EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!!View MessagesEMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “I just experienced a 6.2 earthquake in WA. Should I leave my home because of aftershocks? Help!!!!” 2:23:57 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Hell yeah...bring some warm cloths and all yer $$$.” 2:26:38 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “I'm going to pack up my parrot and leave, thanks Buddur.” 2:27:17 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Expect lots of after shocks!” 2:27:51 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “In a shaker place 2 oz gin 1/4 oz vermouth place lid on top then stand very still.” 2:29:45 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Hope you guys are OK up there. Seems like not much damage though. A good time to get that tent out tonight LH. Good luck up there and keep us up to date!” 2:32:39 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “How old is your house? If less than 20 years old and was inspected during construction you should be OK. Check you natural gas lines. If you have a masonry chimney check it out too. If the house is on the foundation and all the doors and windows still open and close, you should be OK. A wood frame house is very resilient. Do not panic ignore buddar, he is Ohio, real earthquake country. I make my living in building and construction safety. Your home was probably built for those loads. Buddar that comment is irresponsible.” 2:33:52 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Better safe than sorry, sometimes the first few are warnings for the real thing yet to come!” 2:35:49 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Outdoors is NOT always safer than indoors. Your big risk is being hit by falling objects. That happens outside as much or more the inside. Definitely more than inside a sound building.” 2:38:39 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “They are saying it was more like a 6.4 quake and about 30 mi. south of Seattle. I felt it down here in Salt Lake.” 2:42:13 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “The last two people in Idaho killed in a earthquake were outside.” 2:43:27 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Lost in Idaho, my building is way over 20 years old. It's a four story, and I live on the 4th floor. Griz, camping, that's a good idea, lol.” 2:44:07 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Yeah sure Mr.Idaho... whatever you say. You realize that by the time the earthquake happened, lipstick posted the event, I saw the post and replied that it was waaaay too late for appropriate action. I did! Not everybody has your knowledge of structural design and integrity, and can make quick or educated decisions whether their home is safe or not in the event of an earthquake. Common sense and good practice is to first-and-foremost get out of the structure immediately and then determine whether or not it is safe to go back in!” 2:47:50 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Head for them thar hills LH. Don't forget the Corona's. :o)” 2:49:51 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “In most cases, outdoors is safer than indoors! There are always the exceptions...as few and far inbetween that they are!” 2:51:53 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Some of the television is showing significant damage. Fallen brick walls, what appears to be a large warehouse has fire coming through the roof now. Be careful Lipstick,if you can find a safe haven or get to a clear spot easily, one that won't allow for overhead objects to fall, do it. I hope you don't get any aftershocks or that this isn't a prelude to something larger.” 2:53:12 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Now that might be worth worrying about. Don?t camp out unless you are in an open area away from buildings and overhead wires, poles, trees, etc. Find a shelter. Your building department should be inspecting building as we type. It may take some time for them to get to yours though. Sorry I can not inspect online.” 2:55:23 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Good little quake!!! I would be watching the MOUNTAIN and for aftershocks and take your quake emergency supplies (that you should have) and pets and live the structure.” 2:58:49 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Buddar, Panic is not useful in any circumstance. This is a time for calm deliberate decision not running into the streets screaming. Her phone and electricity still work and the building is still in one piece.” 3:03:25 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Pretty freaky up here! This is just what this area needed to get people to prepare for a possible "Big One". Lucky for me, my pack is always packed and ready.” 3:09:18 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Who said anything about panic?” 3:19:25 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “They just upgraded it to a 7.0!” 3:22:40 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Wow, 7.0 that's quite a quake. The biggest one I've been through here is CA is 7.1. The best thing to do now is just have your pack ready with the things that you might need for a few days in case you have to leave your home. On Sunday, we had a 4.5 quake here.” 3:27:24 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Another Loma Prieta veteran here, so I know what 7.1 feels like...glad you're okay, LH! According to the P-I, they're not expecting any strong aftershocks. BaSO4, I felt Sunday's quake (in San Francisco), but Jody and Max didn't, so I wasn't too sure...until I saw the first teaser for the 10 o'clock news. Then I guessed it was 4.3, but it turned out to be 4.4. BTW, for California residents, here's an interesting page on recent earthquakes.” 3:41:39 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Yeah Budder! What would a damn geologist know about earth movements anyhow! Oh, wait a second, maybe you DO know what yer talking about? 8P” 3:47:50 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Hope all is OK up there LH that would scare me to death!!!! Whenever I'm in Ca. I worry.I didnt know you had them up there” 3:57:20 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Just talked to my brother in Olympia (one-half mile from the epicenter). Whole lotta' shakin' goin on up there! I would wonder about Rainier--I just got back from St Helens in May and the USGS guys said that, when the Mountain goes, it's gonna' make St Helen's look like a burp. . . . All highways around southern Puget Sound are closed. State offices evac'd. I'm sure the nightly news (freak show) should have some good pics. Phones are still down. Expecting a sunami (i wasn't about to try to spell that word) all along the west coast and alaska. www.drudgereport.com has the best developing news. www.foxnews.com does too. if in doubt, get the hell out of dodge (or washington, depending on your locale). ~Toaster” 4:45:50 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “I'm baaack! I went out, and took my bird with me. I met a neighbor while outside (she had her pet with her), and she informed me that there weren't going to be big aftershocks. Yep, it was upgraded to a 7.0 Damage so far, a small brick bldg and a piling came down. There is a lot of debris on the streets, falling glass and