RE: Rain Gear
OK, I'm trying valiantly to stay on topic. The Campmor suit (parka and pants) is very durable and you can climb in it. i've used it a lot in the Beartooths on sharp rocky trails and boulder hopping. Don't worry about trashing it - just buy another one. Breathability dosen't seem to be an issue at high elevations were it's raining, windy and 35 degrees. It's got a few vents, but I'm mostly trying to stay warm!
BTW my first thought for the reason you included a condom in your first aid kit was to put it over your gun barrel like the SEALS do.

What do a good-looking redhead and a tornado have in common?

They both can mess up a good trailer court!

You know, I'm TRYING to pay attention here. Obviously some of you are thinking of "walking in the rain" as foreplay. Me, I like to be home when it rains. Back to the thread topic. A poncho, wicking but warm layers for cooler rain, wind jacket and wind pants, gaiters. Am I missing something? Oh yeah, marbles.

TNF Mountainlight Jacket and Campmor waterproof/breathable rain pants...but only in the Winter.

Summertime, go NEKKID! Then, when you get to camp, put on some nice dry clothes (optional).
That's what I do. ;o)

RE: Rain Gear
NA--I have a Lowe Triple-Point rain parka that has worked fine in a steady, moderate rain while hiking. Good pit zips and other venting. It is a model specifically for BPing -- no lower pockets to get in the way of a hipbelt. Got a good deal so I abide the "mango" color.

In the old days, I used a poncho with a fold-up extension so it could be made long enough to cover a backpack if needed. While not very suitable for off trail hiking, I can't recall any serious problems on rainy trips to places such as Isle Royale. Venting was never a problem, LOL.

RE: Rain Gear
Don't have a Lowe pack! But I dig the Triple Point pants...7.3oz, rolls up next to nothing, haven't had any wet-out yet (unlike old GorTex), fits me like a glove, and I've beat the tar out of 'em on a few trips and they're still kickin'.

RE: Rain Gear
NA, the parka has pockets, just not where they will be cinched down by a waistbelt and have the material, etc., bind on your waist and be inaccessible without undoing the belt. Seems pretty smart to me. And my Lowe Walkabout has 3 pockets.

RE: Rain Gear
I use L.L. Bean's Torrent parka and pants. They are $99 and $89, and are supposed to be waterproof/breathable (non-Goretex membrane). I haven't used them on the trail (hasn't rained on me yet), but I used the parka for kayaking. It kept the seawater out well, and I didn't feel any sweatier than I usually do.

On the down side, there are no pit-zips - just venting chest pockets. The women's version only comes in bug attracting colors. Also, they are not the lightest or most compactible thing you can get. I think they are a good value, but I might want something more for Seattle.

The TNF Mountainlight jacket has served me well.Check Campmor supersavers and not get raked over the coals too bad.I like the green and black color scheme but have had problems with the hood sort of coming down over my eyes. This makes a baseball type cap nessesary.Overall the Mountainlight and G-tex pants are a great combination IMHO.

RE: Rain Gear
RichB, I'm in the same boat. I got a little check for some extra work I did at school and quick spent it on a Precip jacket before I frittered it away. I put it in my daypack because it takes up little room and is so light, but no rain when I've been out with it.

However, my Triple-Point parka has gotten in some time the last couple days during the storms that have hit here. I keep it hanging by the back door.

I have a SD light-weight anorak windbreaker that is at least 15 years old and despite a lot of wear time summers and winters, is in great shape. It held up through our China trip, always cleans up nicely. I just have "outgrown" it. Nicely made. Wife and I have SD packable wind/rain suits; they are nice, but not waterproof -- only resistent, good for drizzle or brief light showers. Easy to put in a day pack, though, and nicely made.
