From now until the 24th of March. The Frederick Meijer garden in Grand Rapids Michigan is having a HUGE butterfly "show". It takes place in a 5 story Atrium. Check www.meijergarden.com you may have to add an "S" at the end of garden. The butterflies are born on site and are native to S American rain forests.Should be cool.

RE: butterflies
hyper, how close to Grand Rapids do you live in Michigan? I grew up around Kalamazoo and went to high school in Big Rapids. I'll be coming through that area in about 10 days to see my folks and sibling. I'm hoping most of the snow is gone from the woods in Southern Mich. by then.

Milwaukee's museum downtown has added a butterfly facility, too, I believe.

Pekka Joy and I live just west of Detroit 3 miles or so, Livonia. I got family in Portage, teachers in Kazoo. Where and when will you be round?

RE: butterflies
I went to a butterfly garden on Vancouver Island. There were supposed to be hundreds (300+) butterflies there, but I don't think there were anywhere near that many.

I think our Pacific Science Center (WA) has a butterfly garden, but I have not been there yet.

RE: butterflies
I hear they are just moths painted up to look like butterflies.

RE: butterflies
hyper, I'll be down sometime between 3/10 and 3/17. My folks live in Portage (out by West Lake) and my brother lives just across the line in Schoolcraft. I have a sister-in-law in Centerline. I'm just hoping to get some spring walking in over break, since I'm not in shape enough for a full-fledged backpack trip at the moment.

RE: butterflies
I taught a 6-week summer-semester "environmental concern" class with inner-city kids a few years ago. One of the field trips was to a zoo, which had a rainforest butterfly exhibit. Simple fascinating! You gotta go Hyper.

...butterflies are free to fly...fly away...fly away, bye bye!

RE: butterflies
In the Houston science and history museum there is a beautiful, multi-story greenhouse that contains thousands of butterflies. If you're wearing perfume or cologne, they'll land right on you.

Betty butterfly sandwiches recipe

5 Rhodes Texas tolls, thawed but still cold

1 egg beaten (but be nice to Mr. Egg)

Filling: bologna, cheese, lettice and mayonnaise

Cut 1 roll in half. Shape 1 piece into a short 5-inch rope for the body. Place on a baking sheet sprayed with non-stick ocoking spray. Save remaining half. For large back wings, shape 2 rolls into 2 large teardrop shapes. Place beside lower half of body. Cut 1 roll in half and form 2 smaller teardrops for front wings. Place beside upper body. With remaining 1 1/2 roll, form 2 flat tear drop shapes, 2 flat circles, 2 flat triangles, 1 thin small rope and 2 small balls. Arrange shapes on wings. Bend rope into a "V" and place above head. Press balls into head for eyes. Brush with egg and let rise 15-30 minutes. Bake at 350 15-20 minutes. Let cool and slice horizontally. Fill with bologna, cheese, lettuce and mayonnaise.

RE: butterflies
Complicated at times is our world, full of who, when, where and whys
and I wonder how much better would it be, if we lived as butterflies
and never owning anything, but having the stuff we need
a time for love, a time to die and a time for us to feed
and we`d bring more color to the world and add to nature`s show
and we`d be a part of things and in part we`d help things to grow
and we wouldn`t worry about who owns it, but enjoy the things that be
but that will never happen in our time, because only butterflies are free

RE: butterflies
The garden was INCREDIBLE!!! We spent 2 hrs just taking in the smells and sites. We saw so many beautiful flutterbies, hopefully the pics turn out. We even saw baby guinea hens ,about as big as a quarter. We will definetley return this summer when the outside gardens are in bloom.

I went to a Butterfly House today to try out my new camera. They have over 600 butterflies and a few turtles. Needless to say I took a few pictures