concrete. Many people have been crushed by falling debris. A home went into the water. There are mudslides, some of them on highways that were then closed. News is still coming in. Personal damage to me, none. My apt. shook violently; somethings hit the floor, but nothing broken. When I came home, and used the remote to turn on the tv, nothing was happening. I finally figured out that the cable box fell behind my tv. cb, yeah, it did give me a scare. I just hoped it stopped quickly, but you know how scary moments feel like they are going on forever, lol. Thank you everyone for your well wishes. I hope my fellow tters in WA are okay. Switchback, I hope you are okay along with kleetn, javaboy, strider, cork, SARboy, trailartist, and anyone else I may have left out.” 4:48:29 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “They just downgraded to 6.8... since its 30 miles in the earth they don't expect any aftershocks but I would be cautious just in case.” 5:11:51 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Hope everybody is OK! "Common sense and good practice is to first-and-foremost get out of the structure immediately and then determine whether or not it is safe to go back in!" Common sense is often wrong. Most people who get hurt in earthquakes get hurt by falling debris outside. Unless you live in a concrete slab house in Armenia, you're safer inside than outside. Check around, yes, make sure the gas line is secure, that the windows and doors and intact, and so on. If there's structual damage, leave. If not, the only reason to go outside is to commiserate with panicky neighbors. Going outside in case of aftershocks doesn't make any sense to me either. An aftershock is as likely to be two days later as two hours later. How long are you going to stand outside and wait? Until you feel better? Ah, ha, there's your answer, it's about feeling safe, not being safe. If the building is undamaged, go back inside. I'm a veteran of the Loma Prieta and Northridge quakes. For Loma Prieta I was at a lecture in the Stanford Library. Books were falling everywhere and there was structural damage, so when the quake was over we got out. For Northridge first my cat woke me up ten minutes before the quake, something she'd never do ordinarily. (Animals are very perceptive.) I pushed her away. Then the quake woke me up so I stood in the doorway until it ended. Then I checked the house, no damage, though the electricity went out, so I went back to bed. What woke me up next was freaked out relatives from back east calling to see if I was dead. I'd rather live in earthquake country than hurricane country or tornado country.” 5:59:21 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Me too, Loma Prieta. We were just watching the news from Washington, looks so familiar. I haven't heard anything like the horror of the Cypress Structure in Oakland, I hope the reports continue so well.” 6:00:00 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “I live in Overland Park, KS==tornado alley. I think I'd rather see 'em comin'!! Oh No-auntie em! and your little dog, too!” 6:09:38 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “explorer, what a choice, hurricane, tornado or earthquake, lol. When I left the bldg. I checked for structural damage. Everything seems okay. I understand what you are saying about, feeling you are safe, and actually being safe, lol. toast, since everything turned out okay for me, I'll stick with the earthquakes, lol. I saw a story on tv awhile ago, about how you should all have an underground bunker in tornado states.” 6:23:18 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “i moved into tornado country a few years ago. i sure do miss those hurricanes.” 7:02:29 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “I used to live in Memphis, TN.. possible threats include tornadoes, tropical storms, earthquakes, electrical storms. I am happy in Oregon.. only have to worry about earthquakes, volcanoes, wind storms, and snow storms.” 7:07:25 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “was anybody up this way supposed to be on the trail today? that would make for a memorable hike, huh?!” 7:16:57 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Too bad those jerks and freaks screwing up Mardi Grass didn't get hit by bricks by the earth quake in the middle of their crap. Like God saying "Chill the @$%^ out you idiots!"” 7:17:48 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “I thought we were having tremors here in S. Atlanta - but is was just Rad "shocking the monkey" 40 miles away! LOL! Y'all be careful out there, LH! I'm no expert, but I'd feel mighty skiddish on a fourth floor.” 7:28:17 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! 8:31:10 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “SGT ROck, I wonder how many shop owners are going to say that their wreckage is from the earthquake or Mardi Gras. I guess they will pick which one will get them their money quicker. gojo, I am happy to be on the 4th with no one above me. I'm glad I wasn't in one of those houses here that are built overhanging a bluff, and there are many of them. First thing I did was to put my parrot in his cage for saftey.” 8:36:07 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “LH, VERY glad to know you're okay!! I sincerely hope that everyone else within range of the quake is okay too!!! We've(Army) been put on 24/7 (2hr warning) notice to move for the damage the quake caused in Vancouver & Victoria B.C. Stay safe you guys!!! :-)” 8:44:36 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “bzzt! YOWZER!!!” 9:42:54 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “You guy's will never believe what flashed on my TV it said and I Quote "FINALLY" "EARTHQUAKE" Can you believe it? What idiot wrote that LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” 9:53:12 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Congratulations on riding out a big quake in style! You're not alone. I live on the edge of an ancient volcanic caldera (Long Valley - Mammoth Lakes). Over the last 20 years we've had several magnitude 6. plus quakes with a 7.2 in 1980. The last good sized quake in our area, 5.0 was on a previously quiet fault, Hilton Creek. The Hilton Creek fault is less than 50 yards from our house. It kinda' makes the house jump around when it shakes. Go for the wide open spaces!” 9:59:48 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! 10:10:37 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “I should prolly start poofreading!” 10:19:36 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “dood, i am one groovy eazt koaster!” 10:20:55 PM 2/28/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Thanks mel. My immediate reaction was, "where will I be moving next", but I was pretty calm next to all the people I saw on the news. My quake eventually turned out to be a 6.8. On tv, they were saying a 7.1 would have been much worse. I don't know how you made it through a 7.2 without wanting to move.” 12:32:59 AM 3/01/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Q: Why did an earthquake hit Seattle? A: It's the new center of Rock 'n Roll!!! Q: What happened today when the couple in Seattle had sex for the first time? A: The earth moved!!!” 1:12:07 AM 3/01/01 RE: EMERGENCY: Earthquake Now!!! “Mr. Hiker...those remarks are irresponsible! lol” 9:38:37 AM 3/01/01
