Mtn gal, if you are so happy with your looks how come you never sent a pic to Phil for the web page. Unless you did send him a pic and it was the one that Phil had us all guess who it was?

pekka, maybe we can get a TT Ice Age Trail hike going. Have you done any of it? I know Oldie will be eager to do another hunk of it...and so will I. There's gotta be others within driving range for a long weekend hike.

RE: No Summer School WOOOHOOO!!!!
cindy lu, I live really close to the Parrish & Harrison Hills segments. Only about 25 minutes south. It's absolutely nuts, but I have just taken a day hike on a small part of the Parrish section, and have not walked any of the Harrison Hills section, though I have driven through on the bisecting county highway. Though I haven't seen a topo, it is a hilly area. We had a talk last spring at our Paddle & Trail club by Ice Age Trail members, including aerial slides of the country it traverses near here. I certainly plan toget the maps and get on it. The Harrison Hills section gets a high rating in the new Backpacking Wisconsin guidebook. The book mentions some trails in the Blue Hills closer to Minnesota, too. Ever done those?

RE: No Summer School WOOOHOOO!!!!
Blue Hills?? In Wisconsin?? Do you mean Blue Mound, as in the park by Madison?

The section of Ice Age Trail running through Kettle Moraine looked nice. Even has those (what I take to be) mice-infested shelters there.

Hmmm... maybe I could get in on a section. I don't know my schedule at all for this summer. Job hunting. Although I may be kinda self-employed, on the other hand. :-)

RE: No Summer School WOOOHOOO!!!!
The Blue Hills, I think, are over near Ladysmith, north of Eau Claire. Maybe a bit toward Barron? I have to check my book at home. I pass signs on my way across U.S. 8 when I go to the Twin Cities. But there are some trails in that area.

Our local IAT sections are pretty far north of the Kettle Moraine sections, and subsequently much less traveled. One of my English colleagues told me at lunch that she has a good friend who is involved in the Ice Age Trail Association up in these parts. So I can get questions answered if I have to. Also, the group usually has a display with pamphlets and maps at Rutabaga's Canoecopia show, which is coming up in Madison on March 9-11. If you go, my wife's best friend from H.S., who now is an outfitter, will be doing talks on great places to go in the U.P. of Michigan.

RE: No Summer School WOOOHOOO!!!!
Hey pekka, I'm in NE Iowa... both Madison and Twin Cities are about 2-1/2 to 3 hours away. Have heard of Canoecopia and who knows, maybe we'll go this year. Boyfriend sure would like a canoe. :-)

lizs, it's a dangerous place to take a man who has both canoe lust and cash (or credit card). Lots of interesting speakers on various aspects of canoeing and kayaking and natural world. Check the Rutabaga website for details and schedule.

Good on you Thin Air. Summer classes can really put a damper on things. I hope you get to do all of the backpacking your heart desires. Have fun.

Hey you know your in need of a good backcountry trip, when you stay up late at night, looking up trip reports and printing them. Just so you have something intersting to read during lectures. Or when you show all you coworkers at the gas station your maps and where your headed. They all think I'm an obsessed nut.. I am! I don't think its that bad. My girlfriend thinks its cute.;)

RE: No Summer School WOOOHOOO!!!!
Hey Thin Air, have a great summer, but don't forget about the folks who teach those summer classes. This will be only the second summer in seven years that I am turning down a summer school appointment. If I teach straight through the seasons again I'll go nuts. My idea of term breaks has been getting the grading done from the last one before the next starts. THIS SUMMER I AM GOING OUTDOORS! My canoe made it in the water only once all last season. If you saw where I live you'd agree that is ludicrous. So for those of you in the Upper Great Lakes area, I hope I see you on a trail or river between May 18 (last day of classes!) and the middle of next August when fall term prep begins. Sights are set on Isle Royale as a grand finale, with nearby Ice Age Trail sections as appetizers, and the Porkies in there somewhere. Time to walk again.

You don't have to WORK? Are you a trust fund baby or something? I always thought summers for college students were for earning tuition money. To bad I wasn?t born rich instead of so good looking.

I still have to work, but I have a set schedule with 3 days off in a row every week. That gives me a chance to hike a bit. Also I'm moving this summer and when I quit my current job, I'll give it a couple of weeks to hike a section of the PCT. then move. I aint no rich boy, but I live thrifty.
