I went out and bought some of that Glennlivet stuff. I gave up my next two week allowance in order to purchase it; you guys better be right about it.

It's in the highball and ready to go (damn, the smell almost knocks me over).

Try it on ice first and after a few beers. And sip it. I've seen ya drink Goldslagger (SP?). Scotch isn't that bad.

“The 18 year old Glenlivet is what I call "praying scotch'. You take a drink, bow your head as if praying, look at the glass and say damn that's good scotch.". birch and I once drank the better part of a whole bottle and I think our necks were worn out. LOL!”

I gave it a chance. I just can't hang. One glass (with the ice) and I had to cut right back to Moosehead.

I just saw a show on Absinthe two days ago on History Channel. I've heard all kinds of stories about the stuff. Back in the day, it was supposed to caused ya to see creepy stuff like a mild form of acid. That was from the impurities in the stuff, though.

I've heard the real expensive Czech stuff is rut gut nasty stuff but the French and New Orleans stuff is best. I've heard this is the cream of the crop Absinthe though.

That's what they said on that show. While it meets all of the quality standards for the US, for some reason it can't be imported to the US.

The recipe for the real stuff was just reversed engineered from old notes and processes from a few 100 years ago, per that show.

If I come by it again, I'll let y'all know. It was something like "The History of Booze". It included stuff from the White Lighting days in the south.”

“Last night I tried Laphroaig 10 year old for the first time. For an Islay I can only compare with 18 yr old Lagavulin.

And with that, I found the Laphroaig less intense, and not in a good way. It's nose and flavor were weaker and not nearly as enjoyable. But again, it might be an age thing. I might have to go to a whisky bar where I could compare the two.

“I was given a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask. All the way from the Motherland. It's done in the "traditional way". I give it a big fat thumbs up. I can't do it justice but they can:

Laphroaig Quarter Cask takes its inspiration from the small casks often used for Scotch Whisky in the 19th century and frequently transported across the Glens by packhorse.

As the industry grew, they fell into disuse – bigger and more cost effective barrels became the norm, for maturation and transportation.

However as single malt lovers may know, the relationship between the barrels and the maturing spirit is critical. We noted that the small cask size gives up to 60% greater contact with the wood compared to some of the larger sizes used today, thus greatly intensifying the maturation process.

It was decided to recreate some of the Quarter Casks and the flavours they produce. We transferred some still maturing Laphroaig from our larger style barrels into the Quarter Casks. There then followed a further periods of maturation in our original Dunnage Warehouse No1.

For greater authenticity we simply barrier filtered the whisky – the method used in those far off days – and bottled at a higher alcoholic strength.

"Say goodbye to "vatted malt" whiskies. It is admittedly a small category of Scotch...

... The fracas got its start in 2003 when the giant drinks conglomerate Diageo started to run out of the venerable single malt Cardhu....Diageo tried to fill the orders by fudging what was in the bottle, combining surplus malt whiskies from other distilleries with the waning stocks from Cardhu.

...But what if you take several prime single malts and mix them together, without any of the grain whisky filler? Traditionally such whiskies have been called "vatted malts."

Diageo might have put that term on the label of the reformulated Cardhu. But it chose another traditional phrase for such stuff, "pure malt," which not only seemed to blur the line between a single malt and a blend, but perhaps even suggested that the new Cardhu was better -- more "pure" -- than the old single-malt version...."

So "Vatted Malt" will now be called "Blended Malt Scotch Whisky" which is not be confused with Blended Scotch Whiskey.
