Anyone use a LED headlamp ?
I saw a couple at Campmor and was wondering if the 3 led lightbulb conversion is bright enough for regular camp chores.

RE: Anyone use a LED headlamp ?
I have the CMG Infinity. I've only used it a little bit, but I like it. It's about half the size of a mini mag. I also bought a silly little nylon head strap with little elastic loops for small flashlights. I have used that with the CMG, as well as a mini mag. Nice for hands free light. The LED is perfectly good for hiking at night. It provides enough light to see the trail ahead of you without blinding you and lighting everything up. the CMG comes in a couple different colors too, so apparantly the different colored lights are better for different uses (contrast, night vision, etc.) Overall, thumbs up from me.

The LED lights are plenty bright enough for camp chores. The max illumination is about 50 feet.

A 2A maglight with an incandescent bulb will shine up to 150 feet.

RE: Anyone use a LED headlamp ?
I agree with Radagast, the Petzl Tikka is a truly fantastic headlamp that is a lot brighter than my old cheapo. More than enough light for reading, camp chores, hiking, climbing and skiing. There are other brands that are more complicated, heavier and more expensive that you might feel are more useful, but the light weight and low cost made me choose the Petzl. As I see it, the main advantage to LED's are battery life - the reviewer in Backpacker Magazine said that he left one on for two weeks steady and it still gave him enough light to read by.

BTW, does anyone know if lithium batteries are available in AAA and if they could be used in the Tikka?

gremlin,

i emailed petzl and they said that you CAN use lithium batteries in it, but i can't find any. i just use those new super-ultra-titanium-whatever energizers.

I use a Princeton Tec Matrix when on serious outings. With lithium batteries of course picked up at either Radio Shack or Wal Greens.

Last August
10 days on the trail one set of lithium batteries.

Thanks, Rad. Mozark, I guess I'll try Radio Shack. Happy trails.
