Day Packs
I need a new day pack. Any suggestions? I've been looking at The North Face and Columbia, so far.

I saw an ad for a Jansport Tree Frog and it looked WAY cool. Anyone see one of these? I have no idea what they cost.

I can't afford one if I'm going to fly out to Fiery Gizzard. ;o)

RE: Day Packs
Campmor's website has two versions of the Jansport Frog day packs. The larger $99 one looks interesting - has a framesheet and a reservoir pocket among other features. There's a smaller one for $69 I think. You know what they say, "they're small, have several." The motto of gear addicts and dim sum eaters.

I have a Lowe Contour 30 that has served itself well for the last couple or three years and it's showing no signs of ever being used. I don't forsee having to get a new one for a long time.

Why do you hate day hikes, walkindude?

RE: Day Packs
It's like being teased with being in the outdoors. I like to be out at least 3 days. I only Backpack. Very seldom do I ever day hike or just do one nighters.

RE: Day Packs
Well I think it depends on how much you want to carry with you and of course the weather.
When it is warm and sunny the best thing i found was a fisherman's vest ! It has loads of neat pockets and can easily carry water and snacks and it wont kill your back and it is not hot.

I also have a day pack that i use for the colder weather when you need to be switching clothes back and forth. I dont have a preference for any brand name cuz I think most are about the same.

RE: Day Packs
I like a pack with a slightly padded waist belt if the pack is going to be over 2000 cu. in. Lots of options out there. The Day Packs that TNF is putting out now are cheapo foriegn models.

I saw some deals on the "mountainsmith yoho" which is one to consider.

So many others are a better choice than TNF.

RE: Day Packs
i look at it like this:

day hikes and overnighters are blessings, especially during a busy weekend.

i'm working saturday, but i'm hiking all day sunday.

RE: Day Packs
Consider what all you need to carry before you decide on what to look for (see PA Hiker's post and also Didjfan's). I personally have found myself continually increasing the weight of the "stuff" I carry on a long day-hike, but that's due to the varied terrain, and the fact that I often carry extra gear for scouts / younger family members / unexpected weather conditions, etc. Recently went to a Kelty Moraine (which I'm sure many would consider a backpack, not a daypack), because I wanted better support to carry that amount of weight. (1) Do a thorough analysis of your needs, (2) then decide on the capacity you will need, (3) THEN look at the various packs in that category.
