Hiking GA in June
I have finally came to a conclusion on my Springtime solo hike.
I am going to start at Springer and hike into NC.
Plan on meeting up the ECT'ers on June 1st for the ECT Blood Mtn trip.
Can someone that has hiked this area give me a general time frame and any tips on places to resupply.
Another favor..can someone hold my husband down while I tell him of my plans?? LOL

RE: Hiking GA in June
Here is a description of the AT through there:
up up up up up down down down up up up up down down 15 feet of flat up up up down down down down down up up up up up up.
Get the idea?
It's a VERY FUN trail!!!

RE: Hiking GA in June
An appreciable percentage of AT "thruhikers" never make the NC state line. GA is arguably the toughest stretch of the trail - especially if one has yet to build-up their stamina.

But hey, EG - YOU CAN DO IT, GIRL!

RE: Hiking GA in June
Buy yourself a Data book and that's all you need unless you just want the Ga map.
Don't try to kill yourself by doing long miles per day. It is a tough section. I'm a pretty strong hiker and I wouldn't plan for more than 10 miles a day to start off. If you start on Springer and avoid the Approach trail I believe it'll be easier on your confidence. I bet the approach trail alone has detoured Many people.

RE: Hiking GA in June
I happen to live in the area, and know some parts of it quite well. The approach trail to Springer is surprisingly tough. There are several stretches of steep trail - the descent from Blood Mountain into Neels Gap is steep, as is the short but VERY steep climb out of Hogpen Gap. The drop into Low Gap is pretty tough on the knees as well.

Lots of places to resupply, IF you want to make longish side trips. Walasi-Ya center at Neels Gap is an obvious spot. You will cross pavement on the Richard Russel Scenic Highway, but you are a ways from anything there, even by road. An old logging road descends into the Choestoe community out of Low Gap, and there is a store down that way (Alexander's) maybe 7 miles off the trail - finding the road can be tough from the Low Gap shelter, as the upper end is very overgrown. At Chattahoochee Gap you can take the Jack's Knob trail to the top of Brasstown Bald Mountain, but there are only vending machines there....my advice is to stock up at Springer and at Walasi-ya. Another place is Woody Gap, if you want to make a 3 mile side-trip into the tiny community of Suches.
