Maybe Cindy Lou can share her Energy Bar recipe with us.” 3:23:24 PM 2/13/01 RE: Energy Bars “cindy lou, ok. Sarabelle, no way!” 6:50:13 PM 2/13/01 RE: Energy Bars “I'll try to get it written down with quantities and directions into a useable recipe that someone besides me can understand, but it's really still in R&D mode.” 7:24:17 PM 2/13/01 RE: Energy Bars 1:07:07 PM 2/14/01 RE: Energy Bars “I have digged this recipe out of my dusty archive just for you all. Here is my often imitated but never duplicated recipe for Homemade Energy Bars. 1 C Oat Bran 1/2 C Toasted Sunflower and/or Sesame seeds, ground (I use a food processor) 1/2 C Soy Milk Powder (the stuff I get has ~37% maltodextrin, ~20% dextrose) 1/2 C Raisins 2 T Carob Powder Mix well, then add to 1/2 C Brown Rice, Cooked and minced (using a food processor again) 1/2 C Peanut Butter (more or less, depending on consistency) 1/2 C Honey (I use clear, runny kind, you may need to warm if it's thicker and/or add a little water) Stir and knead (I knead in more Oat Bran or Rolled Oats if needed. Or is that kneaded?) until thoroughly mixed. A cake mixer works well for this. The bars can be reasonably soft, as a night in the fridge helps to bind it all together. Roll or press out about 1cm thick and cut. Makes about 16, the size I like them (approx 1cm x 1.5cm x 6cm). Yumblilicious!” 9:55:24 AM 2/15/01 RE: Energy Bars “Yesterday, the owner of the local outfitter grabbed from a box and handed me 5 Cliff Bars and said I could have them...said they are "near their expiration date". I didn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but when I got home I noticed they are Apricot flavor...which turns out to be the one fruit I always pass up when digging through fruity gorp. Now I know why nobody wanted them! I'll bet they don't Really taste so bad.” 10:18:17 AM 11/11/01 RE: Energy Bars “I like Zone Perfect bars. Apple & Peanut Butter flavor (Strawberry is terrible). Am I the only one who thinks Carrot Cake Cliff bars are YUCK?!” 3:15:41 PM 11/11/01 RE: Energy Bars “Buddur, you don't like apricots? I love them, in trail mix, in preserves, in muffins, in tea! But I don't know about Clif Bars. I've tried Power Bars, which are kind of like the inside of a butterfinger candy bar, only exponentially harder to chew.” 3:39:40 PM 11/11/01 RE: Energy Bars “I like the power bar harvest or luna bars myself” 4:59:38 PM 11/11/01 RE: Energy Bars “Cliff Bars rock! I like the Ice Series with whole coffee beans in them. Carrot cake is the best. I like all the Luna bars also. The Chai is yummy!” 5:13:26 PM 11/11/01 RE: Energy Bars “Lemme tell ya...those Apricot bars are everything I was afraid they were gonna be!” 6:16:42 PM 11/11/01 RE: Energy Bars “The real Buddur would probably love them.” 6:18:25 PM 11/11/01 RE: Energy Bars “right on, running chick! I haven't met a Clif bar that I didn't like. I love the freedom that the nutrition bars afford you on the trail. It is consoling to have a hot meal at the end of the day but I can imagine going several days without cooking on the trail.” 7:22:17 PM 11/11/01 RE: Energy Bars “I love apricot. Give them to me.” 7:48:07 PM 11/11/01 RE: Energy Bars “Anyone tried Krave bars. Just like candy with some stuff that's good for ya.” 9:30:58 PM 11/11/01 RE: Energy Bars “I like Luna Bars, Clif Bar Ice Series or Cookies & Cream. Just tried the Balance Caramel & Nut.” 5:53:42 AM 11/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “We have a thing we make over here called a Tarantua Biscuit. They are made of Golden Syrup, oatmeal, sugar and butter. They also work well as house bricks or floor pavers.” 6:57:48 AM 11/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “In New Hampshire, I took several different brands. Cliff Bars, Luna Bars, Power Bars, Gatorade Bars, & several others. Power Bars are the only ones that work for me.” 7:03:14 AM 11/12/01 RE: Energy Bars “I tried taking more nutrition bars with me on the llama hike last August. After a couple days at altitude my appetite started to go away and the nutrition bars made me gag. I gave them away. I do like Nature Valley Granola, Quaker Cereal bars and a local brand called Henry's you buy at Henry's Stores (sort of like a Trader Joe's, only more stuff). My wife loves the Balance bars. We buy them by the case now at Sam's Club.” 9:11:02 AM 11/12/01
