Touting themselves as ECOLOGICAL minded is a great marketing aid. I am of the belief that they are glad to have one to get to the market with for the sole purpose of $$$$. They think, or know, that this is what the consumer is looking for in these times and they would not have pursued it for the sake of the environment. I'm not saying these vehicles are a bad idea.

No d'uh. A company in business to make $$$. The mission of a corporation is to maximize shareholders wealth. And why shouldn't they realize a profit. It is what motivates innovation in the market place. Doubt me? Ask John Galt

I'm with ya gojo, you too Fletch. That's exactly what I tell my Chevy and Ford die-hard family. Hehe, kinda puts a stomper on their "buy American or you're scum" attitude.

I think they're required to produce 2% alternative fuel vehicles under a federal mandate. I don't they'd be taking any steps to improve fuel efficiency if they didn't have to. Don't fool yourself. The vast majority of the American public could give a rats ass about the environment. This is apparent by the fact that Stupid Ugly Vehicles have been the number one seller for the past decade.

I agree with you flyguy6x, I'm tired of hearing people complain how companies are out for $$$$. Well yeah, but YOU have the power to direct where your $$$$s go. Thats what brings about lighter Backpacking gear and the Honda Insight. Every time a company sees the market shift due to the consumers concerns, they will change to meet needs. The other option is to fail and die out.

OHMIGAWD!
Hondas are made in Ohiya?!

I SURE HOPE the UAW dosen't get their grubby lil' hands on the Tundra before I buy one in *about* 2004! (I figure my Tacoma will have about 350k miles by then, and I'll be ready for a new rig).

The Insight is made in Japan. The Maryville, OH plant makes some of the Accords. You can find Japanese-made Accords on most dealers' lots though. Most other Hondas are made in Japan. The Odyssey, however, is made by our friends up north, in Canada.

I own a Honda Prelude and it's the best dammed car, by far, that I've owned. The Japanese philosophy is to build for quality, not short term profit. I would never buy sh!tty American-engineered cars. U.S. automakers don't give a damn about quality and never paid attention to quality control until they were forced to in the 1980s when the Japanese started taking large U.S. market share.

I'll take a twin turbo V8 any day over an eco-car.

The only good thing about an eco-car is the flat torque curve of the electric car, but until they get battery life up, I'll stick to my good old standard engine.

Them Japs are some engineering mofos!

Their navy kicked the sh!t out of a much larger fleet of Ruskies in the early 1900s. And come WWII, they had the baddest fleet afloat. But mostly, it was their tactics - smart lil' fackers! It's a DAMNED GOOD thing they didn't have the resources to build any more capital ships after the start of the war - else we'd all be speaking German with a Jap accent.

Midway was SHEER LUCK!
GOD BLESS AMERICA!

I'm glad they're on our side, now.

Aren't they getting heavily into the NASA stuff? Bout time...

I bet they could build a better jet fighter than the F-22, too.

Their ship building tech is also tops in the world (still).

I don't have the least bit of a problem with buying Jap trucks... my dad had to kill many a brave Jap pilot (and see many a brave American sailor die) to secure my liberty to buy WHATEVER I want! Hey, if a Toyota Tacoma is good enuff for my 'ol dad, it's good enuff for me!

GOD BLESS AMERICA!
(can't say that too much)

Well I'm really incorrect, I have a Dodge Diesel 1 ton dually. I do need it for my work. Even if I did'nt I'd still have it, it's comfortable to drive, lots of room for kids an dogs an has been very dependable. It also gets 20 to the gallon when I'm not pulling. I beat the heck out of it! It's got 100+ miles on it in 2 yr's an they were hard miles.

Two engines in -100k miles.

He currently has a 3/4 ton Chevy. -75k, and problems (electronic) already.

Hey, cb, mebbe they'll come out with a Tundra dually soon!

RE: The naturalist at Honda, and what they just m
Now where do you suppose the electricity comes from to recharge your batteries? Nope, we haven't been able to harness lightening yet, so my guess would be either fossil fuel, hydro-electric, solar, wind or nuclear power.

So is it better for the environment to burn gasoline and diesel in our vehicles or to damn our rivers, build more coal/oil/gas burning power plants, or build more nukes.

Wind and solar are not the answers yet. Too expensive and inefficient. Besides, the windmills are the not the prettiest to look at and they're damn noisey too. Have you ever listened to a windmill farm? Whump, Whump, Whump. It's freaking noise pollution.

RE: The naturalist at Honda, and what they just m
The Insight does not run purely on electricity. It normally runs off its 70 hp gas engine. When more hp is needed, a secondary electric motor kicks in, greatly increasing the mileage. The batteries are maintanance-free. They never need re-charging. They are charged through re-generative engine braking. a friend of mine that has one averages 82 mpg on the hiway. And the car is actually quite snappy. I thought it would be pretty slow, but the power to weight ratio is perfect, making for surprisingly quick accelaration. And it cruises very comfortabley at 80 mph.
