Napster alternatives
Napster is about to be shut down, and have heard several alternative sites mentioned. Anyone have experience with any of these, or know another good Napster clone? What I really like about Napster's site is how easy it is to use.

RE: Napster alternatives
Napster is still on tonight, but earlier today the court ordered them to remove all copyrighted materials within 72 hours of notice. So, DOWNLOAD LIKE HELL for the next day or two.

RE: Napster alternatives
If you already have songs downloaded to the Library, Can you still play them even after it's shut down?
If not, How do you put them on the hard drive?

RE: Napster alternatives
Apparently, Napster's shutdown will not affect your ability to play songs you've already downloaded, with the Napster software already downloaded onto your computer. I just disconnected from the internet and had no problem playing songs I've already downloaded.

Nope, but since you're in the mood to deny other working folks a buck, hey I figured you'd be into a bit of free labor. ;)

RE: Napster alternatives
Music goes out over the radio for free every day and can be taped. Musicians don't bitch about that. The only difference with Napster is you don't have some moron dj talking through the intro.

RE: Napster alternatives
The genie is out the bottle. They may shut down Napster but there'll soon be 100 clones in its place. The internet has changed everything.

RE: Napster alternatives
Radio stations pay royalties to play those songs. Musicians collect on those royalties. Hence, the get paid.

Taping for personal use is fine, but you are not allowed to make copies of the tape and distribute them. Same deal with Napster, it's the illegal sharing of copyright material. Although they don't really "do" anything and it's really the people trading the files who are in the wrong, Napster knowingly facilitates this illegal activity.

In the end, it's like taking money from someone.

RE: Napster alternatives
Well by the same token doesn't the internet facilitate Napster? Should we shut it down next? And should we hold algore accountable, seeing he created the internet and all.

Before ya get your panties all in a wad, I do wanna say that All the songs I've downloaded are tunes of bands no longer together or it's stuff that's hard to find or tunes from bands with only one good song per album. There's not any NEW music out there these days that's worth a crap.

RE: Napster alternatives
Shrek, in the same way that automobiles facilitate drunk driving fatalities. It's the drivers responsibility to not get behind the wheel yet bartenders can be held leagally responsible for feeding too much booze to a potentail drunk driver. I don't think we are anywhere near banning cars.

All music is a form of income to someone no matter if the group is together or not. It's more then just the musicians that get a cut. Sure, record company executives share in the profits but how about the engineers, roadies and all the other working stiffs that are needed to make the music happen.

Anyway, enough of this. It's all in what you consider right and can live with I suppose.

RE: Napster alternatives
Once a file is downloaded, it's yours, baby. You needn't be connected to the Internet to play it, as Steve points out. Further, you don't even need Napster software to play your aquisitions. Winamp is an excellant freeware all purpose audio file player that will handle your mp3's as well as your audio cd's.

RE: Napster alternatives
The way I see it, I've spent a pretty big chunk of change in the past on Albums, Tapes, CD's, Live concerts, etc. I don't feel guilty about snagging a few hard to find tunes from the net. Hell, I feel the record Company owes it to me for years of support. I'm not pulling complete albums off the net or nothin. I only got a 4 gig hard drive on this puter anyway.

I FRIGGIN HATE NAPSTER!!!, THEY'RE FRIGGIN PRICKS!!!

i signed up back in january but cancelled the very same day because my mp3 player wasn't compatible...they drafted by account so i tried to cancel again and left it at that...i just found out they've been drafting my account ever since...i tried to get my money back, advising them that if you look at my account you'll see it's never been used...they only refunded the last draft and said "it's not our fault you didn't use it"...i'm really friggin peeved...they took my money and didn't give me anything in return

sorry, just needed to vent

No, it's not their fault you didn't use it.

BUT it IS their fault that they didn't cancel the service when you asked them too. It's not your fault that their service doesn't work.

I'd call them back and drill them on the fact that they took your money long after you asked them to stop. Normally that's called stealing.

that's exactly what i told them, i was on the phone for 30 minutes...they said the don't have a record of me trying to cancel it...how convenient...the kick in the balls?, they said they'd refund the last month "as a courtesy to me"

Was this on a credit card or linked bank account?

Either way I'd call the bank and tell them that they were unauthorized charges.

If any of you are interested, www.gomusic.ru is a great source for music downloads. It is a Russian site and only charges $.19 per song and they are mp3s not mp4s, so you can copy and burn and share to your heart's content. They have a good variety with alot of the classics. I have been using the site for about 6 months with no problems at all. You can set up an account and bank a chunk of money and just click and download until you run out.
