Science Questions
Well, it's happened again this year. The mercury column in both my house thermometer and my zipper pull thermometer has separated. There is a 1/16" space in the column, with another 1/8" or so of mercury above it. Is the actual temperature at the very top of the short column, or do I subtract the space to figure actual temperature? Or, do I assume the thermometers are totally unreliable and buy new ones?

And, out of curiousity, does cold affect magnetism? My fire red light is one of those bubble lights that sits on top of the car with a big magnet, and it always seems to have less adhesion in the winter, even when there's no snow or ice around it.

Lastly, two philosophical questions with no real answer.

One: Do you think, that if there had been no flying life forms on earth (like birds, bats, and bugs) to imitate, that mankind would still have had its enduring fascination with flight, would have even conceived of the possibility, and would be where it is now in the air and space?

Two: People always wonder what the meaning of the "number of the beast is 666" means in revalations. Given the fact that Roman numerals were probably in use at the time, 666 would be DCLXVI, the symbols for 500, 100, 50, 10, 5, and 1 in descending order. What significance do you think that might have? Just curious.

Answering all 3 questions thus far:

Steiny:

1) Yes
2) Proves the Romans were a "bestial" civilization (i.e. in service of the beast).
Freedon:
3) Carefully

Oh crap I must confess to having a serious answer... they rig the ship assemply with strings so it expands inside the bottle.

RE: Science Questions
The thermometer is screwed, but possib;y can be fixed. Hold the top of it (witout the mercury bulb) firmly and swing your arm down as hard as you can in an arc. Try to use the centripital force to remerge the column.

RE: Science Questions
Too many questions for one thread.

In theory the magnet should work better in the cold, as heat will excite and jumble the molecules. Thus cold will keep them alined. So much for theory.

I think the study of spears and arrows and paper airplanes would have gotten us to where we are today. Maybe not as fast. But what a loss, to never sit on a beach and watch the gulls glide by.

Is Revalations really be a science question?
I think the 666 would have been written in Hebrew, not Roman #'s.

Are we *sure* the number of the beast isn't 999? History has botched more than one translation, you know.

RE: Science Questions
Solution to mercury problem: if you can take the thermometer inside and put it in hot water that should drive the mercury upward till the two separations meet..then plunge in cold water.

Hell it always worked for me !

I see six "0's" and three sets of "5's and 1's" and 5+1=6. Ironic, maybe!!

Get a new thermometer!!

Do magnets last forever? Have you magnetized you roof maybe in the one spot?

Beware of the boiling to cold trick. Good way to break glass.
I would think our ancestors experiences with falling and jumping would have given them the idea of flight.

Buuut...if the zeros mean anything, add those up.
5+1=6
5+1=6
5+1=6
and six zeros

that's four sixes.

6666. Did they drop one by mistake?

RE: Science Questions
What I also see in the Romans numeral is that not counting the M=1000 that the Romans rarely or never used, all the others add up to the number of the beast. And if you look hard at those numbers DCLXVI you will see 4 out of 5 letters needed to spell his name.

RE: Science Questions
Regarding the magnet: Have you conducted an experiment to verify that the breakaway force is different. If not, then I continue to wait for experimental data.

One explanation of 666: Each 6 is one less than 7. Seven is sometimes considered the the symbol or number of "completion" in Bible prophecy. So, the beast (Satanic) is always short of being "God".

I always thought that 666 stood for "Kissinger":

Let:
A=6
B=12
C=18, etc.

Then:

K = 66
I = 54
S = 114
S = 114
I = 54
N = 84
G = 42
E = 30
R = 108

Total = 666
(Anyway, it seem like a good idea 30 years ago)

RE: Science Questions
It could be a geometry/stiffness difference in the roof of your car when it is cold instead of a problem with the magnet.

Cold results in contraction causing a slight contour change in the top of your car. This may cause the magnet to seem to peel off easier.

Hillary? What does she know about science? Hopefully, she will be reelected many times! That way......

RE: Science Questions
Briar.... You said, regarding the beast "if you look hard at those numbers DCLXVI you will see 4 out of 5 letters needed to spell his name."

I saw 4 of the six letters in Clinton (CLNI, but no "T" or "O") so I thought you were referring to "Clinton." I figured you meant 4 of 6 not 4 of 5. My mistake I suppose. Since you said "his name" that would mean Bill, not Hilary, was yer anti-christ. You see the N when you look at XV and ignore one line in the "X". Seeing a "T" would be a stretch.

If not Clinton, what name were you thinking of?
PedXing

RE: Science Questions
In SENATOR you find 4 of 5 for SATAN, but you could count the A twice, as they would at UofMich and try to find a use for EOR, which forms ORE or ROE, so maybe using metal is bad, or there's a connection to the decline in Russian caviar production, which leads to the Army of the East or North thingy in Revelations.

But that still leaves 99 other suspects besides Hillary, though Hillary has 3 of 4 for He!!, but so does Helms.

Not to mention that Hillary is considered very magnetic by some, which addresses the roof light problem. Bill can tell you if she lost some of her attraction on cold winter nights.

And without birds, would humans have ever learned to flip one at each other, causing innumerable fights which led to wars?

1. Buy a new thermometer...or compare it to another thermometer in order to figure out where it correct temp is!

2. Batteries don't work as well when they're very cold, however, electrons will flow without resistance in absolute zero...so who knows?

3. Of course...ever eat acid? No seriously...have you ever wondered how birds, butterflies and bats all can fly even though their flight engineering is so vastly different? I just did!

4. If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now...it's just a spring clean for the May Queen!

RE: Science Questions
1) Thermometers don't remain accurate forever. The cheap ones never are.

2) There may not be snow or ice on your roof but there is probably frost or condensation.

3) Goddard was not imitating birds with his rocket experiments, and Da Vinci's helicopter is not bird like at all. So yes, we would develop the desire for flight anyway.

4) Revelations is a retelling of the Isaiah prophecies. Review the prophetic books of the Old Testament for more details on the antichrist. 666 is symbolic and allegorical.

Revelations is not a foretelling of a future apocalyptic event. It is a description of the choice between good and evil every one of us makes every day in our own lives.

Evan Bayh is probably going to run with Hiliary for president, and he is from Indiana. He is nothing but a pretty boy who managed to take enough of the hoosier vote because he is "Handsome." I'm just apologizing in adavnace in the unfortunate case of him winning.

The beast may well be Alan Iverson... well-marked, tatooed and foul-mouthed.....as foretold by the prophet Isaiah Thomas.

Armeggedon was a gas of a movie, though quite unbelievable and Aerosmith's music still sucks after all these years.

Cruella DeVil...now there was an evil butch if ever there was one.

If yer lookin' fer some kinda antichrist, I'd keep an eye on Jerry Falwell.

Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Baker, and Jesse Jackson.....they do much more than lay people.

THe only good thing is that now the peopole who voted him in are getting pissed because he is do things that in the interest of the people, but nobody is for. He was considered for Gore's running mate, and now he's trying to make name in the Democratic Party. I have even heard rumors in the news.

Christopher Hitchins makes the case against Kissinger in the previous and current Harper's. You gotta be a piece of work to need a 2-parter in Harper's to cover your sins.

And if I read the emoticon listings right in another thread, isn't 666 just three squirrels laying together? Do I have to worry the next time three squirrels show up in my back yard that the Devil's work is at hand? Aren't there squirrels in the woods where we like to hike?

And does that mean that Kleetn is doing the Devil's work?
