Saw Arlo and his daughter w/ some back up folky "Pink Floyd" sounding band back at the start of the month. It was good to see and hear the legend because I thought he was dead. And the funny thing was he thought he was dead too. "I don't want a pickle just wanna ride on my ........."

I saw Metallica with Ozzy back in the 80's. Good show! I think the last one I went to was Alan Jackson with my wife 4-5 years ago. Man, I used to go to alot of concerts, back when they were a little more affordable. Ozzy/Metallica tickets were $9 (I think) at the Broome County Arena in Binghampton, NY.

RE: Concerts.
Yeah, the only big name concerts I've seen are ZZ Top a couple years ago and New Kids on the Block - WHEN I WAS 12 - I only saw them because the Beach Boys canceled.

Went to a jazz bar in St. Paul over the weekend. Small funky place, good tunes. Also saw the U of M brass choir, concert choir, and chamber choir at the St. Paul Cathedral this afternoon - beautiful.

Small local stuff like that is more appealing to me than the huge facimilie national concerts.

Last concert I saw was Jess Klein, an up and coming musician. I used to be able to see her and her band in a small bar. When she starts selling 50 dollar tickets I'll stop going.

I avoid the big time hyped concerts... way over priced... good seats are next to impossible to get.

The local bands, or the undiscovered musicians, you can often see up close for cheap. You can often eat a decent meal too.

Someone like Lynn Miles, from Ottawa is as talented as anyone you see on a big hyped tour will play without her band for cheap and you can watch her from 10 feet away. Last time I saw her I hollered a request, thanked her personally for playing it afterwards and she talked to me about the song and said it was her mothers favorite. Check her reviews on amazon.com (especially for "Slightly Haunted").

RE: Concerts.
I saw Cheryl Wheeler and Lucy Kaplankis("Cry Cry Cry" w/Richard Shindell) a few months ago...

Other than that, it's just been small, local stuff. I agree with Ped about the local scene...the local musicians can be a blast, especially when you get to meet and talk with them.

My friend owns a security business and, years ago, I used to pick and choose concerts to go to and get back stage...I met some really cool people, but also some that turned out to be real a$$holes.

Dunk...Leftover is awesome. Been to a bunch of their shows, but haven't seen them since they changed their lineup!

The Claypool concert was da bomb. They started out the show with the Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonley Hearts Club Band except singing "Sgt. Claypool's flying Frog Brigade", and sequed into "Get High With A Little Help From My Friends". My highlight of the night was when they did Pink Floyd "Pigs". Couldn't get into the next band (Galactic) after the Brigade's performance.

RE: Concerts.
Cheryl Wheeleer, Lucy Kaplansky, Richard Shindell, "Cry, cry, cry" are all good examples of touring musicians (or groups, like cry cry cry) that are excellent, usually don't cost much money to see and need the money (and thus can't afford to be arrogant). They really do tour for the love of the music and performing and are thrilled to have "regulars" who come by to see them when they are in town.

RE: Concerts.
Finally made the drive south to Summerfest in Milwaukee last summer. My wife wanted to see Veruca Salt (Chicagoland alt-rockers) and I just made it in time for Shannon Curfman (Fargo, N.D., teen blues/rock sensation). I must say, for a swirling mob of beer drenched folks, Summerfest wasn't unmanageable. But I've given up on big name shows in the big city. It's a long expensive trip from the hinterlands.

High points from the past? Seeing the Jethro Tull "Aqualung" show (before the album was released) as the first concert of freshman year at Michigan State. Seeing Iggy go nuts at an outdoor rock fest in 1969. Seeing opening night of Steve Miller's "Joker" tour at Winterland. Plus two-and-a-half years as an entertainment editor getting to go to all shows at the local college and hockey arena for free.

Buddur and Dunk - Yes Leftover is great. I've seen them many times and will see them again in a couple of weeks, also Bluegrass Underground and Ekoostic Hookah. Other bands I've seen recently, Widespread Panic and Dark star Orchestra. It's been a couple years since Ive seen Moe, but they also rock, same with Phish. My girlfriend manages a large concert venue, so I see about a show a week, for FREE!

fffred, whaddya mean no one remembers?

