Name your hiking style!View MessagesRE: Name your hiking style! “GORP = Good 'Ol Raisins and Peanuts” 12:28:15 PM 3/12/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “I like to walk. I'll walk all day. Not fast or hurried. I take every side trail and stop all the time. I go way less than 2 mph but "walk" for 10-12hrs or more, so most days are still 12-20 miles.” 12:39:16 PM 3/12/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Hummus is good because you can get dried powdered hummus at the supermarket and reconstitute on the trail (and it tastes good)... same goes for refried beans and some other bean mixes.” 12:42:24 PM 3/12/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Kingdom: Animaleus Phylum: Mammary Admirerious Class: Titus Gluteus Suitorous Order: Primate(silverback) Family: Firebuilders Genus: Kmartous specialous Species: NORML sapien sapien.” 12:58:20 PM 3/12/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “you can get polenta dry and in bult too. Spaghetti sauce is how I tried it. Kashi you can boil water, put the kashi in with raisins dried fruit and/or nuts and leave to soak over night.” 6:24:24 PM 3/12/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “mmmmmm mac-n-cheese” 11:49:21 PM 3/12/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Singles persons food: mac n' cheese, frankfuters, canned tuna and canned corn, hmmmmm.” 12:15:21 AM 3/13/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Canis yelleranus” 7:48:19 AM 3/13/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Ahh a food thread. I was shopping the other day and I saw a package of 'Soup Starter'. It is just dehydrated veggies with some seasoning. This looks pretty simple and nutritious. Anyone ever eaten this stuff?” 7:58:29 AM 3/13/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Yes bacpac, I get an organic version (dried soup veggies)at the health food store. With some protein(beef/chicken/tuna/turkey) and some starch (cous-cous/rice/potatos) and whatever spices you like you can make EASY and filling and healthy meals.” 8:03:53 AM 3/13/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “I mostly like to walk when I am walkin in the woods. Sometimes I like to stop for a minit and smell for rock rats or possums or ratcoons or leaf rats or pointy tale grouches or tree rats or bares or brids. Sometimes I like to stop and take off my pakpak and lay down and close my eylips. Sometimes I like to stop and eat a snak. Sometimes I like to stop and dreenk. But mostly I like to walk. I try to walk eleventy hunnerd times everday.” 8:15:18 AM 3/13/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “I like to savor my surroundings while hiking and mentally take notes that I'll later put in my journal. Just haven't gotten into the habit of writing during my hike. I have a knack for rembering details that sometimes drives my family nuts but it comes in handy years later when we're discussing past trips. Bushwacking is our family tradition - sometimes you just have to get off the official trail and have some fun (as long as you're not harming the environment). Generally my hiking is like my running...slow but persistent...I get where I need to be when I need to be there.” 1:58:09 PM 3/13/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “My sister and I are a pair-a-pathetic-peripatetics (with thanks to Calvin & Hobbs for the term).” 7:50:41 PM 3/13/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “I take my. Sence I've been studying geology I have gained a lot of interest in formations along the trail. Also I enjoy smells. Of course there are times that I'm just hustlin for my camp.” 1:18:04 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Slow and easy. Stop frequently to smell the roses. I drive Honey nuts.” 1:54:21 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “i love those cheerios.” 1:57:18 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “with tuna?” 2:06:30 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Slow walkin', light packin', stop for fishin', stop for wishin', loafin', sketchin', and sun ray catchin' kinda guy.” 5:31:38 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “I like going ultralight. A little mosquito netting, fleece sleeping bag and food that needs no cooking. I really enjoy the occassional bushwacking experience. Someone who I've packed with before likes taking everything. Just because you're pack is 3200 cu. cm. doesn't mean you have to fill every little nook. To each their own.” 5:51:40 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Loafpacker here. I do hit my goals but this bud takes his sweet time to loaf around all the realy cool spots.” 8:16:33 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “fast, I like to speed hike, then stop at nice views for only a few minutes, then get back on the go. I would rather speed hike and have time to goof around at camp them waste time on the trail.” 