“Come on down y'all, one night ain't worth a plane ticket for sure! I'm plannin on hittin the trail on Thursday, so lemme know if ya wanna fly down and also see Laurel-Snow Pocket Wilderness. Prior to Gizzard, I'll be doing a cupla nights in Snow Pocket. This'll also consist (for me anyway) of some cross-country travel, of which if you don't wanna do, just follow the trail to where I (we) will be staying for the night. All that will consist of being handled is getting ya from airport to Snow Pocket. From there I can get myself and anyone else to Gizzard. WD says it's about an hour distant from parking area to parking area.

Now as for my pre-trip trip for Thur and Fri ......... it'll either be to Laurel/Snow Pocket Wilderness or to the Obed section of the Cumberland Trail. Both will require some cross-country. Now with what I'm interested in doing in Snow Pocket, I'll likely not take anyone along. If someone else wants to add some days to the Fiery Gizzard Trip, logistics can easily be worked out to hike the Obed River corridor. That is a total of 14 miles with 2.5'ish of that being cross-country It'll require a shuttle from the parking area to a drop-off location @ 2.5 miles due E of the Cumberland Trail/Obed gorge rim. Pending shuttle, this'll be a great trip, prolly with a 1.5 to 2 hour transport from the Obed parking lot to the Gizzard parking lot on Fri morning.

Walkingdude, I got that Morgan Springs Quad yesterday and WHOA does that gorge go longer than I expected. From Buzzard Point, it's about 4 miles due N (cross-country) to a good campsite location and area to easily cross the gorge. Then it's about a 5 mile c-c hike E and S to hit the gorge rim and eventually (hopefully) the trail to Laurel Falls. Hike total will be roughly 15 miles. There are some jeep roads and somewhat of a trail in some of these c-c sections. Trouble is ...... practically all of the c-c is N of the pocket wilderness boundary. The topo is from '72, so there are likely some rural areas here. Or worse, a paper corporation owns the land and have pine forests (which most likely will be thick) or clear-cuts. When these corps plant trees, they make sure to plant any roads, trails, or dirt tracks to help keep out tresspassers. Speaking for myself, if I get lost or it takes me a cupla days to get outa the mess I might find myself in, big whooptidoo. But I'm not gonna get someone else in that situation, and spoil THEIR Gizzard Trip.

WD when I move to Cali, I'll give ya the topo with my perspective c-c trek. It looks like a GREAT one, that'll eliminate nearly every mile of backtracking. I need to get a decent cumpass tho, instead of that little cheezy keychain thang.

Rad this is gonna be a fab trip, ya might wanna change up that April line-up! Oh yeah, for you that ponder a plane ticket, I'm certain that WD said that section of the Cumberland Trail is WELL worth your effort. I'll need to chat with ya WD sometime about mebbe lining up a Thur morning to lunch'ish shuttle from the Devil's Breakfast Table Parking up the service road that parallels the Obed gorge/trail to the S about halfway up toward the other parking area-----> to be dropped off for the c-c section of the hike (dang izat one sentance!?) .......

Naked Ape, I know that Cumberland Trail map I sent ya would fling a cravin on you!! I've only been as far as Breakaway Overlook but it's a nice piece of trail what I've seen.
Now, If you want me to further stir you up, There's an even BETTER section of the Cumberland Trail near Chattanooga on signal Mountain. I can't send ya a good map of that place cause they quit makin that section map for now and my last copy is gettin pretty tattered.
