Very Impressive
It's been a while since I posted but I've been lurking off and on. Been spending more time outside and less time in front of the computer. I don't usually like to endorse or recommend a product but I am so impressed with my new shell I just had to say something. Last winter I bought a TNF Mountain Light Parka and wore it all winter. It was acceptable but nothing to rave about. This year I bought a Marmot LightSpeed Shell and I can't say enough. The fit is far superior to the TNF and the GoreTex ECR kicks butt over TNF's. I have been cought out in the rain several times this winter and haven't been wet yet. If anybody is looking for a light weight shell take a look at the LightSpeed. I think you'll be impressed also.
Ok I'll get off of the soup box.

It'll be a while till I need a new shell...and I can't wait till I need a new one so I can try out one of the newer and more breathable fabrics.

Washed my shells (pants and coat) yesterday and just got done Nikwax Waterproofing 'em.

RE: Very Impressive
I bought the LightSpeed at a local outfitter on sale for $299. I've seen it on sale for as low as $269.

sirpeteofmillwork;
The Alpinest is an awesome shell but I wanted something a little lighter.

Marmot's Gore-tex better then TNF's? I thought Gore-Tex was Gore-tex.

How 'bout Solstice? I've had a Three Peaks with Microshed (proprietary comparible to GTex)and think it's the bomb. msrp is about $225.

TNF and Patagonia is glam-gear for mallrats!

RE: Very Impressive
Check out Mountain Hardwear before you buy anything. I have always been impressed with the quality and at 2/3 the price of TNF equivalent.

Mountain Hardware 2/3 price of TNF? The last time I checked, the Mountain Light jacket was $300 and the Mountain Hardware jacket wa $400.

RE: Very Impressive
My buddy has a TNF Mountain Light and it's a good jacket. It's too short for my tastes and it's 2 ply GTX. As Bommer has discovered, the difference between 2 ply and 3 ply is like night and day. I haven't tried any of the newer GTX's yet, but if they're even more breathable the classic 3 ply, they must really be something. Marmot makes gorgeous parkas, two of my colleagues have them. Mine is a Sierra Designs, about 100$ cheaper than Marmort & TNF; 150$ cheaper than Mountain Hardware (Good ol' IMAX marketing) and Arc'teryx are a hellish 200$ more, but they are to drooooool over. Anyway, that's up here in Canada. Happy trails and enjoy your new jacket, Boomer.

RE: Very Impressive
I appreciate the posts on a good colder weather jacket. Been looking at the reviews of various styles, and tried on a new TNF Mtn. Light. I thought that it was a bit long for my tastes, but it seemed it could hardly be warm enough to justify its price. Still, worn with other layers, I'm sure it would be fine in all but the most frigid of conditions...right?

For now, I recently picked up the Marmot PreCip. At 13 ounces, I wanted something lightweight and effective, and have been reading posts which almost all speak to it's comfort, effectiveness, W/B quality and so forth. Thanks to my REI Dividend, I thought this was the time to buy. Kinda wish it had a couple of pockets, but for what it is intended for, and how I'll be using it, I can't complain.

DM99, been a while since I shopped, you may be right. My MH down jacket was 2/3 TNF equivalent as were Nutshell and Ethereal raingear. As I said, check it out, I'm not making an unqualified endorsement based on price.

But then again the gear is about five years old, heavily used and still works/looks almost new.

Whoa! Boomer! Last year you bought a TNF shell and this year you bought a Marmot? You are either really tough on gear or you have way too much money to spend on gear! Wanna marry me? ;-D

I still say the frogg toggs are the way to go. I stood in the shower with mine and not a leak anywhere. no sweeting in them, cheep,(65 dollars for the pants and jacket) cool colors. and only 14 oz for both pants and jacket. I have been waring mine now all winter and love it. for the money you spend on one jacket i can buy pants and jacket 4 times .

RE: Very Impressive
I don't want everyone to think the Marmot LightSpeed is the only decent Shell, just a good one that's been good to me. The 3 layer GoreTex XCR is very superior to the 2 layer.
Pamster, the TNF is still in good shape but I had some extra cash and decided to go for the Marmot. Although marrying you is an interesting thought, I think I'm waaay too old for you.

One more comment. Another reason I chose Marmot is because it is a local company and I like to support the local folks as much as possible.
