Johnnie Walker Black was an early favorite of mine. Talisker is one of the major components of that blend...not sure if the same holds true for JW Gold and Blue.

I could kick myself now for not touring a distillery in Scotland a few years back. I was there with my gf at the time, and she didn't give a flip about single malts so we mainly went to old castles, Loch Ness, blah, blah, blah! I did come away with a couple of bottles of really hard to find scotches though.

I guess drinking will make a man out of a guy.

Ha, most of what I see is it making people sillier than little children overdue for a nap.

Been there, too much.

Not really Slimmer. Anyone can drink. It takes a man to have temperance.

I thought drinking was reserved for adults, just like adult bookstores.

for the Islay enthusiasts...

The (peat) phenols by parts per million in each Islay whisky are:

Bunnahabhain 2ppm
Bruichladdich 3-4ppm
Bowmore 25ppm
Caol Ila 35ppm
Lagavulin 35ppm
Laphroiag 40ppm
Ardbeg 54ppm

Of course, these are fresh-off-the-still numbers. As a whisky ages the oak barrels will filter out the phenols (while adding in their own flavors - tannins like vanillin), so a 15 y.o. whisky will have less phenols than a 10 y.o.

Most Speyside whiskies (Macallan, Glenlivet, Balvenie, etc.) only have 1-2ppm.

Bruichladdich will be introducing a real peat monster in the next 5-10 years named Octomore. Its off the still phenol number is a whopping 80.5ppm.

OK, so I have about 1/4 of a bottle of Gelnletet left and it'll be history this weekend. I love this stuff. What should I try now? I was thinking of trying some Macallan after reading some raving reviews about it. I like the lightness of the Glenlevet and don't want to go too dark and peaty too fast.

I started with Glenlivet and moved to Macallan. Macallan has less peat taste, so if you're not a fan of peat, go with Macallan. Glenmorangie has a little more peat than Glenlivet does. Laphroaig is as peaty as they come.

When I used to drink Scotch, I loved this stuff...

http://www.beerliquors.com/buy/liquors/knockando.htm

When the local Walgreens in the area decided to phase out their liquor departments, they were offering up to 30% off on all their expensive stuff. They had one bottle of this stuff left so I decided to buy it.

I loved it! I had the 18 year aged stuff.

I wish I could still drink this. The stomach cannot take it anymore.

The peaty taste is the scotch taste, yes? This is one of the things I liked about the Glenlivet was the taste wasn't too over powering like the Chavis Regal was. So Macallan is even milder?

My neighbor has a bottle of 18 year old Dalwinnie(SP?) he says he just can't bring himself to open but has no problem puilling it out every time I'm over just to show me and taunt me. fukker...

Nigal,

You have to break into his house, steal the bottle, empty the whisky into another container, pee in the bottle, and replace it without his knowing.

You have to.

Oh, well then go buy him some corrosive ammo and tell him you know for a fact it's non-corrosive.

He has to pay.

My current preferred scotch whisky is Balvenie and has been for some time.

Unfortunatly, it is not stocked by bars, so I have to settle for lesser brands (or drink beer).

Dalwinnie is pretty good scotch. I also like Glen Morangie. I have not had Knockando, but hear it is pretty good.

Friends do not let friends drink hillbilly hog water! I think the EPA has classified it as a Class I carcinogen.

If you're up for it, pick up a bottle of highland's 12-year-old. It's an enormously good scotch at a fairly reasonable price.

It's also in the middle of the peat/smokiness scale.

All the malts mentionned here are offered at my village pub along with Newcastle, Kilkenny, Smithwick's and Bass on tap.

How does Dewers White Lable compare to the Glenlevits? It's about the only thing I can find in a pint. It looks like a nice light scotch though.

I'm cheap so I like Smugglers Scotch Whiskey. I add about a quarter ounce of water over ice. My favorite. I like it better than Dewars, which is common in restaurants. My work partner buys me "The Balvenie" scotch whiskey single malt from our knowledgeable russian liquor expert.

Laphroig, argh. I wanna wash my mouth out just thinking about it. WAY too peaty for me.

My favorite is Dalwhinnie, though if I'm in the mood for something more flavorful, the pricier Glenrothes is a very close second. Knockando is a harder one to find but very aggreeable.

Well, seeings how the last time I drank scotch I drank 3/4 a bottle of Glenlevit, I'm lucky I can even look at a bottle of scotch.

Laphroaig
Single Malt Scotch Whisky

The 1745 rebellion split Scotland in half, pitting clan against clan. The McCabe brothers, being of McDonald stock, had supported the crown - the wrong half! By around 1810, they had changed their name to Johnston, moved to remote Islay and bought 1000 acres of farmland at Laphroaig for rearing cattle.

Now to raise cattle, you must grow "feed" barley for the long winter months. And what do you do with the surplus barley? Well, ferment beer if you are English - but for an Islay Scotsman there is only one thing: distil whisky!

By 1815 the word had spread around Islay that the whisky being produced at Laphroaig was particularly good - their source of water being very soft, peaty and lacking in minerals. It soon became more profitable to distill whisky than raise cattle - and in that year Laphroaig whisky was "officially" born.

Doc, once you get to the 15 and 30 they mellow out magnificently. The peat is smoothed out. In fact I think I'll have one now.