Luckily, I didn't crash into the mountain. I went over the cliff.

Sandy, remember, you can get anything you want at Alice's restaurant, exceptin' Alice. ;-)

And my friends and I still joke about the Group W bench. Mother-rapers. Father-killers. Father-rapers!!

Last concert I saw. Hmm, probably something last summer at the Hollywood Bowl. Can't let a summer go by without seeing a show at the bowl. Except for hiking, of course, it's the most fun you can have outside with your clothes on.

Oh... actually, I have seen some small unsigned bands in club settings lately. My brother works for a record label and often knows really cool bands to check out. Great fun to see seriously rockin' live music in a small setting... but I guess I don't think of that as a "concert."

BEST concert I ever saw? That would have to Steely Dan at the Greek Theater (another outdoor venue in LA). Awesome!

I am so jealous of anyone who got to see Stevie Ray Vaughn. Never had the privilege. I have been fortunate enough to see John Lee Hooker (twice!) and man is he getting old but he just keeps on going...

I saw Jimmie and Stevie Ray (not together) at Antones ... in Austin Tx during the latter 1/2 of the 70s. I was prescient enough to think that each of the Vaughn's had bands almost as good as Thrills... another blues/rock band (which, however, went nowhere... but played a mean version of "The thrill is gone."

Humble Pie with Foghat opening, fall 1973, San Jose fair grounds. Nothing better than two English blues-based rock bands competing to show who's got the stuff. Now both Steve Marriot and Lonesome Dave are gone, so none of those elderly rock reunions for these bands.

On the complete other side of the spectrum, my first out-of-town date with my now wife was being broke, but using plastic, to take her to Milwaukee to see Laurie Anderson at the Riverside Theater in 1990 for her "Strange Angels" tour. Reino had introduced me to her records and the one-woman multi-media show just blew me away.

Frank Zappa twice, including the Overnight Sensation tour.

I was fortunate enough to see Stevie Ray Vaughn back in 84. Here's the crazy part..he was the opening act for....Huey Lewis & the News!!! I didn't know who SRV was really, but man, he blew the place away. I really regret never getting to see him again.

I'm like alot of you. I saw prabably 40 concerts from about 84 to 94, and since then about 10. Too expensive anymore.

Some of my highlights:

First show: The Tubes-1983
some favs:Elton John(2),
Bryan Adams, Van Halen(2), Triumph, U2, Jimmy Buffet(3), Paul McCartney(amazing show), Eagles (94 tour), Del Amitri.

Geez, photoboy, we must have similar tastes. Someone who saw The Tubes... I liked The Tubes (course you didn't say you liked them, just your first concert)

Well let's dig down memory lane here (before I get too old to remember):

Cheap Trick, Chicago, Boston, Beach Boys, Billy Joel (back in the good ole days, probably 79 or so), KISS (mmmmoooooohhahaahah), John COUGAR Mellencamp, Charlie Daniels, Steve Martin (King Tut days), Bruce Hornsby and the Range (twice), Jars of Clay, Gin Blossoms, George Clinton and P-Funk (the last four at the small college in my town... sometimes freebies), comedian Louis Anderson .........hmmmmmm... all I can think of for now.

I wanted to see The Eagles real bad on the LAST concert tour of their REAL life (first time around). My ex got a ticket to go with his friend around 80 or 81. HE DIDN'T EVEN LIKE THE EAGLES. All I got was the STINKIN' T-SHIRT!!! lol

Ben Harper (2), Gov't Mule (3),
String Cheese Incident (2),
Phish (4), The Other Ones, Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers, Ekoostik Hookah,
Neil Young,
BB King & Buddy Guy,
Iron Maiden, Rob Halford, Queensryche,

The Doors are one band I wish I'd seen too, never did. Was really too young to see them, the last time they played near where I grew up (Boston area).

Most of the best concerts I've seen were by people who weren't really big and never got that big. If I was proud of catching some people, I'd have to say it was seeing Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and seeing and meeting Jimmy Cliff in the the 70's when reggae was still pretty new to the USA. Of the 3, only Cliff (still alive) lived to see the 90s.
