Looking for drop horns “The deer have started to lose their antlers and it is time to get into the woods for a drop horn search. Any of you search for drops. Its kinda fun and a good excuse to walk the woods.” 12:40:28 PM 2/19/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “i've got a gorgeous four point antler that was a drop. found it in an ex boy friend's garage tho.” 2:28:31 PM 2/19/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “LoL, They are fun to find and even better if you find the mate. Eastern Oregon you can find a ton but they are bleached out. I haven't looked in garage, maybe I should.” 2:40:55 PM 2/19/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “It's always good medicine to be gifted a antler, feather or anything like that while in the woods. Don't forget to say thanks to "The CREATOR" AHO Mitakuye-Oyasin (All My Realtions)” 3:12:26 PM 2/19/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “Most of the time they get left where they lay. On occasion I bring an exceptional one home. The Creator always gets my thanks, my thanks for one good trail to walk.” 3:52:21 PM 2/19/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “I snowshoe in the woods behind my house, following the deer trails and I'm hoping to find a shed antler. I'd really like to be up north when the moose drop theirs!” 11:53:39 AM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “Call me picky but deer, elk and moose do NOT have horns. They have antlers (as you used in the first line). Horns is not a synonym for antlers, there is a big difference.” 11:58:48 AM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “Antlers are branched, horns aren't - but if you're hunting in the woods of Maine with no doe permit, you're lookin' for horns - no matter what the dictionary says.” 12:13:08 PM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “Hey now don't take too many because us little critters like to gnawl on those things. They are a valuable source of minerals and vitamins. Nibble, Nibble!! I have to agree with Lost, I didn't want to chime in earlier because I figured some one would eventually. Now a agruement could be made in the case of the antelope. They have horns if I'm not mistaken, but also some branching more akin to spurs.” 12:25:30 PM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “hey lost, the definition of horn is: "a hard, bone-like permanent projection on the heads of certain hoofed animals, as cattle, sheep, or deer, the two antlers of the deer which are shed annually." did you know that elk antlers are ivory?” 12:28:49 PM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “LOL Briar, that is true, but a shed antler is hard to find. I'd like to find one before it gets nibbled on!” 12:33:14 PM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “Ya, I know the popular use for ?horn? would include ?antlers?. But I object to that use. The structure and method of growth of horns like on cows or bison is totally different than that of antlers. Antlers are horns like fingernails are hair. Dictionaries record the popular use of words not necessarily the correct use. An example is the words ?concrete? and ?cement?. Cement is any of many forms of glue. Concrete is made of Portland cement, water, sand and rocks. Your driveway is not ?cement?, it is concrete. If you ask for cement from someone in the industry you will get a fine gray powder not the stuff sidewalks are made of. The first definition in the dictionary at my desk for ?cement? describes mortar. Popular use is not always the correct use. So call me picky, I am. BTW the American pronghorn is not an antelope.” 1:02:12 PM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but pictures... and pig skulls.” 1:50:51 PM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “Pronghorn are a cousin of the mountain goat. They are also the worlds fastest runner beyond a sprint.” 2:01:32 PM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “Ah, but what of the elk? Their antlers are not of the same stuff fingernails are.” 2:22:17 PM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “Mebbe not, joy - but ivory?! Are you totally INSANE!” 2:29:56 PM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “...How 'bout those horn arches in the square of Jackson, WY!” 2:31:42 PM 2/20/01 RE: Looking for drop horns “Sorry, horns is just easier to say and type. I also believe that the "antlers" should be left and I do for the most part. It is also unnerving for the critters that lose them because a human spends to much time in their wintering grounds and may push them into less habital area's. It is much nicer to take the antlers from the ground than taking them from their skull. Although I do hunt for venison. That ought to open up a can of worms, maybe I can go fishing with them.” 2:45:49 PM 2/21/01