8:30:20 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Common Ice, what is the difference. I like to stop at the creeks and play, soak in the sites, enjoy the sun in the fields, etc. Camp is where I hang my hammock until I start going the next day. Give it a try, enjoy the stops more one hike, then spend just the minimum in the camp. I remember more of what I saw while hiking, not my camp sites. After all, it's hiking, not camping.” 8:35:51 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “exactly.” 8:39:12 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Yahoo! We've got another "show me" stater on this board. Glad to know I'm not alone. Now, have you seen the site by some guy named Danny - it's filled with MO trails. I'll provide the link if you want it. Glad to hear from you liamoconnor!” 8:45:31 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Mr.Utahiker, how bout providin' the Mo trails for everyone. My thesis area was near Potosi in SE MO. Someday I hope to go back and see the old sites and do some hiking. I stayed in my tent along the Big River stream on 21 at a free (for a week I think) campsite provided by the state fish-n-game commission for fisherman. Beautiful state!” 8:59:32 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Buddur, ute here..pardon my faux paux in not sharing this link with all on the board. You are right, MO is a beautiful state, 'specially the ozarks. You camped in a great site not far from St. Louis. Hope you come back someday and enjoy many other trails! Danny's MO Hiking Trails” 9:44:22 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “I also know of an Idaho hiking page with trip reports and that page has a link to a guy named Rob Jones. He has great trip reports, especially on Utah. Anyone interested?” 9:47:27 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Tea, That's what I do, but I just add miles until the day is done. I'll hike just as long as a normal person, but go farther distances. I do make exceptions, like in the canyon when it was 120 degrees in the shade. Then I stop and play in the creek.” 10:55:34 PM 3/14/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “i like to mosey in. wilderness areas where you can be wherever you want whenever you want. at least 4 to 5 days.. breathe not talk while hiking so i can hear the wind and birds and water......but i say mmmm a lot......but if not solo....love that camp/break talk I can mosey for hours and miles until I sense "this is the spot" to settle for the night. then i start noticin the trees.. prefer sleeping suspended...with a view of the night sky and waking facing east. name it? Backpacker,, hammocus, florafauna/aquaphile, walkinyoginimeditator subspecies old laughing weird monkey” 1:15:13 AM 3/15/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “Buddur, ya haven't looked at the tt contributor page photos lately, have ya! Just sign me MR. Utahiker....” 9:01:04 AM 3/15/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “i was going to correct miss buddur, when i saw that, but i forgot.” 9:05:26 AM 3/15/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “My humble apologies, Ms.Utahiker! As for you Miss.Radagast....” 9:27:09 AM 3/15/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “btw - What's a dog gotta do to get his mug on the pic page?” 9:28:46 AM 3/15/01 RE: Name your hiking style! 9:32:03 AM 3/15/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “utahiker - I used to live in Columbia, MO. Awesome hiking spots around there. Beautiful bluffs and cliffs, and incredible cave systems.” 4:25:36 PM 3/15/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “m-nutz, thanks for the input! Both my kids went to college at Mizzou and we did some day hikes around the area. I see you live in Illinois. I have some trail info deep in my files on IL hiking trails but can't think of any right now. Any suggestions on trails not to miss in your state?” 4:38:39 PM 3/15/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “utahiker - Absolutely. Where I live is near Rt. 13 between Carbondale and Marion. The northern boundary of Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge is just across the road from me. Further south, through the refuge, lies the 300,000 acre Shawnee National Forest. East, west, or south, anywhere from 5 min. to 2 hours gets me to great hiking. Rt. 13 is basically where the glaciers stopped. Thus north of here is flat, and south is very rocky, hilly, and forested. Some great spots to check out are: http://www.murphysboro.com/littlegrandcanyon/Highlights.html">Little Grand Canyon For some reason I'm having a hard time finding the specific links I am looking for. So I will just list some spots and I can provide you with directions to them, if you want. -Garden of the Gods -Giant City State Park -Panther's Den -Lusk Creek Wilderness Area -Burden Falls Wilderness Area -Bay Creek Wilderness Area -Stone Face -Cedar Bluff -Millstone Bluff -The River to River Trail (160 miles) -Ferne Clyffe State Park -Trail of Tears State Forest -Larue Pine Hills -Oakwood Bottoms -Heron Pond -Wildcat Bluff -Bell Smith Springs -Rocky Bluff Trail -Devils Kitchen Lake -Cedar Lake That ought to get you started. Let me know if you would like detailed info about any of these spots. Happy Hiking!” 5:52:53 PM 3/15/01 RE: Name your hiking style! “null” 6:32:00 PM 11/21/01
