REDMOND (BNN-2/28/01)--World leaders reacted with stunned silence as
Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) conducted an underground nuclear test at a
secret facility in Washington state. The device, exploded at
10:55 am PDT (1:55 pm EDT), was timed to coincide with
talks between Microsoft and the US Department of Justice over
possible antitrust action.

?Microsoft is going to defend its right to market its products by
any and all necessary means,? said Microsoft CEO Bill Gates. ?Not
that I?m anti-government? he continued, ?but there would be few tears
shed in the computer industry if Washington were engulfed in a bath
of nuclear fire.?

Scientists pegged the explosion at around 100 kilotons. ?I nearly
dropped my latte when I saw the seismometer? explained University of
Washington geophysicist Dr. Whoops Blammover, ?At first I thought it
was Mt. Rainier, and I was thinking, damn, there goes the mountain

In Washington, President Bush announced the US Government would
boycott all Microsoft products indefinitely. Minutes later, the
President reversed his decision. ?We?ve tried sanctions since
lunchtime, and they don?t work,? said the President. Instead, the
administration will initiate a policy of ?constructive engagement?
with Microsoft.

Microsoft?s Chief Technology Officer Nathan Myrhvold said the test
justified Microsoft?s recent acquisition of the Hanford Nuclear
Reservation from the US Government. Not only did Microsoft acquire
?kilograms of weapons grade plutonium? in the deal, said Myrhvold,
?but we?ve finally found a place to dump those millions of unsold
copies of Microsoft Bob.?

Myrhvold warned users not to replace Microsoft NT products with rival
operating systems. ?I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a
radioisotope thermoelectric generator inside of every Pentium III
microprocessor,? said Myrhvold, ?but anyone who installs an OS
written by a bunch of long-hairs on the Internet is going to get what
they deserve.?

The existence of an RTG in each Pentium III microprocessor would
explain why the microprocessors, made by the Intel Corporation, run

More bad news. A young man was killed at Mardi Gras in WA. He was trying to help a girl that was being hit and was on the ground. Groups of black males were caught on film bashing white girls faces into glass on parked cars. They also were shown to all walk by this one white girl and take pot shots with closed fists to her face.”

Why did these black young men pick out these little skinny white young women to violently and yes, savagely beat her?

This one girl had to have had broken bones in her face with open gashes. She may not even look the same after this beating. All the pain, all the stitches, all the blood, and what did she do to desearve this? She was white.”

The small snipits of video you saw can be very misleading and suggestive. The media are masters at creating the image of things that aren't really there. “Ken, chill. First of all, don't lump me in with LH. I was just trying to throw a couple of interesting and thought-provoking facts into the debate. I was not taking LH's side (sorry). Maybe I should have stated my position more clearly, but I get accused of over-writing. My position on hate crime laws is that they are ridiculous and unnecessary. It is preposterous and wrong (usually) for the law to take into account what was in a person's heart when he committed a crime. The gang who beat that girl are guilty of aggravated assault or attempted murder or whatever they may be guilty of. What difference does it make if they beat her because she was white or for some other reason. I've been attacking George Bush on some other threads today, but one of his best moments in the debates was when Al Gore tried to take him to task for a lack of hate crime legislation in Texas and brought up a particular case and Bush said basically that we sent they guy to death row you want me to execute him twice? Exactly right. Murder is murder, and race don't enter into it.

I bought up the guy in the car to point out to LH that violence was also being committed by whites. Even if the guy felt justified for running down the people who were immediately surrounding his car, he then proceeded to run down completely innocent, uninvolved and oblivious people in a crosswalk down the street. I don't know the extent of those people's injuries, but I hope he goes to prison for a long long time.”

Except that it's also a fundamental premise of the criminal code: the difference between first-degree and second-degree homicide, and manslaughter, is what was in the murderer's heart at the time (and immediately before) the commission of the crime. It's not novel for the law to recognize certain motivations as more reprehensible than others.

Some say the result is the same, regardless of the motivation; as far as the immediate victim is concerned, that's certainly true. The thing is, hate crimes are far more damaging to the social fabric than crimes with other motivations. If the guy in Texas had been killed in a convenience store stickup, his family would have been just as bereaved; but it wouldn't have had the same lasting damage to race relations in the area.

As for Attias, what he did was heinous--but from everything I've heard he really is mentally ill. I have been impressed by his parents' statements, which acknowledge the tremendous grief he caused and make no effort to take the blame off of him.”

That's not exactly right. The difference between murder and manslaughter, and the different degrees thereof, has to do with intent, not motivation. There's no question that those guys intended to hit her, so their motivation shouldn't really matter. By the same token, if she had died and they intended to kill her, it would be murder, but if she had died and they had not intended to kill her it would be first degree manslaughter (the foreseeable consequence of their actions, or something like that; I'm not a lawyer).

I agree with you on Attias (and the parents), but I was talking about the guy in Seattle who panicked because some "rioters" (word in quote for lack of a less inflamatory term) were surrounding his car and ran a bunch of them down.”
