New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “I've added quite a few shots to my photopoint website for anyone who's interested. 12:01:01 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Hobbit, did you take all those pics? They're AMAZING!!!” 12:05:21 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Photography is the reason I go backpacking. It's not how I make my living, but it IS how I keep my job from driving me to drink. I've considered photography as a career, but then it wouldn't be any fun anymore, would it? 12:11:54 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “What can I say? Wow! :-)” 12:17:04 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “BEAUTIFUL shots man!!!!!” 1:18:38 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Hobbit, those are amazing. My jaw hung the whole time I was going through your pictures. May I use one of them for my computer desktop?” 1:46:12 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Love those pics from Escalante. I gotta go out west this year!” 4:46:09 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Hobbit, Those are GREAT pics! I grew up and lived (until 6 years ago) about 40 minutes from Watkins Glen. Your pictures are some of the best I have ever seen from there. What type of photo equipment do you carry when you are backpacking? I realize there is more too it then the equipment, but these had to have been taken with something more then a point & shoot camera.” 6:11:29 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Some of them were taken with a Pentax IQzoom 90, some of them were taken with a disposable, and some with a Mamiya 645, and RB67. However the majority were taken with a Nikon F5. The disposable was used for the underwater shots. This one is my favorite of those Oldie, If you wanna use one for your desktop, let me know which one and what size you want it, and I'll email you a decent image with some resolution to it. These uploads are skimpy.” 8:19:03 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Damn...those are some AWESOME photos!” 8:32:26 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Yeah that snorkling picture is great. I kept seeing it in the thumbnail size as I paged down through the album and couldn't figure out what the heck it was until I brought it up to full size. It has great "oil on water" fluid color. Hobbit what film(s) are you using when shooting with the F5?” 8:37:15 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “For portraiture and shots where my primary subject is people, I use FUJI Astia 100 ISO for transparencies, and Kodak Portra 160 VC for prints. Both of those films render excellent skin tones and good color saturation. For landscapes, scenics and such, I use mostly FUJI Velvia, rated at 40 ISO. (they rate it at 50, but I always compensate minus one third of a stop with Velvia for a little richer color.) Another film that I use a lot is FUJI Provia 100F, and FUJI Provia 400F. They are both extremely fine grained, with very good color saturation. P.S., Stay away from Velvia if you are including close-ups of people in your pictures. It blows skin tones away.” 8:44:56 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Hobbit, where did you learn photography? I am interested in learning photography myself for the trail after I had some humbling experiences with a 'point-n-click'. Did you pick it up in a book, school, courses or what? Let us in on your secret!!!!” 9:59:22 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Outstanding Hobbit..” 11:26:09 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Thanks for the kind words. As for learning photography, It's just been a topic that has interested me most of my life. When something interests you, you read about it and learn all you can about it from many different sources. As far as any secret, the most important rule is: "Be There". If you're not there when the storm is breaking, or the lighting is terrific, or the sunset is spectacular, then you can't capture it on film.” 11:49:33 AM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Hobbit, hobbit....... you've been a busy boy! So, could we get some captions on some of those shots to see where they were taken? Since I am so entralled with the Southwest, I'm really wondering where the arch/alcove-type shot was taken -- image 0006. I love your forest landscapes, however, I think they might be getting a teeny-tiny bit on the dark side. Maybe it's the scanning, or were you shooting Velvia underrated on 0021, 26 and 27? By the same token, I'm very impressed with either the film and/or the scanning holding details in the shadows and blacks on the Watkins Glen photos. Is 0088 also at Watkins Glen? What lens did you use? (Betting telephoto here....now watch me be WRONG!!! lol) And I see you're getting into the "working (and still) agriculture" shots. Good deal. There is freelancer in my area who uses ag shots as his bread and butter. He does a great job too. (well he's a pro; he better. However, put him in a situation where you have to light an object and he calls in his studio photog friends..hehehehee) Go here if you'd like to see some of his ag shots..... and he's sold a bunch! It's fun for me to go through these, cuz I have a good idea where some of them were shot. http://www.larshbristol.com/photo.html” 12:10:39 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “SUPER SHOTS!! Webshots got nothing on you Hobbit!” 1:36:23 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “very cool pics,” 2:17:46 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “a href="http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1465610&a=11774941">check this out” 3:50:50 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) 3:52:45 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) 3:57:38 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “IT WORKED!!!! Looks like a wonderful place to spend some time.” 4:43:03 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “I thought you might appreciate those shots. Most of them were from Guadaloupe Mountains in Texas.” 4:48:36 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “walkindude, email me please. 4:49:56 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Hobbit you earn 15 points for great pics and a bonus of 5 for sharing. Good work!” 6:16:32 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Yo Hobbit You got mail.” 7:08:49 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Yo dude, so do you.” 7:15:19 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Thanks Hobbit, for offering to resize your pictures for my desktop, but I change desk top every so often. No need for you to go through the work for me. Thanks for offering and allowing though.” 7:25:34 PM 2/25/01 RE: New Scenics on Photopoint (Hobbit's) “Hobbit - great pics!
