(The one time I was down there 4 years after the earthquake, the mall looked like a completely different town.) I told them we just had to ride the "Big Dipper" (I think that's the name).

Sure, there are still hippies in Santa Cruz. I work with one, he's about 60 with a grey pony tail and drives a VW Van (albeit it's a new one).

In Santa Cruz there a wide variety of groups: hippies, homeless, surfers/skaters, students, yuppies, illegal aliens and lesbians. In fact, Santa Cruz is the lesbian capital of the United States. There is also greta fishing off of the rocks and some good backpacking shops.”

There were plenty of hippies at UCSC, but I wasn't one of them. I was dressing in suits, drinking martinis, and listening to lounge music and punk.”

“BaSO4, I always kept my suit on, so I didn't go to Red, White, & Blue much. ;-) But assuming you're not being facetious, there is a great string of secluded little pocket beaches up the coast from SC. Check out the California Coastal Access Guide, which lists them all.”

About, jeez, 10 years ago, some buds and I decided we needed to learn how to surf. So we headed down to Santa Cruz, popped into a local shop, and rented boards and wetsuits. The guy in the shop gave us a few pointers and told us where to go and, poof, we were on our own. So we headed out, as instructed, to the waves north (??) of the pier, and paddled out.

The surfers were real nice to us, but had us spotted as surf-virgins from the first minute. Called us "cherry" or "first-timer" and such and had a few laughs at our expense (but friendly-like). We couldn't figure out how it was that even before our first ride they made us for obvious newcomers.

We realized the problem later. Like a bunch of clowns, we all had our wetsuits zipped up the front. Like wearing a "dork" sign visible from a mile away.

Had a great time anyway and we all managed to get up to standing for at least one ride.”

“Here's a link to Santa Cruz's Compassion Flower Inn, described as "the nation's first Bud, Bed & Breakfast." It was opened for people with a medical need to smoke marijuana, which is legal in Santa Cruz. There are pot leaves stenciled on the wallpaper, a Hemp Room, and a Passion Flower Room (presumably for honeymooners).
