JMT Resupply
I am worried about being able to carry enough food in a bear can between Whitney Portal and Vermilion Valley Ranch. Any advice?

My thought is to first hike to Charlotte lake from Onion Valley, leave a hidden bear can, and hike back out to OV. Then start the trip at Whitney Portal. This gives me my first resupply on day 4, and gives me two extra days to acclimatize before climbing Whitney. Is this more effort than it's worth? Help.

RE: JMT Resupply
Have you thought of mailing yourself a
resupply to Muir Trail Ranch? It's about 25 miles closer than Vermilion Valley Resort. It costs $45.00 for 25 lbs of resupply... mailed to yourself in a 5 gallon bucket. Muir Trail Ranch is only a 1 mile detour off the JMT.

RE: JMT Resupply
How long are you going to be out? You can get 7-8 days of food in a cannister if you pack carefully. One person here claims they got 13 days worth in (hard to imagine that).

RE: JMT Resupply
When I did the JMT, about 100 years ago, we packed up our food (for 12) and had friends meet at trailheads from the Owens Valley. We did the trail in 28 days, climbing 17 peaks along the way. The first stop was Devils Postpile, the last was Onion Valley, I'd have to look up the middlle one. We got resupplied every 7 days.

RE: JMT Resupply
Hey Idy Bob! I'll be purdy close to there come fall. Knowing very little about the JMT, I'm very curious to know about what kinda mileage ya did that trip. Is 28'ish days about average for a thru of the JMT?? I'd like to thru-hike the JMT if a Mamaw stays with us a month or so in San Fran. Thanx in advance for your wisdom.

RE: JMT Resupply
Charlotte Lake, just in from Onion Valley is a good option for a food stash or food drop between Vermillion and Whitney. I arranged a drop a few years ago with the packers that operate out of Parchers Resort at South Lake. They left my food in the bear box at Charlotte lake. Another possibility is at Rae Lakes, but probably a few $$ more.

RE: JMT Resupply
A drop to Charlotte lake runs about $125 for a packer and his horse and another $65 for the mule carrying your stuff.
