“Burnt Toast, Isle Royale is great. A perfect example of the Northwoods. I have been 4 times. What is your route? If you can check out Moskey Basin, its got nice shallows for swimmin and avoid East Chickenbone like the plague.”

“Burnt, been to I.R. twice, both times after Labor Day, each for a week. First time was basically a figure-eight from Rock Harbor (East Chickenbone wasn't THAT bad) and second time was Windego to Rock Harbor via the Greenstone Ridge Trail. Both fantastic trips. Planning to go back this August after getting up to speed. Some of the trails are rough, but the guidebook, Isle Royale Hiking and Water Trails (?) by Jim DuFresne, and one called Hiking Michigan give pretty good advice on the general difficulty. Just remember it's in the middle of Lake Superior; weather is very changeable and can be chilly even in summer, especially at night. I.R. should be on any backpacker's list of "To Do."”
